Sitting in his office, Izei pulled the requested files: Autopsy records for the Federation Security agent as well as the Intel agent. He pulled both files up and read them over, several times, just skimming. Then he began looking them over with a careful eye. He started with the Security agent, looking for cause of death, injury details, forensic findings, anything that might give him the kind of information he wanted - information about their killer.

The FedSec agent was killed by a single blow from a bladed weapon, a knife as the object was found still in the body of the deceased. There was indication of a particular angle to the wound to specify a right or left handed assailant; although the blade itself was designed for throwing. But to bring down a full grown human male with a single throw would be… impressive, to say the least. Unless, as was the case, the blade entered the subject’s back, sliding between vertebrae, and severing the spinal cord completely. Death would have been instantaneous.

The forensics on the body showed nothing that was out of the ordianary except for one thing: the clown makeup the deceased agent wore had two DNA samples in it. His, and one Rudolfo Mangiani. A file search would show that Mangiani was a professional circus performer and clown with many years of experience in that particular entertainment arena.

With a throw like that, either the killer was extremely lucky, or an expert. Aasrel knew if he attemted to throw a knife at somebody, it would be a miracle if it hit the target, let alone a shot that so perfectly severed the spine. He took note of the cause of death, in detail, as well as the name of the circus performer and that the performer’s DNA was found in the makeup the deceased wore at the time of death.

He moved on then to the intelligence agent. He searched the autopsy report for the same pieces of information, except this time, he also looked for similarities between the two.

The autopsy for the Intel agent was disgusting, even by an experienced medical professional’s standards. The Agent had apparently been brutally tortured in some of the most horrific ways imaginable. Missing skin, eyes gone, teeth removed obviously in a quick and very painful fashion, and burns and signs of other numerous traumas filled the report like a laundry list of sentient life rights violations. The cause of death was unfortunately asphyxiation… specifically drowning. After all, the body had been found in a recycler materials storage tank.

One fact seemed to stand out of the plethora of horror, though. The agent’s spine had been broken. The nature of the break indicated they had been bent backwards over a rounded, hard surface; perhaps a pipe or railing. The vertebrae showed signs of micro fracturing and stress breaks… meaning that the bending was done slowly and most like resulted in paralysis.

In the forensics of their belongings was a list of personal effects and what was found on… and in… the body. Clothes, satchel, PaDD (wiped clean of any and all information), earrings, rings, necklace. It was then that something caught the CMO’s attention. The inventory said rings… plural. Specifically two. Looking over the autopsy vids, the body when it was brought in only had one ring on it.

Varen worked his way through sickbay, he hated interrupting people while they worked. He was not even sure how he would be able to assist he was not a medical doctor after all. Oren’s background in Medical research would certainly come in handy as would most of the other hosts life experiences. He rang the bell to the Chief Medical Officers officer and waited. Order’s were orders after all and the case was intriguing enough to make the time spent well worth it.

Subconsciously he scratched his head, the computer had indicated that the Izei was in the office. He pressed the chime again to see if the doctor. “Doctor Izei?” he called through the door.

He pressed the button and let the door open, looking up at the CSO. “Lieutenant… Jorath, right? Were you sent to help with these autopsy reports?” He asked, beckoning Jorath inside.

Varen smiled, “I am He, you may call me Varen if you like, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” He said extending his hand.

He moved closer to where the Izei was sitting. “I was sent here to help in what ever way I can” he said with the pause. “Perhapps with some forenzics ?” he noted. “Mind if I have a look?”

“Have at it… Brace yourself. These reports aren’t pretty.” Aasrel replied, passing him the forensics reports. “Medically, there’s a horror show going on here, but that’s not the important part. Look at the list of the Intel agent’s personal effects. Two rings were with him. Look at the autopsy. One ring on the body.”

“Thanks ” Varen said then dug in to the data at least the death for the FedSec had been swift and there was a DNA trail to follow, the intel agent was another mater. The torture this poor soul endured, no one should ever have to experience.

As he continued through the details of the report ne noted “No DNA or trace evidence on the intel officer suggests a professional or someone very cautious?” he noted.

