Mwezi sat facing the viewscreen, doing his best to restrain the excitement from bleeding into his physicality. His knee bounced up and down as he watched space fly past them through the warp bubble. He was going home. Well, not truly home, his old house and family were two centuries in the past and an entire universe away, but at the same time, truly home. He would see his beloved Shilo and Kula, and that wasn’t all! Some of the senior staff were coming along for his promotion ceremony, which he really appreciated. He’d invited several people, but of course not everyone could make it. Most of the crew remained on the Asimov, while those who were attending the promotion were aboard a small transport vessel they’d rented.

They were holding the ceremony on Galdor for… sentimental reasons. Also because legally, Mwezi was still an exchange officer and a member of the IAF. He’d never taken any courses at Starfleet Academy, after all. Regardless, here he was, visiting home, and–

Mwezi’s thoughts were interrupted by a message coming in on the comms.

Laila sat quietly at her station, her fingers working the controls of the shuttle’s console with practiced ease. Her thoughts drifted to the upcoming promotion ceremony for Commander Mwezi, a moment she considered a great honor. Mwezi had not only been her superior officer but also a mentor, patiently guiding her through the complexity of her duties and teaching her the complex art of using the fangs, a skill she still struggled to master but was getting better at. His support and encouragement had boosted her confidence, and she felt privileged to celebrate this milestone in his career by his side.

And then there was Shara, whom Laila also considered a mentor. Shara’s wisdom and expertise had been important to her, and she greatly admired her, although she tried to keep her admiration subtle, figuring that from her sometimes cold exterior, Shara was not one to like being admired.

=/\=Urgent assistance requested. Starfleet vessel within range, response requested. Disaster imminent. IASS Kelpie broadcasting. Repetition. Urgent assistance requested.=/\=

The voice transmitting sounded stilted and unsure, almost artificial.

Mwezi, XO

OOC: This is a short, self-run thing, I expect it only to run for a couple of months. I’m also gonna request that the number of participants be limited, because this is explicitly not a ship-wide event. I would ask participation to be limited to 3 people other than me, if anyone drops out, other people can join in retroactively.

It had been a strange shift that landed her on this vessel. In many ways, Shara Calloway was far more comfortable on this small freighter than she ever would be on a state-of-the-art starship. It was the honesty in its roughness, its simplicity. What you saw was what you got, just like her. So while she felt comfortable here, it was still a surprise that she had been invited to go with Mwezi. It was an honour (one she did and would not take lightly) and she was still strangely uncertain. As if she was waiting for someone to tell her it was a mistake. Silly? Perhaps. But for a woman who was still learning to embrace a life out of the shadows, this was a part of the process.

Swivelling towards the console, Calloway looked up the vessel in question, letting someone else handle the sensors. Everyone was skilled here and it was easier to stick to their respective areas.

The IASS designation was assigned to the small fleet of the Galdor-Okinos-Kalari Alliance, the letters standing for Interstellar Alliance Space Ship. While the computer aboard the small transport ship was small, it had the requested information. The Kelpie was a small science vessel, assigned to maintain orbit around the 5th planet in the Umogvi system. Seeking information on the system would result in a few pieces of information. The system was quite close to Kalar, one of the GOK-Alliance homeworlds. There was an M-Class planet and a K-Class moon in the system. The K-Class moon orbited around the 7th planet in the system and had a healthy population of Kalarans. Finally, there was no information stored on the computer systems regarding Umogvi V, except for a small note: “Classified”.

Meanwhile, seeing no one had jumped to answer the call, Mwezi stepped up to the comm panel and made an attempt to connect to the Kelpie. “IASS Kelpie, this is the SS Jaunt. Our ship isn’t Starfleet, but we aboard it are. Please transmit your location and the cause of your distress.”

There was a long moment where the original message looped before it stuttered and responded to Mwezi’s comm.

=^=SS Jaunt! Gratitude extended. Location transmitted. Orbiting assigned coordinates. Distress… Crew… malfunctioning?=^= The voice seemed confused for a moment. =^=Disaster. Danger detected. Ignored. Requesting Assistance?=^=

“We’re Starfleet, Kelpie. We’re on our way…”

Mwezi glanced at Shara, confused, then stepped over to the navigation panel. “I’ve got the co-ordinates, I’m putting them into the computer now. Can you make anything of all that?” He gestured to the comm panel, which now hung silent… waiting.

But now, as they responded to the distress call from the IASS Kelpie, Laila snapped out of her thoughts and focused on the task at hand. The urgency in the voice on the other end of the transmission spurred her into action.
“Coordinates locked in,” she confirmed, glancing up at Commander Mwezi . “We’re ready to engage warp drive on your command, Commander,” Laila stated, her voice steady despite the underlying tension. “Let’s get to the Kelpie and see what assistance we can offer.”
As she spoke, Laila’s hands continued to work swiftly over the controls.
