“I’m told my bedside manner needs work and that it’s nice to make conversation.” He said.

“Hmmm....talk can be cheap, actions speak louder than words, and all that cliche stuff.” A thought occured to Bethany that actually made her face flush, but she chose not to say it. Sometimes it was best not to tease your doctor too much.

“Chains and whips?” He asked grinning as he looked around again. “Haven’t actually been to mine yet…” he added again thoughtfully.

Bethany broke into amused laughter, “I’ll do that, but only if you promise to visit, often.” Then, as if she couldn’t help herself, “Who else are you sleepin’ in sickbay with, Ryley? Should I be…” her voice dropped to a whisper, her eyes widened and she snickered a bit, “jealous?” Then she pointed at the tricorder, “So what’s it say?”

He tilted his head as he considered her. She looked flushed now too. Interesting. He gave a small chuckle. “Not a chance. Mostly it’s because i was told I had to stay there and I haven’t really bothered to venture out much more than when I met you in the corridor.” He shrugged then grinned. “Oh yeah that finished about thirty seconds ago. You’re fine.”

Her eyes went wide, obviously on purpose, and she leaned towards him again, “Are you saying I’m the best thing that’s happened to you since you came on board?” She shook her head, the corner of her mouth quirked, “You poor poor man. You need more excitement in your life. Or need to know more people.” She sighed in a breath, “I will make sure to refrain from late night desert indulgences so I don’t set off any more alarms needlessly.”

He kept his icy blue eyes locked onto hers. “You betcha, Best medical mystery I’ve come across in a while sunshine.” He winked at her. “See that you do. I’m getting told old to run around places and besides, if you’re naughty you’ll end up with more house calls, and believe me no one wants to put up with more of me when I, grumpy than they have to.”

Bethany opened her mouth, a reply rushing off her tongue and was stopped short.

He smirked. “Now, are you gonna go to bed by yourself or do you need me to tuck you in?”

Whoa…wait a minute…what? Her eyes went wide, her face flushed, and that traitorous alarm on the PaDD went off as her heart rate shot up. What ever reply she’d been thinking of was gone.

The grin widened, mischievous looking. His eyes twinkling with it. He considered her and the noise from the PaDD. His gaze flickered to the device for a second and if possible the grin widened. Fixing her with the tricorder like gaze he was known for he leaned over her slightly and still grinning said “You got a thing for me Gadi?”

Oh she was in trouble now, the good kind, mostly. This needed to stop though. Honestly, yeah she liked Ryley, probably more than she should, but people around her got hurt. She also had to wonder how long that sensor was going to be in her system. She leaned back slightly and tipped her head back to look at him - smiling, face slightly flushed. “Took ya long enough, Ryley.”

The mischief faded ever so slightly, almost imperceptibly, his eyes roved over her face. Slightly deflated maybe he said “Trust me Sunshine, you don’t want to be interested in me, it only leads to trouble for us both.”

Bethany rolled her eyes, a bit of the light leaving her too. She met his gaze without flinching, “Oh yeah, like I’m a stranger to trouble. You would be safer to stay away from me.” She almost said more, but shook her head silently instead. She stood up. Oh well, fun while it lasted.

He stood and added “Anyway your hormones are all to hell. You don’t know what you’re saying. Go to bed.” He gave her a prod with his cane towards the bed.

“My hormones may be out of whack, Doc, but I know what I’m saying.” Then her gaze turned wicked at his last words and the cane. Bethany spun, at lost faster than warranted, “You in a hurry to get me to bed, Ryley?” and grinned at him as she glanced down at the cane and then grabbed the cane away. “Now you’re stuck here,” and she winked at him.

Ryley smirked, “You’d like that wouldn’t you.” He said with a wink and without making a grab for his cane, began to walk off regardless using the wall for support.

She waggled her brows at him, just because. “As much as you like me having a thing for you.” Bethany watched him walk away using the wall and shook her head when he got to the door.

“Ryley get back over here.” She walked the paces across the room to him, cane still in hand, and set it against the wall next to him. “Come on. Through there.” She pointed toward the connecting bathroom. “Go sleep in there, the room is empty. I promise to leave you alone.”

He gave her a suspicious look. “You want me to sleep in your bathroom?” He asked and raised his eyebrows. “I mean it’s not the strangest request I ever had but don’t you think I should at least buy you a drink first or something?” He peered into the space she indicated.

“If you stay with me, Ryley, it won’t be in my bathroom. Though it’s not a bad place to start.” Bethany snickered, “All the way through.” She reached past him, grinning as the space between them disappeared for a moment, and then she stepped passed. She keyed open the opposite door. “No occupant. She’s run away with her husband.” She called for the lights. “Take your pick, but I’m under doctor’s orders to go to bed. Still debating if I should defy that order or not.”

He followed her in and made a quick mental check. Calloways quarters then? Maybe. “You know this is this first place save for the bridge and mess I’ve been apart from sickbay?” He asked as the lights came up.

Looking around he gave her another smirk. “Try it, see what happens.” He said.

“Oh....Ryley. That sounds like a dare. Was that a dare? Because I am sorely lacking in an ability to walk away from a dare.” Bethany checked one of the panels and found it empty and nodded to herself. “Well then tomorrow we can find you somewhere quiet and more comfortable than sickbay. Good night, Ryley.” She moved back toward the bathroom and glanced over her shoulder at him. “For tonight I’ll leave the door unlocked. Just in case ya get scared.”

“Bed.” He said to her and gave her another prod with the cane as he had done the last time. “You mean there’s places with more comfortable sleeping apparatus than biobeds on this tin can? Pffft. I’ll believe that when I see it.”

He found the bed and lowered himself into a sitting position on it. “I’ll let you know if I find monsters under the bed.” He said as she left then added. “Goodnight Gadi.”

This hadn’t exactly gone as expected…though what he had been expecting when he had found her quarters empty and traced her to the mess hall then decided to wait for her to come back, he wasn’t sure. Not this, his mind told him. He glanced at the connecting doorway again and pulled his boots off. Transferring the hypo in his pocket and the laser scalpel from his boot to easy reach he stretched out onto the bed, still fully clothed and put his hands behind his head. Staring at the ceiling it didn’t take him long to drift into a light sleep, his last thought was what Calloway would say if he was here when she came back in the morning. He’d blame Bethany of course.
