Eulailia heard the doors close to her quarters with a soft click that seemed louder in the silence of the room. She moved to the shared workstation, the sleek surface reflecting her troubled expression. Her fingers moved absently over the polished wood. The outburst in the Lounge had been uncharacteristic of her usually composed demeanor. She had always been one to weigh her words carefully, to consider the implications of her actions before speaking. Yet today, the words had flown out of her mouth before she had the chance to stop them, leaving her feeling exposed.
As she sat in the chair behind her desk, Eulailia’s dark eyes traced the edges of the room, taking in the familiar surroundings of the neatly arranged stacks of data pads, the personal mementos from her travels, the carefully tended plants that added a touch of green to the sterile space. Each item was a reminder of her journey, but tonight they seemed like remnants of a past she was beginning to question.
Her mind drifted back to her childhood, a life of privilege and protection, where every need was anticipated, every mishap cushioned. Her parents had meant well, of course, but their love had come wrapped in layers of control and expectation. She had grown up with a sense of duty, molded into the perfect representation of their success. But that life had left her unprepared for the harsh realities of space, where respect wasn’t given freely but earned through merit and resilience.
Eulailia knew that her choice to join Starfleet was as much about proving herself as it was about seeking independence. She had thrived on the USS Discovery and had carved out a place for herself on the Asimov. Yet now, she was questioning whether she had made the right choices, if perhaps her ambitions and drive had led her to a place where she no longer felt fulfilled. She glanced at the viewport, where the stars outside seemed indifferent to her turmoil. If she left the Asimov, where would she go? Her extensive travels had taught her much about the universe, but she had always been anchored by Starfleet, a structure that offered both challenge and comfort. The thought of starting new was scary.
Perhaps she could take a sabbatical, explore a new role outside of Starfleet, or engage in diplomatic missions that aligned more closely with her true passions. Maybe she would delve into research or consult on cultural exchange programs anything that might provide a fresh perspective and reinvigorate her sense of purpose.
Her mother’s words echoed in her mind, reminding her that her true strengths lay in her perceptive abilities, not in the superficial qualities that others valued. Maybe it was time to find a path that allowed her to use those skills in a different capacity, to make a tangible impact in ways that aligned more closely with her evolving sense of self.Eulailia took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her decision press upon her. She had always been one to think before acting, and this moment was no different. The next steps she took would need to be deliberate and thoughtful, guided by her own desires rather than the expectations of others.
Eulailia’s fingers hesitated over the comm panel. She knew that discussing her thoughts with Captain Kiernan would be the first step in charting her new course, whether that meant finding a different role within Starfleet or taking a different path entirely. With a press of the button, the comm panel lit up, and she tapped in the command to place a call to Captain Kiernan. The screen blinked for a moment and she waited for her to appear on the small viewscreen.
Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)Sara was just about to wrap up her day when a call came in from elsewhere in the ship. Lieutenant Dacascos. She accepted. “Lieutenant, hello. What can I do for you?” Her demeanor was fixedly professional, covering over a layer of concern.

Eulailia straightened in her chair, the professionalism in Captain Kiernan’s voice grounding her, but also reminding her of the seriousness of her decision. She cleared her throat softly, her fingers resting on the edge of the desk as if to steady herself.
“Captain,” she began, her voice even but carrying a hint of the turmoil she’d been feeling. “I’ve been doing some thinking… about my place on the Asimov. About what I want moving forward.”
She could feel anxiety as the words came out. Her eyes moved and focused on the viewport again, the stars a distant backdrop to the conflict within her. “I’ve been questioning whether my current role is where I can make the most impact, where I can truly grow. I… don’t feel as fulfilled as I once did.”There. The truth, spoken aloud for the first time. The moment it left her lips, a mixture of relief came over her. She waited for the captain’s response, knowing that this conversation could lead her down a path she hadn’t anticipated when she first joined Starfleet.
Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)Sara nodded and considered for a moment. “Very well. Is it operations or the Asimov you’re feeling… stifled by?” Sara settled back in her chair and analyzed Eulailia. Something to talk with Shara about. One of the crew wanted out.

She considered the question. “I think it’s more about the Asimov than operations itself,” she replied slowly, choosing her words carefully. “I’ve appreciated my time in operations, but lately… it feels like I’m on the sidelines. I want to be where the action is, where decisions are made that can affect lives.”
She paused, letting her words settle, hoping they resonated with Captain Kiernan. “I want to take on more responsibility, perhaps in a command capacity,” Eulailia continued, her voice steadier now. “I’ve been thinking about how I can contribute more meaningfully to our missions. I’m ready for the challenge.”
The silence on the other end of the line felt heavy, but Eulailia stood her ground. It was a relief to voice her aspirations, but she also felt vulnerable.
“I believe in the Asimov’s mission,” Eulailia added, “But I need to feel like I’m an integral part of that mission, not just someone managing logistics from a distance.” Her eyes narrowed slightly as she focused on the Captain’s image on the screen. “I want to grow. I want to be challenged.”
Eulailia felt anxiety as she awaited the Captain’s response, hoping that her directness wouldn’t backfire. What if Sara thought she was being presumptuous? In any case she knew she had to express her feelings, this was her future they were discussing. The uncertainty was suffocating, yet she felt liberated by the honesty she had just shared.
She fidgeted with a loose strand of her curly hair, nervously twisting it around her finger. Eulailia had always respected Captain Kiernan; she was known for her sharp insight and fair judgment. Eulailia wanted to know if her desires would be met with encouragement or if they would be met with the kind of skepticism that could shatter her ambitions before they even had a chance to take flight.
“Captain,” she added, “I believe I can make a difference if given the opportunity. I just need a chance to prove it.”Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)
Sara thought it over for a minute. “One question, Lieutenant.” She became an intimidating figure of command. “What do you actually want to do? Move departments? Change the scope of what Operations handles? Work toward your XO certification? You want to do more. Thats good, ambition will take you places in Starfleet. But it can’t be blind wanting more. You need focus. So tell me what this actually looks like to you.” Sara wondered if Eulailia had expected her to make the decision on the spot. This was a big move. Dacascos needed to know what she was doing.
