“Sure. For now. You get me out in the middle of the night for eating ice cream and cake again and that mortality rate starts to creep up. You’re lucky I like you kiddo.” He gave Gadi a wink.

“Well if I had known you were going to make a house call, I would have brought you some. Next time I will just start the coffee before I leave.” She chuckled but it was tinged with more than humor. “Then again Death by sleep deprived Ryley is probably a better option than the alternatives.”

Ryley gave another crooked sort of smile. “Don’t vet in that one kiddo.” He drained his cup and rubbed his beard thoughtfully.

Hands wrapped around her mug, Shara closed her eyes and allowed herself a rare moment of reprieve in all this insanity. Yes, she had understood the high stakes of this mission would wear on all of them in different ways, but she had been unprepared to feel attached to any of them so quickly. It felt like she were playing a dangerous game, except she knew full well that the more dangerous game was the one where they didn’t trust each other. This right here, this sharing, was significant in a way maybe few others on the ship would recognize. But Calloway did. And right now their lives depended on it. She depended on it. Scary business, all of it.

When she opened her eyes, Shara sipped the coffee, grateful for a lot of things and all she could do is grin at them.
