“It’s both a very long and very short tale,” Mwezi chuckled dryly. “I might take you up on that offer,” he lifted one of his arms. His forearm was wrapped with what looked like braided leather. “Uri, please display Lt. Harry Archer’s classification rating.” A small holographic screen was projected from the strap, and Mwezi flicked his eyes across the screen before dismissing it with a flick of his wrist. “Alright, now I know what I can and can’t tell you,” he nodded solemnly.

“But for now, the tour!” he gestured vaguely towards the engine room.

Harry nodded toward the XO, before indicating toward a set of ladders in the corner of the room. “Those go up to Deck 7, but there isn’t really that much up there beyond the upper warp core assembly, and a few consoles. I expect the view is quite impressive, if you have a thing for heights.” he said. “Alternatively, I was going to check over the systems in the Secure Communications Centre and Astrophysics if you wanted a trip down to Deck 9.” This time he indicated back toward the turbo lift.

“Up first?” Mwezi suggested. This unguided tour was, honestly just as unguided for him as it was for the CE. Mwezi generally avoided the domains of the Department heads unless he was needed in the area, and he hadn’t really been needed in Main Engineering since the commissioning of the new ship. It was nice to get a look around. “I’m not squeamish about heights, although I don’t enjoy them as much as some people I know.”

“Up it is then” he said, moving across to the vertical ladder bridging the two decks. He confidently ascended the ladder at a fair pace, before hopping on to the deck above. From there, Harry could see the glow of the warp core bathing lower engineering, and the gentle throb of console lights around the gantry. He touched a control for a brief moment, and the area was lit up in a more useful warm-white glow from the overhead. He paused, waiting of Mwezi to finish his ascent.

“There you go, talk about a view.” he said with a smile, as he cast his gaze over the deck below. The warp core could be seen through the gap in the deck, and some of the other areas of engineering could be seen through the holes in the grating that formed the gantry they were on.

Mwezi followed Archer up to the gantry, stepping carefully and hunching over slightly, seemingly worried he might bump into or break something. With the man’s height of nearly two and a half meters, that might not be an unfounded worry. “It is quite a view,” he agreed, turning around to view the warp core and other sights.

“Aye, it is.” Harry said, somewhat absentmindedly as he became entranced by the warp core’s pulsing. A few seconds later he broke his gaze. “Ahh, sorry, I always find it so relaxing; it’s almost like it’s got its own personality.” he said with a grin.

“Shall we head on to the Secure Communications Centre?”

“Lead the way,” Mwezi gestured, then realised that he was between Archer and the ladder. “Ah, I’ll lead the way,” he chuckled, then turned and began to descend.
