Dr Jorath looked over at the engineer working the transporter, “Permission to come aboard?” he asked.

“Permission granted Lieutenant Jorath” the young engineer responded.

Jorath Stepped down off the transporter with nothing more than a small bag of personal items from home. He had transferred his experiments to his apprentice since the Asimov did not have the facilities to accommodate the complex exobiology work he had been doing. “Thank you Ensign, please inform the XO and Captain of my arrival” he finally responded and left for his new quarters.

After dropping his bag in his quarters Jorath worked his ways down to his office, he wanted to get a feel for it and the lab. He looked over the moderate but suitable office it would do nicely, its not like he would spend much time here.

Exiting the office, he looked over the lab and the various crew members that worked there. Not wanting to disturb their work he would leave introductions for later. Instead, he looked over various elements of the lab which was mostly set up for surveillance and intelligence gathering. Impressive to be sure but not what he was used to.

Feeling a little out of his element he crossed the hall and entered astrometrics which was thankfully empty. “Computer Display the Trill home world and surrounding system” he said. He sat and watched his home world thinking about how long it had been since he had been home.

OOC: Please feel free to jump in and introduce yourself if you want.

The door to astrometrics slid open and a tall woman stepped, the door the only noise that announced her presence. Plain brown hair was swept up into a simple twist, emphasizing the tidy nature of the rest of her appearance- her red uniform with three pips was in order, was were her boots. Foggy blue eyes watched him for a moment. “I hear Trill is a great place for a beach vacation. So not my vibe though.”

Varen turned his head and shoulders slightly to see who had enter the room. His eyes shifted to the collar briefly to check rank but recognized Commander Calloway’s face from her picture.
“Commander.” He said as he rotated his heel and came to attention. He was not sure yet how strict protocol was on the ship. The commander spoke and seemed relaxed enough but better not push his luck on day one.

Somewhere in a Human mid-life, Shara had never been one for formalities. There were times, of course, but in general she fund it got in the way of… well, most everything. She grimaced slightly and waved him off. “Oh please, not with me. It’s entirely wasted on me, I assure you.” She might have seemed disgruntled, but there was a gleam in her eyes. “And I think you’ll find that despite some significant downtime, there’s an general lack of fuss the crew has after our last mission. Not sure it’s going to go away. But I would keep the formalilty for the Captain for at least the first introduction. You can go from there.”

He looked at her and relaxed, turning his attention back to the screen. He too found formalities time consuming while necessary at times was far from efficient. It would be a relief to not have to snap to attention every five minutes while he was trying to work.

“Good to know” he responded briefly, “So if beaches are not your thing, what might you be into?” he asked. Trill was a vast array of experiences to be had for sure.

She drew closer, coming to lean her hip against the console as she faced him. “Depends. I like a quiet place. My husband and I have 800 acres nestled in the mountains. It’s become my new favourite place. A place where you can become one with the land.” She tilted her head and looked up at the screen. “What about yourself ,Varen Jorath,”-she shifted her intense gaze back to him-“where would you prefer to find yourself?

“I’m where I belong for the time” he said returning her gaze. “My duty is to my people” he noted. Looking back to his home. “But vacation is another matter.” He said punching up a location on Trill that brought him fond memories.

“look here, “ he said as he image zoomed to a remote area filled with forest mountains and twelve water falls webbing off a large river. “It is difficult to explain but if you stand here” He said pointing to a place on a mountain summit across from the falls. “Just after sunrise, you will see colors so vibrant you can almost taste them. “ he paused remembering the first time his father had taken him there.
“The entire forest goes quiet for minutes as every living thing in the area seems to stop and take it in, you and your Husband should visit someday” he finished

“It’s lovely,” she said softly. “And we do get around the quadrants so you never know, we might make it there.”

Calloway studied him for several moments, her gaze deep and penetrating. “You’re on a very different sort of vessel, Lieutenant. And you’re taking on more responsibility than you have before. Do you feel ready for it?”

~Shara Calloway, XO

Closing down the display he focused on what she had said. “Well Jareth has had leadership roles with significant responsibility through out his life time.” he noted deflecting momentarily.

“I am, However, used to spending most my time in a lab keeping to myself. ” he noted leaning onto the console. “I would say i’m excited, and I am, however it would be a lie to suggest i’m not a little nervious.” he finalized.

“Nothing wrong wth nerves. It usually means you’re doing something you care about in some way. Not a bad place to start.” She tilted her head and considered hi for a moment. What’s the thing you’re most nervous about?”

~Shara Calloway, XO

He smiled “I am not entirely sure.” He responding pulling his hand subconsciously to his chin, him mind was obviously searching for an answer. “If I were to wager a guess it’s likely do to the fact that my field of expertise is astrophysics and exobiology and I’m not sure how that will apply to intelligence work.” he pushed off the console and moved over to the replicator.

“Andorian Tea, Hot” he requested and looked to the executive officer, “Would you like some?” he asked

She debated for all two seconds before giving a half-shrug. “Sure. Coffee, black. I’m mostly caffeine at this point in my life, why pause now?”

“The thing about Intelligence work is that most of the time it’s not what you think it is. Most people have the covert black ops version in their mind, and it’s a fair assessment. It’s what I did most of my time working directly for Intelligence. But the reality is a lot different. Many Intelligence officers are dealing with intelligence, information. And you’d be surprised how often we need experts in the various sciences to help us understand what it is we’ve come across. That’s why you have a whole department here, and the people who work under you aren’t all computer scientists either.”

~Shara Calloway, XO

He paused for a moment “Coffee, Black , Hot” he said to the computer then handed her the coffee. “Yes team work is important.” he said leaning back against the consol.

She took the mug and let it warm her hands. It was funny how such a simple thing could ground her better than any ‘technique’ she had been taught. She drank some coffee, the hotness not bothering her one bit.

“It should prove to be a valuable experience. ” he took a sip off his tea. “It will be good for me to work with a team most of the work I had been doing involved most of us branching off in our own area’s and then coming back together months later to reveal what we had learned. “

He smiled broadly, “This should be a nice change of pace.” he Finished

Calloway nodded. “Not only that, but aside form your own team, you’re a member of the senior staff. We expect everyone to work together, to collaborate.”
