Her eyes took him in and for a moment she said nothing, just studied him. Then she snorted. “Don’t be too eager, Wolf. The eager ones die the quickest.” Calloway gestured for him to grab a chair.

As he grabbed a chair, Kohana replied, “Death is not to be feared, Commander. It is part of the life cycle and comes to us all. If I die during a mission, it allows me to pass my wisdom and knowledge on to my descendants.”

“Tell me what you know of this mission first and I’ll fill the rest in.”

“Not a whole lot, I’m afraid. I was ordered to the Asimov, as my skills at both intel and the helm would be useful. I’m aware that the crew is required to go undercover to retrieve two high value targets from the luxury cruiser, Argon Wind, as well as some high value intel or items that are kept in the ships safe. Not much more intel was given to me other than that. I was told that you would provide the specifics, and then do what I do best.”

“And what is it you do best, Leiutenant?” Calloway asked, leaning back in her chair. She was processing how to approach introducing this mission to him, and also the lack of knowledge had had walking into this situation. She understood why, but it did make things complicated. Well, more complicated.

“Infiltration, ex-filtration, remotely disabling security systems, sabotage, and I’m pretty good at flying anything from a runabout to an Invincible-class carrier, too.”

Kohana wasn’t bragging. Items in his personnel file (that weren’t redacted), would show that he was as good as he said. There were many commendations from his commanding officer confirming that fact.

“Those are my areas of expertise, but I’m capable of doing a lot more than that. Whatever you need me to do, commander, I can make it happen.”

Shara nodded. “Good, you’ll need those skills,” she said, leaning back in her chair. “For the nineteen years before I came to this ship I specialized in deep cover operations. Assignments lasting months and even years. I’m exceptionally good at computer programming and mathematics and I trained intensively as a medic for one of my assignments. And the most important thing you should know about me is that I’m sixty-seven years old and I survived all this time in Intelligence, the border wars with the Cardassians and seven years in the Delta Quadrant. I’m notoriously hard to kill,” she said with a gleam in her eyes.

Kohana smiled. “Sixty-seven?”, he inquired. “I have to say, Commander, you wear it well. And knowing that you’re hard to kill, well, that meany years in Intel just proves that you’re good at what you do, even if what you do isn’t always very nice.”

Calloway blew out a breath. “Now, this mission of ours is… complicated, and I’m not going to lie, a part of it is quite personal, but at the end of the day we’re doing this to protect the Federation, to root out a group that would try to destroy it for their own gain. To do that we have to insert Commander Leroy Strickland, Agent Blue, into the Shadow Syndicate, where he will pretend to be the döppleganger that they had planted in his place.” She smirked. “And in order to do that, we need to be acceptable to them. Which means becoming ruthless pirates, with few morals and a loyalty only to ourselves. We’re a crew that turned against Starfleet and killed those that tried to stop us.”

“I’m used to being on the outside, Cmdr. Up until now, I’ve spent my whole Starfleet career helping Romulan refugees finding new homes. After the Federation publicly pulled their support, the Blackbird went “rogue” to offer aide. Found ourselves in the targets of Federation ships plenty of times. . . so, yeah, I know what that’s like.”

“This is more than that. This isn’t us on a mission of mercy and giving others the middle finger Wolf. We’re being asked to be the bad guys, all-in, and whatever moral gymnastics we have to do to convince the Shadow Syndicate that we are serious, we do them and deal with the consequences later.” And yes, we’re doing this to serve a higher purpose, a cause that matters. The people we need to be right now are the worst kind, but also have the respect of others like that. We’ve always had people being wishy-washy, but fortunately no one has gotten killed.”
