It was quiet in sickbay when the doors opened. The redhead still had her hair in a ponytail, face smudged a bit. She braced her left hand against the door frame. Accompanying her was the scent of smoke and of burned flesh. Staggering in a bit more, every step was a task and she was sweating by the time she made it to a spot she could sit. For the moment, she simply breathed and tried not to think about the pain in her leg. At least her wrist wasn’t that bad, though she cradled it under her breasts, trying to keep it protected.

“Doc, you around,” she called out, her voice a little shakey, a little strained.

Martel, the idiot.

There was a noise from the second room of sickbay, like a grate being pushed back into place. Ryley appeared, dressed in dark jeans and a grey sweater. A red bandana tied around his neck just visible from where it vanished into the crew neck of the sweater. He was wiping his hands on a towel. Seeing Martel he put the towel down and used his hand to brace the bad leg, limping over to her without his cane.

“The hell happened to you?” He asked quickly assessing her where she sat.

MD

“Stupidity and self-loathing,” she said. Her dark cargo pants were burned all along the right thigh, from almost to junction of her pelvis down to the medial head of her quadriceps. The fabric had caught flame and burned away, leaving nasty burns below. It was crusted and melted along the edges. There was another burn along her calf, and as he followed it down, a rectangular shaped burn in her footwear. It was like something hot had skidded against her or poured down her.

Her wrist appeared fine except it was starting to swell. And there were burns on her palms, not as bad but angry pink and. AS he moved her around she winced, hands trembling a little.

He frowned as he continued his assessment, but his touch was gentle.

“I was in the cargo bay, forging in my little makeshift workshop. When I was waiting for heats, I was doing a little training with a hanging heavy bag. And I guess I threw a punch wrong. Folded my wrist up or something from bad form. Threw another punch. Seemed okay, little off. Went back to my forge, grabbed my tongs to take out the billet and as soon as I lifted, my wrist felt like I’d been stabbed or shot. I lost control of the billet. It tumbled, hit me… went all down my leg.” She paused for a half second to swallow. “Landed on my foot. Hobbling here was fun.”

Martel

“That’s the sorta thing you can call and ask for someone to come to you for you know.” He seemed to consider. “I can do some surface repair on the burn to make it a little more comfortable but then you’re gunna have to lose the shoes and pants and move you to that bio bed for me to treat the rest properly. Then I’ll look at the wrist. Ok?”

Miranda nodded then reached down to pull the laces of her boot, then the other boot, untying them. Though for the moment she made no move to pull them off. That would be murder right now. If he could take the edge off, then she could probably do it. “That works for me. And I wasn’t going to make ya walk that far. And it really wasn’t worth a site-to-site transport. Or anybody dig out a grav sled or chair for me.” Maybe she was being dumb and tough, but the last thing she wanted to do was inconvenience anyone else.

“Next time, let me decide it’s too far to walk and save yourself some pain ok kid?”

He moved off from her then and using the various surfaces in sickbay for support. He was back within a few seconds with a few devices and a hypo. “You got any allergies or reactions to meds?” He asked.

She shook her head. “Not that I’m aware of.” The redhead lapsed into silence, head hanging a little, gaze on the floor without really seeing it.

Martel, CE

“Good, ok…here’s what’s going to happen.” He said gently. “I know it hurts so I’m going to give you Bicaridine. It’s a painkiller, it’s pretty fast acting so you may feel a bit groggy but it’ll kill the pain from the burns and your wrist. Don’t move until I help you to, without the pain to guide you, you won’t be able to tell if you’re about to do more damage. After that I’m gonna use this dermaline spray to take the edge off the burn and then we’ll move to the biobed just there.” He indicated it with his head. “I’ll let you take off the duds, it’ll hurt but shouldn’t be too bad with the painkiller. Then I’ll look at the burns properly and let you know what I’m gunna do next.”

She gave him a nod of assent and that she understood. “Sounds good.”

He pressed the hypo to her neck and depressed the dose then covered the visible burn in the dermaline from the spray.

There was the faintest sting as the blast of medication split her skin, but it was gone instantly, replaced by cold from the injected liquid. That too faded almsot immediately as it warmed immediately in her bloodstream.

“How you doing Red?” He asked as he checked the coverage of the burn.

“I’m oka–ohh…” She trailed off as the pain reliever hit her system. It was almost sexual the way it hit her nerves and brain, with the opioid analgesic rushing through her bloodstream. The rush was a good one. It suffused down into her wrist and legs and the intensity of both dropped away quite a lot. “I… wow.” Even the spray for the burn had stung but now it felt styrofoamy and gauzy with a little bit of prickling and tingling.

Her head cleared a bit though, no longer fogged from pain, though almost immediately she felt like she could drift off. Her head started to lull forward. “‘m good, doc.”

