Bethany gave her a tight hug. “No it won’t stop you from worrying about it or others or from it gnawing your gut. Remember though, you got through it, survived and came out stronger.” She glanced around. “Ice cream or cake?”

Bethany

Miranda returned the hug just as tightly, loathe to let go. “Depends on what the purpose is. But I’m a fan of both.” Truth was, she wasn’t sure she was stronger or not. Though in some ways she felt like it. Others, perhaps not as much. Or maybe things were just different. For a moment her arms tightened, just holding on and drawing in as much strength as she could, but sending it back too.

Mira

Bethany hugged for as long as she needed. Sometimes when you were in the dark the only thing that got you through was knowing you weren’t alone. “Well I think we can manage both. When I wake up like that, it always leaves my nerves shaking and I feel like I haven’t eaten in days. So I indulge a bit: cake or ice cream, but we can do both. Come on, or would you like me to bring it here?”

Bethany

“Might as well make it a trip. I can take some of this back and feed it into the replicator for cleanup,” she said, then scooted forward. Quickly she pulled on a set of form hugging shorts and a pair of comfortable, very broken-in shoes. Immediately after she pulled her hair into a messy ponytail and then with quick, economical movements began stacking dishes onto trays. Once she had them gathered up, she picked it up and headed for the door. “Lead on. Unless you wanna ‘stay in’?”

Mira

Bethany lifted a shoulder, “Trip is good.” She didn’t really have a preference, but getting out of the dim room, torn sheets, and scent of fear would be good. She helped stack the dishes and carried a tray with her and down the corridor to the mess. It was mostly empty at this time of night. She dropped her tray at the reclimator and then headed over to the replicator. Three layer warm chocolate cake and vanilla bean ice cream for herself. “What ya want?”

Bethany

“Same but make the cake a red velvet,” she said as she fed a set of items into the replicator to be reclaimed. As she stood there, she could feel how drained she was. Normally that load of dishes would have been nothing. But by the time they got to the mess hall, it felt like carrying around an atlas stone.

Miranda rolled her shoulders and popped her neck before finding a corner for them to sit in, giving them a good view of the room, each with a back to a wall. She was more comfortable there, and suspected Bethany would be too.

Mira

Bethany carried a tray over, laden with cake, ice cream, and milk. There was advantage to sitting with your back to a wall. And most people like her preferred it, but it made it obvious you were up to something. Bethany learned a long time ago to be comfortable with sitting in the middle of a crowd. Helped you blend in, but it also confused the crap out of your enemies. She snorted softly, she learned that trick from tracking Elias.

She passed the red velvet over, picked up her own plate and fork, leaned back heel on the seat of the chair, and dug in.

Bethany

Miranda took hers with a quiet ‘thanks’ and dug in as well, starting off with some of the ice cream and let out a low, dreamy sigh. “Too bad it’s not homemade. But thi’ll do. I usually don’t indulge. At least it’s not bad for me like the real deal would be,” she mused aloud. The cake was warm, moist, velvety and still flavorful. exactly liek she wanted. While not very big into chocolate, this was one of her favorite ways to eat it.

Pausing in eating, Miranda looked around slowly, from corner to corner. There was no panic. Instead, Bethany could see the gears turning as she considered something. An idea. Then… “I wonder if I could get installing some holo emitters in here approved. Not like enough for a full holodeck. But just for general recreational purposes. Games, general image projection and the like.”

Miranda

Bethany was very particular about her desert, each bite had to have cake and ice cream. She sighed with a small grin. She followed Miranda’s gaze and nodded slowly. “That sounds like an excellent idea. There is so little to do for recreation. I don’t see why the cap would say no as long as it doesn’t drain our power resources. And I know you have a fix for that.”

Bethany

Miranda nodded. “A lot of that will come down to exactly how power is used, so i may need some help with the coding. It’s not as exciting as hacking, but it’s for a good cause. And of course Jack will be able to access it. Which reminds me. Should put a few in Engineering and on the Bridge as well. Sure we have a good medical team. Bridge and engineering should have ready access to the EMH on a ship like this. And with this being one of the most common areas this is likely to be a place where some sort of medical emergency happens. Oh, and it’s also a secondary triage area, along with the cargo bays.” She shook her head. “And of course the ENINTADI AI should be able to access and advise in those areas as well.”

“I’m happy to help if I can. As long as you can tell me what you need the program to do. Jack can probably help with that as well. If you’re thinking EMH I would suggest you talk to Ryley. He might have some ideas of where it would be most useful.”

“Maybe. But most flesh-and-blood doctors seem to hate the EMH programs. It’s like an affront to their ego or something. Or like they’re afraid they’re going to be replaced,” Miranda countered. “If he hits me with that cane of his..”

Bethany chuckled. “He hits you with that cane you won’t know it till you wake up on a biobed later. I got a nice exhibition of their skills. Priceless diamonds, those two. If they don’t kill each other first.”

“They who? The EMH and Ryley?”

“I think I may submit some updated specs for retrofit.” After a moment, she sighed. “Sorry, I can’t seem to turn that off. Always looking for improvement. And ideally each improvement being multi-faceted, multi-purpose.”

Miranda

Bethany took her bite off the fork, “Mmmm,” and then waved her fork at Miranda. She took a gulp of the ice cold milk. “Don’t apologize. I can’t really turn it off either. I think it’s a good idea, you should def submit it.”

Bethany

Miranda nodded and sheered off a little bit of ice cream and a little bit of the cake plopping the combination into her mouth and gave a low sound of approval. “Find yourself watching people’s hands a lot, and looking for concealed weapons?”

Mira

“Naw, everyone has weapons, it’s a given. People who don’t belong, people who see too much, people who fit in too well, people who fit in so well their covert work is out in the open and you don’t notice. Escape routes, contingencies, easiest way to hack the computer system.” Bethany shrugged as she listed them off.

Bethany

Miranda nodded. Most of the time she had at least two knives on her and a pocket phaser these days. That wasn’t the point of watching people’s hands though. It was to see what they reached for. And well, if they swiped something, put something in someone’s food or drink. Accessed a computer, and more. Of course, not everyone needed to use their hands to do it. One of the little things she had worked into the cybernetics, was of course heads up displays and linking into the ship’s systems. She could monitor everything she had access to from it, and perform a lot of basic functions. It also gave her light amplification and thermal imaging as well. And cousle be tie dinto the feed of a tricorder.

For the time being she simply ate her cake and ice cream in silence, listening to the thrum of the engines. Night shift was always so quiet.
