After settling in her room, Eulailia headed to sickbay for her medical evaluation. Her mother used to make sure she went to see the family doctor regularly from the time she was an infant all the way through till she left to join the Academy. She was ashamed that she had not prioritized her health and reported regularly for her last few medical evaluations. Starting to feel nervous, she was sure that some of the standard required immunizations were overdue. Her mother would have a fit if she knew and the thought of having to get multiple hypospray injections made her feel dizzy. Thinking about all this, she had to stop and steady herself using the wall. “Jeez,” she hissed to herself, “after all these years you’d think I’d be used to it.” Taking a couple of breaths, she threw her waist-length black braids over her shoulder and said to herself, “I am used to it. Just having an unnecessary panic attack because I missed one…two…probably four medical evaluations. At most I will need four injections and there is no way anyone will let my mother know I have missed my medical evaluations because I am an adult and I have a right to privacy.”
Her lips stretched into a relieved grin, then she started walking fast toward sickbay. When she reached the door, she said to herself, “Alright, let’s get this done and over with.”, and walked in.Decascos, COO
Sickbay was empty. Save for a man with long hair tied back in a pony tail and beard. He was lounging on a bio bed in dark jeans and a grey woollen jumper reading a PaDD. He glanced up at the doorway as it opened and rolled his eyes before returning to his PaDD. “Are you near death or bleeding profusely?” He asked
Ryley
MDEulailia walked over and stood by the bio bed, “Before I answer your question, I would like to know who I am talking to.”
Decascos, COO
The man grinned. “Then the answer to both questions is no.” He looked up from his PaDD, “If you were you wouldn’t be stopping to ask who I was you’d be asking for help.” He smiled and gave Eulailia a quick evaluative glance from head to toe and back again, tricorder like.
“Alex Ryley, for now chief sawbones, at least till I die or they find someone better to replace me.” He sat up still looking at her, his head tilted to one side, “Does sickbay make you anxious?”
Ryley
MDShe thought to herself, “I hope the other department heads offer a better greeting.”
However, she was impressed by his initial assessment of her. Reading people was her thing, she had yet to meet another person who could do it as well as she did, and she knew he was good because she made an attempt to hide her anxiety before she walked through the door and that was another thing she was good at. She also thought it was unusual his rank was “Captain” but here he is a mere CMO on the Asimov. She crossed her arms, cleared her throat, and said to the man, “Captain or Doctor Ryley, respectfully sir, I am not going to call you chief sawbones, okay?” Then she rolled her eyes, “Yes, I am nervous but not for the reasons you think. She looked around and asked, “Where is the rest of your staff, or a better question is why are you not commanding your own ship?”
Dacascos, COO
“Just Ryley kid, Doctor Ryley if you insist on using a title.” He sat up properly now and followed her look around. “Observant aren’t you? I don’t think any reason, I can assume it’s either a standard you don’t like sickbay or you have a thing about doctors, but that’s plain boring and if it were that you’d have said so.”
He eased himself off of the biobed, gripping the thigh of his bad leg with his hand as he settled his weight onto the floor. As he did he continued. “There’s two medical staff left, three including me. But I didn’t start out here I kinda got lumped in when they found me, they aren’t on duty right now. A how’d you get the rank thing?” He asked looking genuinely interested. He patted the biobed. “Hop up.”
Ryley
MDIt didn’t feel right to Eilailia to call him just Ryley, being in a family that has served Star-Fleet and the Federation from before she was born. “Okay, Ry…Doc…I mean Ryle. Um....sir.” It just didn’t sound right. “I am sure you are aware information on the ship’s personnel is open and free information. I wanted to see who I was working with, the names at least. I noticed the ship has two members that ranked Captain, but one was the CMO. I was sure you did something terrible like let your entire crew die or destroy a whole ship whatever and was banished to work in the capacity of a department head, but neither of those is true is it? You would have surely lost your rank and you certainly wouldn’t be the CMO, so what’s your story?” She searched the room for hypospray pens as she talked.
Dacascos, COO
Ryley watched her quietly a moment. “Didn’t have a ship. Didn’t want one. They slapped the rank on me and despite trying to get myself demoted and kept there they kept promoting me again.” He shrugged “I was head of Diagnostics at starfleet medical for a while. Not everyone who hit the rank commands a ship and I happen to like the medicine.”
He smirked at the last comment and patted the bed he had just vacated again. “Like I said, hop on up.”
Ryley
MDShe finally hopped on the biobed. “Just so you know. I missed a few evaluations but I am in perfect health. So I am guessing you will do a quick lookover and I am out of here?”
Dacascos, COO
“Fine by me.” Ryley said with a shrug. “I don’t care if you’ve missed some, I don’t trust other doctors evaluations anyway so I’d have discounted them regardless. And no. You’ll stay here till I’ve examined you and decided you’re good to go.” He pulled a heavily modified looking tricorder out of his jeans pocket and gave a grin.
“Lie back, take some deep breaths. If you’re good I’ll give you a lollipop.”
Ryley
MDShe frowned at the tricorder, “What the heck did you do to the tricorder? Even if there is nothing wrong with me it’s going to find something!” She laid back and took a few deep breaths. “I am going to hold you to that lollipop. I want a lemon one. If you hypospray me then I should get two.” She paused and said, “Doctor, I should mention that hypospray injections make me dizzy. I start to see stars and I get a vertigo-like sensation. Is that normal? I think my body has created some type of aversion to them but it could all be in my head. I didn’t want to tell you because I was afraid you would not clear me for duty.”
Dacascos, COO
Ryley smirked. “That’s kinda the point.” He turned the device over in his hand. “It’s not finished yet but it’s already proving to be even more sensitive than my previous adapted one. It was getting on in years so I guess that’s to be expected.” He removed the hand held part and began scanning as she took the deep breaths he had requested.
“Hypospray phobias aren’t uncommon. Interesting you think I wouldn’t clear you for duty as a result of it. Do you intend to be brandishing hypos around the place? I mean if so I probably wouldn’t clear you for duty anyway regardless of the danger of you passing out when you have one. Or…is it a case you’re scared I wouldn’t clear you because you’re behind on your shots? In which case you get one lollipop for being naughty and avoidance behaviour.” He said as he scanned.
Ooc: scan results please?
Ryley
MD
Eulailia laughed at the “brandishing hypos around the place” comment. Then when she got her breath she said, “Honestly doctor I may be behind on my shots, I haven’t been as responsible as I should have and I may have missed a few medical evaluations. I am just glad my mother doesn’t know. She’d never let it go. You know, she didn’t want me to join Starfleet and when she realized she couldn’t stop me, she made me promise that I would be responsible take care of myself, get all my medical evaluations, and call her if anything happened.” She mocked her mother’s voice in the last few phases. She smiled a little then said, “My daddy believes in me. He said I was going to be fine and told me to just remember to be consistent and work hard.”
All of her scans showed normal results. She didn’t need any hypospray injections after all.
