=/\=Understood Doctor. I can be there in half an hour.=/\= Bethany finished up the meeting she was in and then made her way to sickbay. She entered and spoke to the nurse. “Dr. Th’rethiss asked to see me.”

Bethany

The nurse led her to a biobed and let her take a seat. Momentarily, Th’rethiss and Aasrel arrived at the biobed. Aasrel looked crushed. Th’rethiss gave away little on his face. “You were a match for Aasrel on the donor test.” Th’rethiss said, “but I don’t feel comfortable letting you donate until we can treat your illness, for your own health. There’s also the matter of our current mission. This procedure could put you both on medical leave.”

~ Aasrel and Doctor Th’rethiss

Bethany nodded, “I suspected as much. We can’t afford for any of us to be down for extended periods. Not until things calm down for a bit.” She looked at Aasrel, “But now you know you have a match. We don’t want Th’rethiss having to operate if the ship could be attacked. The procedure, I understand, is delicate.” They had to do it before Aasrel found a cure for her. If she stopped producing the psilosynine then he would have no donor. “What do I need to do in the mean time? I know my health is in question, but that isn’t going to change any time soon or at all.” She met Th’rethiss’ gaze steadily. “And given the choice, should it come to it, I choose to donate anyway.”

Bethany

Aasrel wasn’t going to wait to look for her cure. He wanted the donation but as a doctor and as… her boyfriend? he had to prioritise her health over his donation. As Th’rethiss had pointed out (rather harshly), it wasn’t life threatening for him. His paracortex and the gland may have already begun to atrophy. “It is brain-damage-if-it-goes-wrong delicate.” Aasrel said, his voice level and bland like it had been the first time Bethany met him.

Th’rethiss nodded. “That choice will be respected assuming it safely can be. Psilosynine doesn’t last outside the body for very long. It has to injected shortly after it is taken from the donor.” He met Bethany’s steady gaze. “There is nothing you need to do to be a donor except take care of your health until we can cure you. Doctor Izei and I will continue to research a cure.”

Aasrel nodded, “I have been looking into other cases of psilosynine going somewhere incorrectly. Seeing if it was or could be rerouted. Then if we could do the same for your neurochemical. But if I can’t find a way to fix it and you get worse, then we’ll go ahead and simply remove the gland.” Normally he’d deliver that news more gently, but he remembered she hadn’t wanted her telepathy back, so he figured that idea wouldn’t bother her. It would cure her just the same as rerouting the el-aurian neurochemical would.

~ Aasrel | Doctor Th’rethiss

Bethany listened quietly while they spoke. Aasrel’s donation was important to her. He had a chance to get back what he had lost. If she could help, then she had to help. She needed to do this. She would talk to Th’rethiss later about it. If they couldn’t find a cure she could die and before that happened she wanted him to give Aasrel his chance. She nodded, showing her acknowledgement. “Understood. Is there anything else you need from me right now?”

Bethany

Th’rethiss shook his head. “You’re free to return to duty,” he said. “We’re hoping to have something to tell you about your treatment before long.”

Aasrel smiled at her, but it was a sad smile. “Don’t worry about it, okay? Focus on your treatment.”

~ Aasrel

Bethany grinned, “I’m not worried. Everything is going to work out fine.” She stood up giving Aasrel a pointed look, “Thank you doctors.” Then she left.

Some time after mid shift Bethany was paged to the airlock. =/\=Chief. We need you down here!=/\= There was the sound of grunts and fighting. =/\=On My Way. Security team Charlie to the airlock. Emergency.=/\=

Bethany wasn’t sure what to expect when she got there. What she saw made her groan. “Hjti?”

“That pair over there has been walking around roughing up guards at the airlocks. Not sure what they are after, but they are making their way towards us.”

Bethany stood at the entrance and watched Vaec and his Naussican sidekick rough up a set of guards. Great. “Stay here, close the hatch if you have to.” She slipped out the airlock and disappeared, reappearing several ships down. “Vaec, haven’t you learned your lesson?”

The large Cardassian didn’t feel much like talking. He charged her with a roar. Bethany went flying backwards, landing in the deck plating. She didn’t get up, and it looked like she had hit her head. That caused Hjti to summon medical and Charlie team to rush out the airlock.

=/\=Emergency medical team to the airlock.=/\=

Bethany

Aasrel led the medical team that responded to the emergency. Aasrel, another doctor, and two nurses appeared by the airlock with a stretcher.

When he saw, Aasrel’s blood ran cold. Pulling out a medical scanner, he rushed to Bethany’s side and ran a scan of her, a preliminary check for injuries. “Ready the stretcher. We’re taking Lieutenant Gadi to Sickbay.” He said as he read the scan results.

~ Aasrel

Bethany’s eyes popped open. “Move!” She hissed in a whisper. Behind them there was a roar as Vaec spotted the other individual who had made him look like a fool.

The other security stopped the rest of the medical team from rushing out as there was still danger. Bethany watched as Vaec gained speed. She pushed Aasrel so he fell back to a sitting position. Her feet and hands came up as Vaec leaped toward them, and she used his momentum to push him up and past her. She rolled to her feet and turned facing the dazed and angry Cardassian. He got up. “Stay down Vaec.”

“Beth-” Aasrel started, but he was pushed back, falling into a sitting position. “Bethany, you hit your head, you need to rest.” She… wasn’t listening. The large and angry Cardassian that Aasrel probably should be scared of, but really wasn’t, demanded her attention.

She waved her hand at him. She heard him, knew he was worried, but she needed to focus.

