Sara couldn’t focus on anything, her conscience kept distracting her. She was cursed with memory. She had ambushed a new, young officer. It all replayed in her mind. She gripped his collar. “I didn’t even ask you to be here, much less for your opinion. I indulged your presence because you’re Intel. It should be obvious that the content of conversations in this room is need-to-know basis anyway. But if you can’t keep pace with the realities of this mission and the situation we’re in… Of course there’s something else going on. That’s why we investigate, not cover it up. We have to find our ‘John Doe’ But if knowing one guy who fought the augments makes you an expert-“ she drew her pistol. “then you shouldn’t have any trouble finding him.” She turned the weapon so the grip faced Kohanna. “Go on then. Find him.” She let go of his collar. “Figure out what he wants and beat him. Shouldn’t be too hard because you had drinks with a guy who did it once.”she’d been so hard on him. And all because he’d mad a suggestion in a staff meeting. She was the one who was supposed to maintain control and order. It needed fixing. =/\=Blackwolf report to CO’s ready room. Non-emergency.=/\= She sat back in her chair and wondered what she’d say.
-CO
There it was, he thought, another dressing down because he came into the mission blind through no fault of his own. He had tried to figure out what was going on with the Asimov before he arrived. His investigations resulted in no information. That mission had been so hush-hush, his clearance didn’t get him anywhere.
=^=Aye, aye, Captain. On my way.=^=
He stood from his spot at the helm and made his way to the Ready Room. He could feel the eyes of the others on the bridge watching him. Did they have any idea what was coming? Would he be stripped of his position in Intel? Would he be relegated strictly to helm and shuttle duties?
Taking a deep breath, he rang the chime to the Ready Room. . . .
Lieutenant Kohana Black Wolf
Intelligence Officer/Helm USS Asimov“Come in!” Sara’s alto voice came from the other side of the door.
“Lieutenant Black Wolf. Have a seat, please.” She gestured to the chair across from her. “Anything from the replicator?”
He took a seat in front of her desk. “No, thank you, Captain.” Surprising start to a dressing down, Kohana thought.
“Lieutenant… I owe you an apology. We had never even met and when I lost my head it was entirely directed at you. I apologize. I should have better composure than that if I’m going to be in command. I would like” she extended her hand for a handshake “to try meeting you again. Do it better this time.”
-CO
The helmsman kept his composure and did his damnedest to hide his surprise at this turn Woooow, I did not see that coming.
Standing again, he accepted her handshake. As he returned to his said, “Thank you, Captain. I would like to forget that episode and try this again. Apology accepted.”
Lieutenant Kohana Black Wolf
Intelligence Officer/Helm USS Asimov“Thank you.” Sara nodded and smiled kindly. “So tell me about yourself Lieutenant. What’s your background, pilot or spy first?”
-CO
Kohana smiled. “Pilot. My father served in Flight Control. His main job was to fly shuttles. He retired as an MCPO. After retiring, he bought a couple of old shuttles, refurbished them and started giving tours through Earth’s Badlands, which are located in the south-west corner of South Dakota. By the time I was 10, I was flying the tours on my own, while he was giving the presentations. By the time I entered the Academy, I probably had more flight hours in than most of those who would be graduating.”
He readjusted himself in the chair, now more at ease. “it only made sense that my MOS would be flight control. I think I may have had some help from someone at the Academy who was friends with my father. I was definitely pushed in that direction by counselors, though I didn’t need much convincing. I knew that what I wanted to do. Not just shuttles, but pilot the big ships, too. I put my heart and soul into becoming a helmsman. The “spy” stuff, as you put it came during my second year at the Academy.”

Sara chuckled “That makes sense. Didn’t hit me, well, didn’t stick to me until I had already been in command of this ship for a while. Well- the previous iteration of this ship. So you’re at least second generation Starfleet. Respect the tradition. I’m third generation. My father’s an engineering instructor at the Academy. You might have crosses paths, he teaches small craft design and maintenance.”
-CO
“The name doesn’t sound familiar. I may have been able to test out of his class. My father taught me a lot about the maintenance. He told me if I was going to be flying his shuttles, I better know how to fix them, too. So, I had a pretty good knowledge for their upkeep, by the time I entered the Academy.”
“It’s very possible.” Sara nodded. “His course is entry level design and maintenance so if you tested out of any of those classes, his would be first up.”
“What motivated you to pursue command, Captain. You’re file says you started out in science.”
Lieutenant Kohana Black Wolf
Intelligence Officer/Helm USS AsimovShe laughed. “I’ve always had the bug. When I was a kid and they’d ask at school what I wanted to do when I grew up, I’d say Starfleet Captain. They’d always say ‘well not everyone makes it to Captain, but you can definitely try to join Starfleet.’ I got my first DH assignment after taking the first Academy continuing education command course. I had studied all the science and all the protocols of running a department. And I was immediately in over my head. Reality was so different from the textbooks, it was a cold shock. Same with being an XO. And a CO. Never quite what I expected. I guess part of me is still a little kid wanting to lead my crew on adventures.”
-CO
“That’s true,” the junior intel officer replied. “No amount of book learning is going to prepare you for a command position. I’d say it’s 10% books and the rest is 50% experience and 50% instincts, give or take a few points either way. And instincts can’t be taught–you either have it or you don’t. The ones that do have it become great captains and CO’s. The ones that don’t usually down in history for not-so-legendary reasons.”
Lieutenant Kohana Black Wolf
Intelligence Officer/Helm USS Asimov“Your estimates are probably just about right.” She chuckled. “History is rarely neutral toward someone. Especially authority figures. What about you? Do you have command aspirations?” Sara wondered if he was content flying the ship, or if he had his own goals to take her job someday
-CO
Kohana thought for a moment before answering. “Maybe. . . someday. I do plan on taking the command school track at some point. Become a department head or even XO. Right know, I enjoy being in the field or sitting at the helm more than being in command. Maybe I’ll change my opinion after I’ve experienced that first hand. No offense, Captain, but right now, I feel sitting in the command chair and giving orders isn’t my cup of tea. I like to be in on the action.”
Lieutenant Kohana Black Wolf
Intelligence Officer/Helm USS Asimov
Sara nodded. “That makes total sense. If what you’re doing now is making you happy, then you should pursue that. You are eligible for a Department Head position. Commander Calloway is taking over as XO. So her position is vacant. I wanted to offer because when I was a Junior Officer, I wasn’t anywhere close to done and in one hell of a hurry. So if taking over as CIO interests you, it’s yours. And you can continue to use the helm as your bridge station.”