Martel, mushy engineer

There was a slight lift in the doctors tone as he spoke next as if he was amused. “Glad to hear it. Give that a second.” He put a hand on her shoulder to ensure she stayed seated as the meds worked their magic.

He picked up her undamaged wrist to check her pulse. “Feel like a trip to the bed now?” He asked.

Ryley
MD

“Anywhere you wanna take me is fine by me,” she said, the words dragging out of her. She didn’t resist or pull away when he lifted her left wrist. Her pulse was slowing, but despite that, under his fingers it was strong, though weakening some. However, she’d just come from the cargo bay, which was a short walk to get to the turbolift, and then was dumped out practically across the hall, and had to walk in there. While also very injured and in a lot of pain. But it was doing the job.

He chuckled at her response as he helped her up.

She let him help her to her feet and over to the bio bed. It was easier now, but still not fun. Getting up onto the bed was more like falling back against it sort of and half rolling onto it with a groan. But it woke her back up. “Okay. Am here.” Pushing herself to sit up, she looked at the boots still on her feet. Pulling up her left foot, she fumbled with it. Her grip was crap now. But after a minute, she managed to get it off. The effort almost made her fall off the bed, but she tightened up her core and stayed upright.

“Think we might need to cut the pants and boot off me,” she asked.

Martel

His leg burned with the combine effort of moving both of them even the short distance. While she removed her first boot he leaned against the other bed and rubbed at the area, other hand straying to the pocket of his jeans where a hypo sat. He clenched the hand into a fist to prevent him taking the hypo out. Thankfully Martel spoke distracting him.

“Ok.” He said procuring the means to do that. “Lie back, I’ll be a careful as possible.”

He examined her leg and where the burns were and very gently began cutting away at the material. The boot came off first and then the pants. Carefully he separated where burnt flesh and material Met frowning slightly as he concentrated.

Miranda watched him cut, and mourned the boots. She’d had those a long time and they were her favorite, broken-in, comfy pair. But now… One was lost forever. Mabye she could figure out a way to repair it. Then came the pants. She shifted to assist, moving as needed. She tried not to be self-conscious as she was just Donald Ducking it, save for the underwear.

Some of the fabric was stuck to her well-rounded, muscular leg. The lady didn’t skip leg day it seemed. The material was practically crusted in. Taking it off was going to make it bleed pretty good in addition to hurting like hell.

“So, you got an issue with sickbays in general or just with me?” He asked as he worked.

She took a deep breath. “I dunno–” YANK! The long strip on her quad came off with a jerk. Despite the pain meds, her world went white for a moment. Her fists pounded into the bed, and she heard a sound like glass raking on a chalk board. She could taste the electric current of licking a nine-volt battery. Her mouth opened to scream but no sound came out, but after a few moments she seemed to come back to herself, which came out in a stream of expletives through gritted teeth.

“Sorry Red.” He said though he didn’t sound sorry for the actions but rather for the fact it had hurt.

When she caught her breath, she wiped the corners of her eyes from a few leaked tears. “I dunno what you mean? I haven’t had reason to come down here. Not until today anyway.”

Martel

Meanwhile Ryley had worked to stop the bleeding and applied the dermaline to the wound again. Now he had opened a tricorder and was scanning the leg.

“Sure you haven’t. When I’m done with your leg I’ll check out your liver because if that’s true whatever’s keeping you from having the mother of all hangovers from that shine party you gals had I need to bottle it and sell.” He glanced up at her from the tricorder and then reached for a subdermal regenerator.

She let out a low groan. “It’s proprietary, classified, and I dunno what it is,” she said, covering her face with her hands. “But I wouldn’t have come in anyway. It was just a hangover. A four-alarm hangover. But still, just a hangover. Couple anti-inflammatories, some OJ, and plenty of water and I’d have been alright. I think?” She wasn’t entirely sure. But at least that was something she could have worked through or toughed out. Or maybe she was just punishing herself. “Besides, it’s not like I have anything I can pay you with, except my own ass. Or taking care of any work orders quick.” She thought about it for a moment. “Maybe install a few little upgrades around her. You drink a lot of coffee or tea?”

He listened as he worked his expression becoming quizzical as he switched the subdermal regenerator into his left hand and picked up a dermal regenerator with his right, ambidextrous It seemed. “Pay me? “ he asked

Idly she pulled her left leg up for some balance, but kept it to the side a bit to keep it out of his light as he worked.

Martel

He started to laugh. A deep hearty sound that carried into his next comment “You mean what I said in the conference room? That wasn’t serious you moron.” He shook his head. “Listen Red, you are welcome to come to get any and all medical treatment you need any time no charge.”

He placed the subdermal regenerator down and did a wide beam sweep with the dermal regenerator. This lasted a few minutes before he turned that off too, and applied some more gel to the healed skin. He checked the tricorder and walked the tips on his fingers along where the burn had been. “How’s that feel?”

“Ok let’s see the hands and then we’ll look at the wrist.” He said.
