The sparkle of the transporter, sounds and light, that announced a living being appearing on the platform went off and in their wake left a tall man in a red uniform. He hissed though his teeth and seemed to shake himself as if he could literally shake off the transporter beam. His sandy coloured hair was neatly gelled and his trimmed beard looked almost ginger against the whiteness of his skin. Over his eyes he wore a grey coloured visor which he now removed revealing bright red coloured irises. He scanned the room and fixed the NE at the controls with an intimidating stare then slowly stepped down from the platform.

Adjusting the grip on the bag across his shoulders he glanced around as if working out if someone was coming to greet him or if he should just head off on his own.

“Uhh Commander?” The NE asked and flinched as he turned his gaze back onto her.

“Yes Ensign?” He replied, his tone was very gentle. Completely the opposite of what she expected and he could see that as her shoulders unrolled and she relaxed slightly.

“Do you want me to call someone to escort you to your quarters?” She asked.

Lucas walked into the transporter room. “Zen. It’s been a while.” The transporter NE stood agape. The deeply unpleasant British CNS he had brought on two days before seemed to know the frightening new XO. “I’ll take it from here love, thanks.”

The man grinned showing startlingly white teeth. “So this is where you ran off to. What happened to getting the shuttle with me?” He asked and followed the man.

“Emily had to leave earlier to catch start of term. Apparently I work on a 16 year old’s schedule.”

“Ahh. Well that makes sense. Though I would have appreciated more than a note that just said ‘Gone ahead.’ “

As they stepped out the door, he said “I have to make sure you’re not too mental to be First Officer. Still hissing by way of greeting strangers?”

“You know that it’s the transporter beam and then the damn light. It takes a second to get used to the change and it’s not like I purposely go about hissing at people.” He tossed the visor at Lucas and walked along the corridor ignoring the stares from those crew members they passed. He was used to it.

“Right. It’s the transport. My version of the hiss is sardonic remarks. Equally friendly, a little more average.”

Zen rolled his eyes. “I’m a mutant what’s your excuse? Oh yeah your a jerk sorry I forgot.” He said.

“How much trouble have you caused since you got here? Am I going to have to make apologies before I report in?”

“I don’t think I’ve terrorised the entire ship yet. One ensign from science. But some bad news had to be broken.” After a pause, he remembered to say “No one died. But Lt Michaels isn’t going to leave his wife for her.”

“Was it really necessary to tell her?” He asked as they reached a junction and he paused to allow the people coming towards them to pass by.

“That engineer should be on duty right now.” He pointed to one of the two. “You saw that. Fear and then shame crossed her face when she saw senior officers, one of them likely the new XO.”

“Yes I saw that, but like normal people I considered her empathically and looked away. What I didn’t do was turn on a high powered perception then use it against someone I don’t know.” He raised his eyebrows. “I mean if I take a leaf out of your book Lucas I’d go around saying which people smell better than others to eat.”

Resuming their prior conversation, Lucas said “I consider it necessary. She could either find out now or after months of empty promises. That man is a terrible liar. Someone would’ve caught him. At least this way she doesn’t get a citation for fraternisation.”

Zens eyes slid sideways and he gave his head a small shake. “So you are saving her from her terrible relationship choices. It’s very ancient earth Oprah…I mean you’ll need a wig of course…and a microphone, a book club maybe.”
