That made Sara laugh. “How do you word it? When you have to say a whole lot of nothing.” She wondered how Shara held all those secrets, the things that she was certain were there that not even she had the clearance to know.

Shara took a deep breath. “It depends. In this case, what I told Nadine was this: We were assigned on a very important mission that we can’t talk about because it is classified. Yes, there was danger involved, and yes it was really hard at times. But we made it back safely with the knowledge that the Federation is safer because of our actions.” She shrugged. “They will either get it or not, but that’s all you can do.”

“I know I’ll never forget any of it. But I kind of wish the rest of the galaxy could. Or just give up on trying to know.” Sara shrugged. “I guess time is the only real ally there. Something else will take over as the main mystery people wonder about.”

Shara smiled. “There is that. Honestly, sometimes these things follow you around, but eventually most people get bored with the gossip. I, as a former Maquis, can attest to that. But I think if you come at the issue with your family from a place of reassurance and openness about what you can say, most of time people will get it.”

“Thank you. I have to say, reality is starkly underwhelming compared to what I was promised in spy holonovels.” She and Jared ran around playing spy as kids and this particular bit of fate would leave her young self in shock more than anything else.

Shara chuckled. “Oh, trust me, it’s never what people think it’s going to be. I mean, my career was the most stereotypical and I have often projected that same vibe. But if you look at my daughter’s career, aside from a brief exceptional period, her job in Intelligence was mostly data based and R&D. She’s a computer person. Best programmer and hacker I know. Which some people would get antsy about, but she’s done more to protect key projects than people will realize, and the majority of people will never hear about. That is probably more true to life in Intelligence than my covert work ever was, even if both are necessary.”

“We’ve been on some crazy adventures.” Sara took a massive gulp of her drink. “Things are either absolutely insane or we’re just drifting through, scanning and intercepting. The tonal whiplash here… but none of it is anything like the holonovels my brother and I used to play.”
