“Commander,” Paddy said rising slowly, “It woul be my pleasure,” he extended a hand.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethany took his extended hand as a gesture to proceed him. She walked towards the doors and out of the mess, slowing her pace for him to come even with her as she turned left and then unto the turbolift and down to deck 7. “Not much to see on a ship with only 7 decks, but it let’s us stretch our legs a bit.” And of course without even trying, Bethy was aware of patrols, who was where and what they were doing, the feel of the ship and speed it was going. All information her senses collected and filed for when it was needed. “What about you, Paddy? What’s something you’ve carried from your childhood into your career?”

Paddy retracted his hand, She really is nervous about commitment. Answering her question, he added, “Aside from being a rather weak pianist, not much of note really. What about yourself?”

“Ah but do you enjoy the piano? That is what is important.” Bethy considered the question and shrugged. “I have a few items in my parents home that are significant, but I can’t take them with me. Mostly I brought the wisdom of my uncles’ phrased tidbits with me. And a love for the peace of a walk after a good meal.”

‘I use to when I was a lad,’ Paddy replied thoughtfully, ‘Maybe I should get back into it? So, what sort of phrased tidbits would they be?’

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“You should always make time, even a small amount, for the things you enjoy. If you enjoy piano then do something about it.” Bethy thought for a moment. What were her favorite sayings? The ones that really stuck with her? “‘You can’t move mountains by whispering at them’ (Pink). ‘Not how long but how well you have lived is the main thing’ (Seneca). ‘It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves’ (Edmund Hillary). ‘Fill you life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.’ (Unknown)”

Paddy chuckled lightheartedly, “I feel as if I should be taking notes, your Uncle seems like an incredibly wise man.”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethy laughed. “Uncles. Three of them, my mother’s brothers. They take great pride in passing down what they call ‘the old mountain wisdom.’ Live simpler, live slower. Michevious old men too. They take everything in stride until there is a joke to pull.”

“Reminds me of me da,” Paddy grinned, “We were really close, we’d often sing together during the time we were working on the farm.”

As they finished a lap of deck 7 they cam back to the turbolift and Bethy pressed the call button and they took the lift to deck 6. “What did you sing?”

“Normally old Irish folk music, ‘O Danny Boy’ and the like.” Paddy began silently whistling the melody, just loud enough for Gadi to hear.
