Calloway shrugged and lifted her injured right hand. “Depends on which story you believe. Could have gotten into fight with a stupid kid who didn’t know his place, or maybe I was training and overdid it.” Either way, it was quite possible she had fractured her knuckles and that whatever her fist had collided with hadn’t been so forgiving. That and she had to have hit with a great deal of force.

Ryley seemed to consider this a moment longer before he pushed himself up fully and pulling his covers aside eased himself off of the biobed, the weight on his good leg. His hand automatically went for a cane that wasn’t there, instead he gripped the area over the thigh with his hand as if it offered some slight support and barefoot limped towards her.

As he stood in front of her on the biobed he motioned for her hand. “I’m unlikely to believe anything that comes out of your mouth, patients lie it’s the law of the universe. Those with Intel training tend to lie more that’s the law of secret keeping.”

Shara chuckled, a deep throaty sound full of knowing and amusement. “Oh hunny, you have no idea just how true that is. Except when it’s not.”

She studied him again. “Alexander Jay Ryley, rank Captain, much to your chagrin and many people’s dismay. Notable doctor, considered brilliant but rarely a team player”-she leaned in towards him-“my kind of person”-and leaned back-“but it’s cost you more times than is necessary to mention. And yet no one can deny that you’re brilliant. It reminds me of my daughter actually, whose brain you were very intimately acquainted with several years ago. Later, I owe you a drink for that.”