“I agree. Not only that, but the methods used. No amateur is so meticulous, so efficient in… what it is they were doing.”

“As to the missing ring, chain of evidence should prevent that. He dug through the report to see if there were any pictures of the body on scene before it was moved, or maybe a Holo file? “Taken after the body was moved you think?” he half asked the question.

“I’m not sure. If they were in the person effects, it may have been removed while the body was at the medical examiner’s office.” Aasrel commented with a frown.

Varen nodded his face twisting into a cross between confusion and concern. He made a few entries on the pad and attempted to bring up the chain of evidence. “Well let’s have a look at the evidence chain and see if we can figure out where it went or get a look at it before it went missing ” he stated.

Aasrel pulled up the chain of evidence log and began to scour it. “Let’s see…”

The chain of custody was solid from the time the body was found until it was entered into the morgue. Two rings before, one ring after. The ring itself seemed to be a gold ring with a large green stone, emerald-like, set in the center.

Varen looked at the doctor, “Odd the ring was there when it went to the morgue. And now it’s not in the evidence.” he paused for a moment, “So either it vanished on its own, got left on the body or someone took it.” he noted. He started looking through the logs of who accessed the body once it was logged and the effects had been placed into evidence. “What do you think doctor?”

“If it were on the body there’d have been evidence of it in the ashes, assuming the body was cremated.” Aasrel frowned and checked the report to double check what was done with the bodies after the morgue. “If someone took it, when did they get to it? If we can find that out, we can find out if there’s a way to narrow down who.”

Varen used the computer to enhance the image of the ring from the crime scene. “Lets get the computer chewing on this ring, see if maybe the design has some significance” he said and started the computer looking through starfleet data for the ring or rings like it.

It took a few minutes; which in and of itself indicated that the item was not common or of strong historical significance. The computer then trilled and said =/\= No match found. =/\=

As the two officers debated the significance and origin of the ring, the CMO’s door chimed.

“Come in,” Aasrel said, hearing the door chime. To Varen, “No match on the pattern. Could it be expensive, or a personal talisman of some sort?”

Varen nodded in agreement “Still causes me grate concern that something went missing from the time the body was first found to the time it made it to the evidence bags” he paused as someone entered the room.

Upon receiving permission to enter, Adrian stepped through the doors and nodded to both, then said to Dr. Izei,
“Sickbay is prepared for departure, sir. All checkups completed, inventories stocked and new supplies stowed.”

“Dr. Soral, come in and join us. This is Lt. Varen, our CSO. What do you make of these autopsy reports?” Izei asked indicating the reports on the computer terminal.

~ Izei, CMO

“Thank you, sir. I am reporting in.” He said a bit dryly. “Nothing like being put right to work.” Adrian said as he stepped in and moved in enough so he could see what the other two men were looking.

Varen smiled and gave a small nod “Dr Sorel” he said with a nod as he walked in. “A fresh set of eyes would be welcome” he finished.

Adrian studied the autopsy reports on both men for several moments then said. “Were they killed at the same place and time? If so it looks like the first didn’t have anything they wanted. Quick and clean kill, the second was tortured for information. Which one owned the ring? Perhaps a ring with hidden information or an insignia of some sort. It must have had some significance.”

“Indeed the ring is a key piece of information though how or what it represents at this time is unclear. ” he said looking for information on his screen. ” I’m not sure if they were killed at the same location lets have a look” he said.

Adrian nodded as he waited for the response.

They were not killed at the same place or time. The FedSec agent was murdered at the ambassador’s residence, and the Intel agent was killed after transporting the egg.

((I note in the GM’s description that the Padd was wiped of all data and information but he doesn’t explicitly say there was no DNA or fingerprints. Am I reading that correctly, James?))

Adrian noted the DNA trace from the circus performer. “Who is this circus performer? Computer, who was the circus performer and what information can you give me on him?”

Varen shifted in his seat slightly wondering if the DNA would yield results of any kind. He was hopeful that a lead would come out of their investigation here. He waited patiently for the computer to chime back with results cycling through the notes they currently had.
