“No infection…that’s just weird.” He said frowning as if the readouts were displeasure personified. “Huh…” he pulled his bottom lip and turned to look at the blood readouts as they processed. “Infection made sense…you’re hormone levels are high…and the white blood cell count is high but the infection markers are absent.”

Bethany didn’t quite suppress a sigh, “So there’s nothing wrong with me and you’re gonna send me home, right?”

Ryley paused in his musings and gave Bethany a look as if he thought she was insane. “Are you kidding? There’s obviously something going wrong with you. You have an idiopathic heart rate issue, a fever, all of the hall marks of infection and no infection. I don’t like idiopathic things and I don’t dismiss symptoms because I don’t have a diagnosis. That’s what differential diagnostics is for. Any idiot can see somethings wrong…the question is what is it.” He looked ponderous again.

“What looks like an infection, sounds like an infection but isn’t an infection…” he said.

Bethany shrugged, “A duck?” She shifted on the biobed, getting restless, her heart still racing and the longer she forced her self to stay still the worse the need to get up and move got. She wasn’t sure if it was really getting worse physically or just a mental thing. She folded one arm behind her head and the other rubbed across her forehead, her head was starting to throb.

Her movement distracted Ryley from his pensive state. “Does your head hurt?” He asked and standing opened the medical tricorder to scan her head and neck.

“Yes, it’s throbbing.” Bethany tipped her head from side to side trying to stretch her neck, and relieve the tight muscles there. “And my neck and shoulders hurt, but pretty sure that’s from tension.” Then again…her sleeplessness and fatigue weren’t. She had an infection that wasn’t an infection.

Without a word Ryley produced another hypo which he pressed against her neck. “This should help. I’m not going to lie this isn’t going to be wave a magic tricorder over it and it’ll go away sort of thing. But I do believe you, I’m going to need to do some research and get back to you.” He said.

Bethany nodded, “So does that mean you’re done with me for now, or to get out while you work?” Then Bethany asked something she never thought she would. “Hey, Ryley, would a sleep aid, really mess me up? I’m exhausted.”
