Liam leaned against the console in Main Engineering, a satisfied grin on his face. After hours of meticulous work, he had finally completed the repairs on the replicator systems. He wiped his brow with the back of his hand and reached for the nearest coolant container which he’d replicated earlier, relishing the refreshing sensation as the cold liquid trickled down his throat. But his moment of triumph was short-lived as a familiar scent invaded his senses once again. The unmistakable aroma of tea wafted through the air, causing Liam to wrinkle his nose in disgust. He glanced around, trying to locate the source of the offending smell, and his eyes landed on Lieutenant Archer, stationed across the engineering deck.
Archer, a senior officer with a penchant for tea, was engrossed in his work, seemingly oblivious to Liam’s silent protest. Liam clenched his jaw, resisting the urge to voice his disdain for the beverage aloud. Instead, he focused on controlling his temper and maintaining his professionalism in the face of his adversity.
Taking a deep breath, he squared his shoulders and reminded himself of his duty as an engineer aboard the Asimov. Despite his personal aversion to tea, he pushed off from the console and made his way across the engineering deck, ready to lend a hand wherever needed.
As he approached Archer, Liam called out in his distinctive Aussie drawl, “Arvo Lieutenant”, a friendly grin spreading across his face as he approached the senior officer. “You look like you’re knee-deep in it over there. Need a bit of a digger to lend you a hand?” He gestured towards the console where Lieutenant Archer was engrossed in his work, his tone laced with genuine willingness to assist.

USS AsimovHarry looked up at Liam as came into his peripheral vision. It took Harry a few moments to register what the Ensign had said. Fortunately, he has already picked up on Liam’s willing attitude, so by the time his brain had caught up, he had already extended both a hand and a friendly smile.
“Ensign O’Connor, good to meet you.” he said, glad he had taken the time to quickly look through the personnel files of the engineering crew.
“Your timing is impeccable. The starbase engineers have completed most of their work, but true to their form have done a rush job so they can get a break before the next ship comes into dock.” he said. His youthful grin had disappeared, and his voice came across as slightly irritated. “I mean, it’s all within limits, but new systems shouldn’t just be installed ‘within limits’, they should be operating a peak efficiency.” Harry paused, realising he had got on to his soap box, before looking at Liam.
“Sorry, I don’t mean to sound like it’s your fault…” he paused, looking at Liam. “However, it is our problem.” he said, with a slight chuckle. “Fancy the challenge in making this ship the best in the Fleet?”

Chief EngineerLiam’s heart swelled with pride at Harry’s words, grateful to be working alongside a chief engineer who shared his dedication to excellence. He clasped Harry’s offered hand firmly, returning the friendly smile. “Likewise, boss-cocky,” he replied, feeling a surge of enthusiasm coursing through him, his Aussie twang and slang coming through.
As Harry voiced his frustrations about the rush job done by the starbase engineers, Liam nodded in understanding, his own irritation bubbling to the surface. “I hear you, mate, these starbase dingos dont know the first thing about sailing” he said, his tone tinged with sympathy. “No worries, though. We’ll whip this tinnie into shape in but a jiffy”
Liam knew they were cut from the same cloth, even if he did drink a cuppa no and then - both were driven by a shared commitment to excellence and unwilling to settle for anything less than the best. “So what’s first?”

USS AsimovHarry made a mental note to read up on some Australian parlance; he felt that he could easily mistake a compliment as a barb, and vice-versa. He briefly looked at the console he had been working at, to see what the results were from the diagnostics that he had been running.
“Well, the warp drive is only operating at 85% efficiency.” he said, reading from the display. “It’s not the worst thing on the list, but given that we are meant to be on shore-leave, you can guarantee that we’ll be called into action at a moment’s notice, and having to go haring off at maximum warp to the other side of the galaxy.” He brought up the schematics of the warp core assembly, on a nearby screen. Most of it was green, but a few red and yellow parts of it gently flashed.
“I changed the diagnostic display to show where parts of the assembly is not performing to 95% efficiency.” he indicated. “Funnily enough, it’s everywhere the starbase engineers touched.” he said, with a slight sigh. “Looks like the antimatter injectors are the main cause of the issue; let’s grab a tool kit, and head on down to the lower decks.

Liam nodded to himself, taking note of Harry’s assessment of the warp drive’s efficiency. “Aye, mate, sounds like we’ve got our work cut out for us,” he replied, slipping into his familiar Aussie slang without missing a beat. “Can’t be havin’ our warp drive actin’ up when we’re meant to be enjoyin’ a bit of shore leave, can we?”
Surveying the schematics on the screen, Liam’s brow furrowed as he noted the problematic areas indicated by the flashing red and yellow. “Bloody typical, innit?” he muttered under his breath. “Starbase engineers always messin’ with things they shouldn’t.” With a resigned sigh, he grabbed the tool kit he’d been using to repair the replicators slinging it over his shoulder.
“Right, let’s get crackin’, then” Liam said, “Lead the way Lieutenant”
