“C-codes for the stellar device.” Doppler responded, wincing a little, but containing himself from making any loud noises. “I- it sounds insane but I’m from the future… their star was… on the verge of a supernova. The device was meant to remove some of the heavier elements from the star, let it keep going a little longer… I was the operator. It worked… partially. Their planet still got roasted. They want to use it to remove Earth’s Iron core and make it collapse…”

Doppler

She continued to treat his wounds gently as they talked. “We were sent to destroy a weapon with few details. How do disable and destroy the device?” Shara asked.

Cmdr. Shara Calloway, Chief Intelligence Officer

Doppler coughed, bringing his hand up to the side of his head. “The, ah… command codes. If you can get me there, I can punch them in… it needs voice… recognition. Disabling the Stellar Device is easier than activating it, thankfully. Just need to… remove the activation… ah… spark plug of sorts. I don’t know where they’re storing my shuttle though… the Stellar Device is built into its structure.”

Doppler

Shara looked at Mwezi and gave him a significant look. She wanted his opinion. Did they trust him? This wasn’t just her on this mission and she wanted his thoughts.

Mwezi considered the man carefully, then nodded. “If he betrays us, it’s easy enough to shoot him. If he’s being genuine, it’d be stupid to leave him here. Either way, it’s better to bring him with us.”

Executive Officer USS Asimov

“Agreed.” He was already untied, but Shara slipped her hand under his elbow. “Easy now. Let’s go,” she said, helping him gently to his feet, knowing his body was going to be sore from his treatment. She could have given Doppler a warning about not doing anything stupid but she figured Mwezi’s comments were more than enough.

“You know where the, uh, Stellar Device is being kept?”

Doppler nodded, leaning on Shara for support as he gestured. “I can point the way. They dragged me back and forth enough times to remember it.”

Shara gestured for Mwezi to take point. Careful to not jostle him as they moved, the older woman was clearly strong than her frame might suggest. Shara was lean, yes, but lean muscle, all constantly honed. “How did you end up here?” she asked as he directed them.

“After my mission failed, the supernova sent my ship flying out at speeds I’d never experienced before. This ship,” Doppler gestured to the corridors, “was my escort craft, they were supposed to get my little ship in and out of the stellar radius, since my ship doesn’t have much in the way of impulse, let alone warp power. They got tossed alongside me and when everything settled, we’d traveled 400 years back in time. That was 30 years ago. I don’t know how we did it but that’s what happened.”

Mwezi furrowed his brow and glanced at Shara, trying to think of how he would respond to such news if he didn’t live in a world where something similar had already happened.

“Huh,” she said. “Well, I don’t know about that much time travel on that scale, but I know about being where you don’t expect,” Sharah said as they followed his directions towards their quarry. “This device. What do you know about it?”

~Shara Calloway, CIO

“It… creates a small antimatter pulse,” Doppler replied as they walked. Mwezi scouted ahead of the pair and ended up shooting one alien and slicing his knife across the throat of another. Doppler winced at the sight of the blood. “I wasn’t part of the team that developed it, but… I was chosen to pilot it… I was a pretty good pilot back in the day. Talented… Kinda lost that now after so many years…” He looked down at his hands, which were shaking as he held them up.

“How long have you been here?” Shara asked as they navigated through the ship. All the while her mind was working on how the device might work. She had an idea though and agreed that destroying the weapon was paramount.

“Ah… hard to say exactly. I landed in this time period… twenty, maybe twenty-two years ago? Landed on an uninhabited jungle moon. Didn’t know where or when I was, other than the past. Figured I had a better chance of surviving on the surface of the moon rather than out in space with my non-warp capable shuttle,” Doppler paused to cough. “These guys found me about a month ago, and have been repairing the shuttle and hounding me for info on it ever since.”

Mwezi stopped at a t-intersection and considered both directions, then chose the left path.
