There was no judgement on the greying doctors face. He ran a hand over his beard however as if it was helping him think. “How are you muddling through exactly? You trying the hippy dully routine or has someone thrown some meds at you yet or what?”

And then either inappropriately timed or giving her time to decide in an answer she wanted to give, who knew?, he got to his feet holding his empty mug. “Hold that thought, I’ll be right back.” And he limped off to get a refill.

Shara had moved her mouth to speak but then simply sipped on her coffee with a smirk.

He was back moments later and slid back into his seat, looking at her expectantly over the rim of the steaming black liquid in the mug. “Go on then.” He drank.

Her smirk remained. “I am on medication for the PTSD and it helps most of the time. I asked to have my dose increased when I was on the Manhattan because my symptoms flared then because Faye was in crisis, but I still am having the nightmares and sometimes night terrors. So I’m not sleeping as well and during this mission that…” Her expression shifted into a frown. “I don’t want to make any mistakes because I’m tired or jumpy. That will get people killed.” There was that lingering worry in the back of her head that maybe she was done with Starfleet and someone would force her to retire whether she wanted it or not. She was convinced she still had something left in her but maybe she was kidding herself. If they made it out of this alive, she was going to have to have an honest conversation with herself.

He listened and watched her intently a moment. “You want me to give you something to help you sleep?” He asked quietly eyes roving her face for some sort of reaction. “Or would some part of you prefer if this was still a starfleet vessel and we still had directives to follow that I declare you medically unfit.”he asked, genuinely interested. Treating her to another tricorder like gaze as if he were trying to work her out.

Shara shook her head. “Nah, I’ll do my job. But to do that I can’t be groggy and I can’t guarantee I’ll be in bed long enough to take sedatives, even if you could convince me to. That’s my dilemma. A sedative would be easy sure, but this crew needs me functional, and I can’t do the kind of work I’m known for if my mind is foggy. But I’m also no good if I’m sleep deprived. See my dilemma?”

He looked calculating for a moment, clearly the cogs in his head turning. “Tough dilemma, massive dilemma.” He rubbed his beard.

It could have come across as sarcasm but his words were genuine and so for a moment Shara just nodded, letting him ponder.

“I could synthesise a Theragen Derivative and give you a hypo to take at night. It’s not a sedative so to speak. More a way to relax. The compound reduces nerve inputs into the brain, resulting in a calming effect and as an added bonus there will be a reduction in emotions such as anxiety…especially stress. The upside is it’s a Non sedative effect.” He splayed his hands. “Best I can offer if you’re interested.”

In the world of medication it was a win-win. Shara blew out a breath as she contemplated possible issues. “Any interactions with my antidepressant I’d have to worry about? Or known side effects to watch for?” If there was something small she could take it could be the difference between success and failure on this mission. And failure would likely mean someone, even her, would end up dead. That could not happen. Not on her watch. Not unless it was absolutely unavoidable.

~Shara Calloway, CIO

Ryley gave a small shrug. “Not normally, I’d need to see what dosage you were on. You might find you need less of the antidepressant but again, I’d need to see your file but I don’t think so. Side effect, again no but you’d need to avoid self medication for a bit till the balance was right.” He’s praised both eyebrows pointedly.
