“Synthetic caffeine,” Paddy said, grinning and tapping the mug with his index finger, “Gives you the buzz, without the sleepless nights, came in handy during my Academy days during the sometimes four hour long psych exam finals I had to take.”-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
“Oh I remember nights like that, weeks like that actually. I also remember the end of exams…and sleeping through the parties I was so mentally and physically exhausted. My roommate was always shocked I could sleep through the noise.” She couldn’t anymore. Life and duty changed that. Lite sleeper didn’t begin to cover how easily Bethany got woken up.

“Really?” Paddy said with a quizzical glance, “I thought you’d be the life of the party?”
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
Bethy shrugged with a small smile. “I can be if it’s required or the rare occasion the mood strikes me. But after exams all I wanted, after two weeks of all night study sessions and hours long exams, was sleep.” Bethany was at heart a sit back and watch the party rather than be in it kind of person.

“People watching was always my scene,” Paddy grinned, offering a glance at the many Starfleet officers around them, “A mess hall is a brilliant place for that sort of thing, you never know what you might overhear.”
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
Bethany raised the glass to her lips and drank. She had to wonder if he was teasing her. Things over heard when people were comfortable and sure of their own safety and security were the cornerstone of the work she did. “It’s amazing what you will hear when you are still and simply in the moment.”
Gadi, CoS
“Personally,” Paddy began, his confidence rising, “I’d prefer if this moment didn’t end.”
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
“Ah but moments do end, though it’s nice to think otherwise.” It was a romantic notion, but the meaning conveyed made her smile slightly. “I would rather live each moment to its fullest, complete each one. Rather than leave it wondering how it might have ended because each is unique and will never repeat.”
Gadi CoS
“In that case,” Paddy saidd with a warm grin, “I look forward to living through many a moment together.”
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
“Back home we always took a walk after we ate, through town, along the stream, through the woods, it didn’t matter where. Those are some of my fondest moments.” Bethany took a long drink of her water and then set the glass down, nothing left but the ice. “It’s a routine I’ve never been able to break.” Then she stood up. “Do you want to walk with me, Paddy?”
Gadi, CoS
“Commander,” Paddy said rising slowly, “It woul be my pleasure,” he extended a hand.
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
Bethany took his extended hand as a gesture to proceed him. She walked towards the doors and out of the mess, slowing her pace for him to come even with her as she turned left and then unto the turbolift and down to deck 7. “Not much to see on a ship with only 7 decks, but it let’s us stretch our legs a bit.” And of course without even trying, Bethy was aware of patrols, who was where and what they were doing, the feel of the ship and speed it was going. All information her senses collected and filed for when it was needed. “What about you, Paddy? What’s something you’ve carried from your childhood into your career?”
Gadi, CoS
Paddy retracted his hand, She really is nervous about commitment. Answering her question, he added, “Aside from being a rather weak pianist, not much of note really. What about yourself?”
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
“Ah but do you enjoy the piano? That is what is important.” Bethy considered the question and shrugged. “I have a few items in my parents home that are significant, but I can’t take them with me. Mostly I brought the wisdom of my uncles’ phrased tidbits with me. And a love for the peace of a walk after a good meal.”
Gadi, CoS
‘I use to when I was a lad,’ Paddy replied thoughtfully, ‘Maybe I should get back into it? So, what sort of phrased tidbits would they be?’
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
“You should always make time, even a small amount, for the things you enjoy. If you enjoy piano then do something about it.” Bethy thought for a moment. What were her favorite sayings? The ones that really stuck with her? “‘You can’t move mountains by whispering at them’ (Pink). ‘Not how long but how well you have lived is the main thing’ (Seneca). ‘It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves’ (Edmund Hillary). ‘Fill you life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.’ (Unknown)”
Gadi, CoS
Paddy chuckled lightheartedly, “I feel as if I should be taking notes, your Uncle seems like an incredibly wise man.”
-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-
Bethy laughed. “Uncles. Three of them, my mother’s brothers. They take great pride in passing down what they call ‘the old mountain wisdom.’ Live simpler, live slower. Michevious old men too. They take everything in stride until there is a joke to pull.”
Gadi, CoS
“Reminds me of me da,” Paddy grinned, “We were really close, we’d often sing together during the time we were working on the farm.”
