Shara was quiet, sipping on some more rum as she chose her words carefully. “All we can do is our best. And this mission of ours is personal for me. I’ve got more of a stake in it, and at the same time a lot is out of my hands. But Strickland is confident that if we all do our jobs, he can get in and get out and be successful at doing that thing that takes them down. Will it be a final blow? I dunno. But here’s the thing Bethy… Agent Blue isn’t just some Intelligence officer who got abducted and they decided to toss back into the fray. He was my daughter’s handler. Someone she trusted with her life, consider like a brother. My daughter does not give over her trust easily, so all I can do is trust her about this man that is leading this whole thing. He’s determined to finish what they started. And though he pisses me off to no end some days, Micah is worthy of our trust too. I don’t have to be involved with him to know that. He rescued Strickland out of that hellhole. It’s hard for us, but we’re going to have to trust them, more than we’re inclined to. What else can we do?”

Bethy lifted the glass and pointed at Shara, “Nothing. Because anything less and we’d regret it forever.” Then she shrugged her perpetual grin coming back to her face. “But man it’s going to be a fiasco either way. Too many people, too many moving parts, and no plan sticks to the plan. Should make for good stories around the campfire.”

Lifting her glass, Shara tapped her lightly against Bethany’s. “Here’s to the fray. May we come out not too singed.” It was the reality of the situation that there were costs to be accounted for, but the who and the what remained to be seen.

Bethany listened to the chime of the glass as it clinked, “To the fray.” Whatever else may come, Bethany was grateful to have met Shara. There were few people she would call a friend and say she could look up to, she counted Calloway among that small number.
