Rhee moved to a ladder and began climbing down. “Rule number one, know what situation you’re walking into. And if you can’t, then go in cautiously, use all your senses. Trust your instincts. It might save your life.” She moved down further below the second level and then pushed off the ladder, letting herself drop a great distance. She coiled her body as her feet hit the ground, absorbing the shock without any pain, and Rhee simply rose with fluid grace.

“Okay, I get it. The way I walked in, shouting, if I had been in a hostile situation I would have gotten blasted.” She crossed her arms and then said, “Well…I…I” She paused because anything she would say afterward was going to be related to a teaching moment, “I didn’t know that we were starting right when I arrived, but I know you are going to reiterate that I should have been prepared and knew what situation I was walking in. I guess everything is going to be a test and part of my training from this point on.”

Rhee simply regarded Laila with slight indifference. “I asked you to show up to an address that you didn’t know and hadn’t likely been before. I’m not out to trick you, but I’m not going to play fair because a lot of people out there won’t either. This is about taking in what you’re learning and not having to remember it, but feel it, because the motions and reactions are second-nature to you.”

Eulalia squinted her eyes and asked, “What do you mean feel it? How can you feel combat aside from being struck during battle?” She crossed her arms. Rhee didn’t make any sense. “I need to know how to make my opponent suffer if they ever try to cross me in battle. I don’t want to know how to play mind games, Rhee.”

Rhee threw her head back and laughed, then she shook her head. She tapped her head with two fingers. “Battle is a mind game, especially for you. Do you really think you’re going to overpower someone if they’re much taller and twice as heavy as you? You have to fight smart, figure out your advantage and go from there. And sometimes you’ll find yourself in a situation you can’t fight your way out of. What are you going to do then? Wave your weapon at them and shout to try and scare them?”

Eulalia thought about the situation in her mind. Really what would she do? Run! “I see,” she said intrigued. “So there is a way to trick your opponent and win a battle that way?” Her arms fell to her side. Maybe this is what her father was trying to tell her when he would quote excerpts from Sun Tzu’s book to her. “Intelligence is the key to war; without it, you cannot win.” It was one of her father’s favorite quotes. Now it started to kind of make sense. “So how do I fight smart?”

Rhee began a slow circle around Laila, studying her intently. “You tell me? What do your instincts say?” Even though they had established that Dacascos had terrible instincts for survival, Rhee at least was willing to assume that wasn’t all there was and there was actually something to work with.

If Laila was being honest with herself her initial instinct was to get the heck out of there however knowing Rhee she would probably chase her down and tackle her to the ground. “M..my instincts say I am defenseless and I need a weapon, but since I don’t have one, I need to think of a maneuver to distract the enemy so I can either make a strike to my advantage or flee to safety so I can come up with a plan to defeat them.” It was the basic battle strategies that were taught at the Academy, a discipline all officers were required to take. Thanks to Rhee, until now Laila had never really needed to reference this training.

“Right,” Rhee said. “You need to outsmart your opponent. Use others things to your advantage and create an opportunity to shift things in your favour. But what if retreat isn’t an option and you are faced with an overwhelming opponent. What do you do then?”

Laila had no idea what Rhee wanted from her, however she knew enough to try to tell her what she thought she wanted to hear based on conversations shed over heard from her father, “Um…I guess it becomes crucial to employ strategic thinking and resourcefulness to increase your chances of success.” She paused to think before she continued, “T..to do that one should probably assess the situation thoroughly. Understand the strengths and weaknesses of both yourself and your opponent. Identify any potential advantages you possess, whether it be in knowledge, skills, or available resources.” It was the classic By understanding the battlefield, you can start formulating a plan. that her father use to spew to any Starfleet officers he met.
Laila shifted on her feet as she nervously clasped her hands, even though it was repeated advice from her father who she loved and trusted more than anyone in the world, she wasn’t confident in the answer she was giving Rhee.
