The Asimov hummed with the familiar hum of a starship in motion and on this particular day, Laila found herself with some free time. As she strolled through the corridors of the ship, she couldn’t help but think of her counselor friend, Paddy. He had a calming presence that Laila often sought out, and today seemed like the perfect opportunity for some conversation.

Laila made her way to the counseling section of the ship, nodding at passing crew members who were going about their duties. The door to Patrick’s office loomed ahead, and with a soft exhale, she pressed the chime.

Dacascos, COO

“Come on in,” the voice of McMillan came from the other side of the door, “Lieutenant Dacascos,” he said with a grin as the doors parted, “What can I do for you?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Laila stepped into Patrick’s office, acknowledging his greeting with a matching grin. “Paddy,” she began, her tone friendly yet professional. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything important.” she walked into the office and took a moment to glance around the room. “You know, you never completed my onboarding evaluation. It’s been like a year or two.” Laila laughed. “It seems no one on the ship has noticed anyway. So what you are up to? Do you have time to grab a bite to eat?”

Dacascos, COO

“Lalia, nothing would make my day brighter than to spend an afternoon learning about you? What do you think, the mess hall? Or would you rather take dinner in here?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

As she leaned against the edge of Patrick’s desk, she laughedand said, “Oh, Paddy, I hope you didnt think I was serious about the evaluation,” she said, waving off the evaluation matter with a dismissive flick of her hand. “I just needed an excuse to drop by and brighten your day.” She chuckled, her laughter filling the room.
She folded her arms, studying Patrick for a moment. “The mess hall sounds perfect,” she decided, her tone casual. “I’ve been wanting to try some food from your ancestral homeland, Ir…Ireland, right? You in the mood for some casual conversation and Ireland replicated food, Counselor?” Her gaze held a hint of a smile as she awaited his response, already relishing the prospect of an enjoyable meal with him.

Dacascos, COO

“How about I show you some real Irish authenticity? I do have some holodeck time to use up?” Paddy had a cheeky grin, he liked Dacascos quite a lot, but never really prided himself on being much of a ladies’ man.

Eulailia felt a surge of satisfaction as she saw the cheeky grin spread across Patrick’s face. It was always amusing to see him light up in response to her playful banter. She tilted her head slightly, considering his offer.

“Holodeck time, huh?” she mused, tapping a finger against her chin. “That sounds fun. I’d love to experience some authentic Irish charm, especially if it’s coming from a true Irishman like yourself.”

She stepped away from the desk, her movements graceful as she walked over to where Patrick stood. Leaning in slightly, she lowered her voice, her eyes sparkling mischievously. “Lead the way, Counselor. I’m curious to see what you have in store for me.” she said as she extended her arm toward the door.

Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)

“Would you care to accompany me to the veiled hills of Dublin Lalia?” Paddy stopped at the door and adjusted his arm so that the COO could slip hers around it if she felt that way inclined.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counselor-

Eulailia couldn’t help but grin at Patrick’s invitation. The Irish charm he exuded was infectious, and she found herself eager to see what he had planned for their holodeck adventure. She looped her arm through his.

“Veiled hills of Dublin, you say?” she replied, her voice carrying a hint of excitement. “I’m intrigued, Counselor. Let’s go. I’m eager to immerse myself in the charm of your homeland.” Laila shot him a teasing glance before gesturing toward the door with a flourish.

As they strolled toward the holodeck, Laila couldn’t contain her curiosity about the upcoming Dublin experience. She leaned in, her voice a conspiratorial whisper, “So these veiled hills you mentioned, what’s the story behind them? Is it some hidden gem only the locals know about? Anything I should be prepared for or look out for in particular?”

Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)

“There’s a verse of an old poem from early on in Ireland’s history that I think best describes some of the views you might see Laila:

O, kindly, generous Irish land,
So leal and fair and loving!
No wonder the wandering Celt should think
And dream of you in his roving.
The alien home may have gems and gold,
Shadows may never have gloomed it;
But the heart will sigh for the absent land
Where the love-light first illumed it.”

Eulailia’s excitement swelled with each step towards the holodeck. Her mind was filled with the thought of experiencing Ireland’s beauty in the simulated world. She gathered from the poem that the Irish land must be like the one you read in those old storybook tales they used to tell on Earth of magical dragons and unicorns. However, she knew this was silly, and she was thinking like a little girl. She remembered after she announced that she was joining the Academy, her cousin Najma told her, “The world is not full of unicorns and beautiful magical creatures, Laila. And you will never survive in it or make it out of the Academy because you are too sheltered.” Despite Najma’s harsh words, Eulailia couldn’t help but admire her cousin’s resilience and strength.
With a grin, she looked at Patrick. The Irish charm he exuded was infectious.
“We should dance, then go on a tour, then eat some of the local food,” she suggested with enthusiasm. Her eyes narrowed for a second as she thought about food. “What do the Irish eat anyway?”

Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)

“Potatoes and cabbage,” Paddy replied, “Lots of it.” Then he stopped for a second, “Dancing? Are you asking me on a date Lallia?”

Laila’s heart skipped a beat as Patrick’s question hung in the air. A date? She couldn’t deny the excitement that bubbled within her at the thought, but she needed to maintain her composure as she was inexperienced in these types of situations. Presenting a smile, Laila raised an eyebrow slightly, injecting a hint of playfulness into her voice.
“Well, that depends on whether you’re a gentleman and can provide a memorable experience,” she replied, her tone light. “No pressure though,” she added with a chuckle. “Anyway, potatoes sound great.” She shifted the conversation. “However, I’ve never had them with cabbage. But I’m willing to give it a try because I’m curious. And afterward, you can take me dancing, perhaps teach me some Irish dances?” She gave him a meaningful look, hoping he’d pick up on her subtle invitation to continue their date together.

Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)

“I know just the place,” Paddy replied, “Computer, load program McMillan Beta 36 and route to Holodeck One.” At the computer’s acknowledgement, Paddy arched an eyebrow, “Riverdance on Broadway, dinner first at an Irish Bar on Long Island I used to frequent on counselling excursions to New New York. I think we can safely call this our first date.”

A rush of warmth flooded her cheeks. It seemed her subtle hint hadn’t gone unnoticed, and she couldn’t wait to see what the evening held in store. “That sounds wonderful,” Laila said, her voice betraying a hint of eagerness. She glanced at him, catching his eye with a smile. “Riverdance on Broadway and dinner at an Irish bar? You certainly know how to make a girl feel special, Paddy.”

Lieutenant Dacascos
(Chief Operations Officer)

“I wouldn’t be an Irishman if I did Laila,” he extended an open hand, “We’re here, shall we?”

Patrick’s Irish charm was undeniable, and she found herself drawn to his easy confidence. Taking his hand, she let him guide her towards their next destination.
