It was stupid. Such a weird oversight that while her higher clearance could slip through in a pinch, made her have to stalk about the ship like she didn’t belong there. If she didn’t know any better, she’d think these little slights were on purpose and by design.

They didn’t have tons of time to get comfy with their new ship and so Shara just had to put her big girl panties on, suck it up and ask like a grown-up. Uggh.

She arrived at Bethy’s office, not having interacted one-on-one since the COS ran away from Shara’s botched gathering. She pressed the chime.

~Shara Calloway, CIO

Bethany had an open door policy for her office. So unless she had specifically locked it for security reasons (meetings, classified documents, etc.) the door would open automatically. Which it did so now. Bethany looked up from her screen. It was just known crew on the ship, but Bethany was too well trained to slip out of character now. “Elaine, what can I do for you?”

Beth

She stepped in, fully in character but it was strangely harder since they boarded the new ship. “I was hoping to appeal to logic and you could grant me access to an area of the ship I should have access to but by design I don’t.” She moved out, turned a chair around and straddled it, folding her arms on the desk. “The Secondary Armoury. I know it’s stocked the same as this one next to you, and I have access to this one as automatically, but I don’t with the other. It wasn’t default, and I need you, or the Captain or first mate to give me access. It doesn’t seem right given my role, does it? Especially if there was an emergency, and our mission. And I could just make the access happen myself, but I figured you’d probably take it personally. So I thought I’d just ask. With a pretty please, and a cherry on top?” Shara said simply.

~’Elaine’ Calloway

Beth leaned back and stretched her legs out, folding her hands in her lap. “And are you going to tell me why, not by default but design, you don’t have access but you should?”

Beth

She gazed directly at Beth. “Well, since I have no office, I’m likely to be working out of the Communications Centre. That’s apparently where this Secondary Armoury is, so in an emergency, it makes no sense to have to call and get permission to access it or come running up to you here. Given the nature of our mission, expecting the unexpected is highly encouraged. And I am at least as well trained as your team. I can help. You want my help.” This wasn’t about ego, this was about practicality.

~’Elaine’ Calloway

Beth just stared at her. So it was going to be half answers and misdirects. “I know how well you are trained and what type of help, if you are so inclined, you can provide. However that is not what I asked you.”

Beth

Shara frowned and leaned back, reviewing the exchange. “Well, I can make certain assumptions about why I wasn’t given access to the second armoury, but I’m not sure that is helpful. I just told you why I should have access, but the set-up for this vessel doesn’t seem to factor in an Chief Intelligence Officer into the mix in anyway, at least not in a traditional set-up. Pirates we may be, but we’re still working specific areas. I have another reason I want to have access to that specific armoury for convenience, but I am feeling this is going to be a circular conversation.” She was frustrated by Beth’s obstinance. This should have bene a straightforward exchange. Could nothing about here just be simple?

~’Elaine’ Calloway

Bethany scoffed. So no answers, no cooperation about a simple question. Why was she not surprised. So much for team work. “You know what, even though I am inclined to be a team player, I can’t. Captain acts like I’m beneath the crud stuck on her boot. Since I would like to not spend this trip in the brig or ejected out an airlock, unless I know who you think locked you out, I can’t breath without orders from the Captain.”

Beth

Oh for… Shara took a deep breath. “No one intentionally locked me out. The default for clearance on the ship, as per its specifications is that the Primary Armoury requires CO, XO, COS or DH authorization. But the Secondary armoury doesn’t give default access to department heads. Which I am. All I’m asking for is an exception, because it makes sense.”

~’Elaine’ Calloway

Bethany laughed, but it was dark and a bit disturbing. “That’s funny. You expect Intel work to make sense and their super secret spy ship to work on logic.” She nodded her head slowly. Calloway was aggrevated and wanted special treatment, and rather than asking the captain directly, she thought it would be easier to get Bethany to agree. “Hmmm, so I can guess you intend to spend time in the comms room, and as you said, you have a reason other than convenience to want access. I am responsible for the use, storage, maintenance, and cargo in that armory. I don’t suppose you want to tell me what you are up to, since I keep guards stationed there.” She looked at Calloway. “You want a favor no questions asked, let me see if I have this right, because asking and you answering would be a circular conversation.” Bethany was tired of having her chain yanked by the residential ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’. She thought she could trust Sharah, now she didn’t trust anyone.

Bethany

Shara’s mouth actually dropped open. “Have we sudden’t jumped into an anomaly or something. I never said I wouldn’t answer questions. I’m trying to answer your question but it’s like you’re trying to make everything bigger than it is. I figure I might work out of the comms room, because I don’t have a goddamn office anymore. I had one on our last ship, but there’s no office for me to do my work in. My options are to just use my quarters, but I thought hiding myself away would give people the wrong impression. And yes, if you granted me access I was going to store my share of the weapons I pulled from our Marine heist there, plus some stuff we scored on The Cloud that I was going to talk to you about, but I haven’t had a chance to.” She pushed her chair back and rose and for a brief moment the mask slipped, and her voice softened. “I came to you because I thought you wouldn’t appreciate people going over your head. My mistake. Forget I asked. I’ll figure something else out.”

~Shara

Aaannnddd there it was. The circular ĺ am helping but not answering anything, but make you feel like you are the one in the wrong. It was a simple question. Why did Calloway need the access? But that started a ‘I could respond but it won’t help, just give it to me.’ There was a reason that armory was more restricted. Bethany shrugged. Everyone else went over her, what was one more person?

Bethany

For a moment Shara just stared at the person she had thought was a friend, but clearly she had been mistaken. She didn’t understand why everyone was so dead set against working with her. It honestly just made her sad, in addition to everything else she had been feeling. “Okay then,” she said, and shook her head.

Shara turned on the ball of her foot and left.
