Somehow the whole thing became highly amusing to Shara started chuckling. Then that chuckle turned into an outright laugh and her tears shifted. “Oh good Gods, look a’ us,” she said before laughing.
Lifting the nearly empty jar of shine, Shara made a toasting gesture and knocked it back. “Dere, all done. Definitely not openin’ de other jar.” And then Shara, despite all her fears and anger and highly drunk state, did something that surprised even her: she took in Bethany and Miranda and smiled. She had their back (Laila too), and they had hers.
Bethany had always had a really high tolerance for alcohol but she was really glad when the jar was empty. She was going to have a massive headache and a rebellious stomach the next day. They all needed water. She rolled her head lazily to look at the cabinet where she kept a few bottles but it seemed awfully far away to her bleary eyes.
“I ‘ave dis wi’ ma husband, buh I’ll tell ya sumtin… it sure is nice to have it here wi’ y’all as well. I used te be afraid of dyin’ alone and fergo’en, buh tis good ta know sum tings ‘ave changed.”
~Shara, Drunk CIO
Bethany grinned, goofily, at both of them. “Family..chooooo…zen,” oh boy she’d had more than she realized, “is better than blood.”
Gadi, CoS
Miranda nodded. “Yesh, yesh it is,” she said, still laying on her side. After a moment she pushed herself upright, wobbled, then leaned into the other two women. “At leasht if .. if… I’ll have fr’en’s to go out with.. With uh bang.” Straightening up again, she reached up to the chair next to her and pulled. Got halfway up… froze. Then began to laugh almost silently then louder. “Help. Can’t climb muh chair. You’re gonna have tuh pussh.”
Sloshy engineer
Shara barked a laugh and gave Miranda a bit of a push. “Don’ fall over now,” she said with a laugh. Ahhh, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d had such a time as this with people she worked with, Micah aside. A smile sat on her face and it was as much a surprise to her as it might be to others.
The small boost Shara provided was enough for Miranda to make it into a better position and find her footing.
“So, I don’ tink I’ll pull out da shine very often. It is ‘pecial stick, after all. Buh, anytime ya need an ear, I’m around. I’ve not see it all, but enough. Can’t shock me anymore. Buh… uh, well, in case I ferget to say it, danks. I mean it. I jus’ needed a bit’a time to get my head out of da mire and let da anger pass.” Calloway grinned. “T’ink we were very successful.”
~Drunk Shara
“Wel…come.” Bethany judged her gently, the side of her head dropping to Shara’s shoulder for a moment, looking suddenly very young. Bethany could remember the last time she’d done something like this and it had been too long. Which reminded her of the news she’d received right before they entered the nebula, and she was reminded cruelly it would never happen again. The perpetual smile always on her face, slipped and something much much darker and deadly appeared for a moment. She should be there with them, not here. She should be helping them find answers, mounting an extraction team. But instead she was marked as a traitor and kill on sight. How did the universe go so wrong all of a sudden? She wanted to break something, but she was too drunk to get up and do anything about it.
For a moment Shara reached an arm around Bethy’s shoulders and held her. No words were necessary. Maybe later, but not right now. With a brief squeeze, she release the younger woman.
Bethany accepted the hug but had to lock it up tight before she cracked. Words could come later, maybe, but not now, they wouldn’t stop.
She forced herself to stand, which was actually a wobbly crouch/crawl until she got to the counter and pulled herself up, like she was climbing a rope in gym class. She fumbled three bottles of water and ended up rolling two of them across the floor with a unsteady nudge of her toe. “Shhhhh…ld stay’d sittin’”
Gadi
Still clinging to the chair, using it almost like a walker she watched Gadi make her way o to the counter. “Too late.” With the bottles of water rolling her way she bent down to pick up the nearest one… and fell over. Again. Laying there for a moment she drummed her fingers against the deck, breaking out into a snicker, then sat up. She retrieved the bottles and tossed one into Calloway’s lap, then crawled over to sit next to her, back against the bulkhead. Hopefully that would stop the spinning.
“Yeah, sitting’s good. The floor is fomfy. Comfy, even.” Picking up her bottle she tried to open it. Turned it over, tried again. Got it that time, and drained half.
Miranda
Shara couldn’t help but laugh. “Kids…” she said with a shake of her head, which was a mistake. It made her head spin. Then again, normally she was more mindful of how she moved. With focused attention, she opened her water and downed a bunch. “I’ll ‘ave ya know the night ma husband and I got married we spilt a whole jar of shine ‘tween us and somehow made it downstairs an’ back in one piece. Don’t ask me how, I don’ remember,” she said, before breaking into rolling laughs.
~Shara
Bethany had opened her own bottle and was in the process of downing it, but stopped mid gulp, and swallowed hard. A grin coming across her face. “Wha???? Wait ..were ..were you twwwooo drunk an…got married???” She stumbled back over and plopped down on the floor. She has to hear this. “Spill momma.”