Of course he didn’t. He charged at her again, but a few feet from her he stopped and began to convulse. It stopped suddenly. “Leave.” He took another step and she held up her hand. “See this. Keep moving and I’ll press the button again. I have no problem giving you another good shock.”

Vaec paused, looked at her hand, judged the distance to her and to the man that she was protecting. He took one sprinting step before she pressed the button and he fell to the ground, twitching and jerking like a fish out of water. After a much longer moment it stopped. Vaec had passed out. Bethany turned to look at the woman that had been with him. “Find a new boss.”

She stepped over to Aasrel, “Come on.” She looked fine, except for a cut on her shoulder and one across her forearm. She was unaware of them.

Bethany

Aasrel picked himself up off the ground and gave her a stern look. “You are going to Sickbay.” He said, “You hit your head hard enough to knock yourself out, you are going to go get a check up and then you are going to rest. In sickbay, where I can keep an eye on you.”

~ Aasrel

Bethany looked at him, both brows raising in surprise at the stern tone. “I didn’t hit my head. I know how to take a fall without getting hurt. It’s called playing opossum. Vaec is a lot bigger than me. Have to think not react.” Yes the fall knocked some of the wind out of her, but she decided not to worry him anymore. Before they made it back within earshot of everyone else, “Doc you can keep me anywhere you want, as long as you are there too.”

Bethany

“I don’t care what it’s called, it scared the living daylights out of me,” Aasrel said, dropping his voice so the others wouldn’t hear. At her comment, he grinned, “Fine, I will sit right next to you so long as you stay. Put.” As they reboarded the ship he led her towards sickbay. “I’ll just work from a PaDD or something.”

~ Aasrel

“I was hoping you would just give me a house call.” She didn’t grin though. She felt guilty, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. Why were you even out here?” She hadn’t seen anyone from medical at the airlock. She stepped back into the airlock and spoke to her team. “Once the last are back on board, close the door and keep it that way. We’ll be leaving soon anyway.”

Bethany

“Your team called a medical emergency, Bethany.” Aasrel told her. “I led the response team.” He looked at her and then paused and grabbed her arm. “You’re bleeding. You’re definitely going to Sickbay.” He decided not to make her take the stretcher, it wasn’t that bad of an injury, though it looked deep and did need treatment, and he was with her anyway. Too bad she was so bad at not exerting herself. A house call sounded great to him. But right now he wanted to get her checked out in medical.

~ Aasrel

Bethany looked down at her arm. The wound looked all too familiar and the memory made her stomach roll and her face pale. Now that she was aware it started to hurt. The perpetual grin appeared on her face. “I was going to sickbay anyway. You said so because you won’t stop worrying until you check me out. I’m not even breathing hard.”

Bethany

Aasrel walked her to Sickbay and made her lay on a biobed. He set up a dermal regenerator to work on the cut on her arm first, then used a medical scanner to scan her to check for anything else. “Of course I won’t stop worrying. What if you make yourself worse before we figure out what the treatment is?”

~ Aasrel

Scans of her arm showed a clean but deeper cut, but would also show damage from a very similar wound that happend some time in her early teens. True to her word, Bethany had not hit her head. There was no bruising or swelling, no signs of concussion or other head trauma. The knick on her shoulder was just that and had already stopped bleeding by the time they reached sickbay. There were signs of adrenaline in her system, but nothing that wouldn’t be expected. The cut had triggered an increase in her already high white blood cell count and of course platelets. The wound was dirty, most likely because the blade had not been cleaned in a long time.

Aasrel stopped the regenerator and began cleaning the wound with antiseptic. “Might sting.” He warned her as he worked.

It did sting. Actually it was more than a sting, but Bethany didn’t complain. She did her best not to wince. It had to be cleaned. She didn’t need an infection from Vaec’s blade on top of her body fighting a nonexistent infection against itself.

“I know. My job is never going to be completely without risk. Especially now. I can’t hide in my room and wrap myself in bubble wrap.” She was sure he didn’t see how much she had changed her routine. He wouldn’t know, hadn’t known her long enough.

Bethany

“Your scans are clear. There’s a small jump in white blood cells but that’s to be expected after a dirty cut like this.” Aasrel said, finishing cleaning the cut, then turning the regenerator back on. He sighed, “I know you can’t. I just wish you could stick to office work.”

~ Aasrel

Bethany laughed, but was full of bitterness and irony. “If I could just do office work, I would be out of a job. Not that I would complain about that.”

Bethany

“Just… Try to take it easy. No more angry Cardassians, maybe?” He sat in a chair next to her biobed while the regenerator worked. He still seemed upset from that morning. He’d put it aside when the emergency medical call came through, but now that he was calming down, the adrenaline wearing off, he was starting to think about it again.

~ Aasrel

“No more angry Cardassians.” She vowed. She didn’t really want to run into any of her old assignments. She was supposed to be done with this kind of work. One because of her apparent paranoia which turned out to be right. Two because Elias had compromised her covers far too many times.

She laid still, knowing he would keep her there as long as he could justify it. She glanced at him. “You’re upset. Talk to me.”

Bethany

Later today, the Andorian doctor planned to do imaging of Aasrel’s brain, locating the psilo-gland and seeing how a donation would work. It was in Aasrel’s medical file that there was a Borg implant in his brain, but upon seeing it was too deep to be easy or safe to remove, his doctors had neglected to take further imaging of it. Th’rethiss wanted to know if it would affect the procedure.

Aasrel shook his head. Bethany was already stuck enough on this donation idea and if he told her that was what he was upset about, he worried it would only make her more determined to convince Th’rethiss. “I’ll be fine, it’s okay.” He said.
