Siadra returned the smile and replied, “Thank you, S- Agent Pikelsimer. Sticking your nose into a hornet’s nest doesn’t make this your fault. Not really. It wasn’t you who created the hornet’s nest after all.” Rising to her feet, she walked over to the window and rested her forehead against it. For a few moments she looked silently out into the vastness of space in front of them before she finally said, “I can’t abandon this crew or my duties. And I can’t send my daughter away knowing she will either believe I died or abandoned her.” She turned around and looked at everyone in the room. “Most of you have much more experience with these type of missions. So if there is anything you can do, any suggestions you may have that will help me keep her and any other civilians along with the rest of the crew save: I’d be forever grateful.”

Blue nodded and said “Please note, Commander… Agent Pikelsimer and myself spent weeks formulating these covers.” He looked at Shara. “The ones who are changing ID fully ha e backgrounds that compliment their actual history… a grain of truth in the web of decit, as it were. That should help them assume the role more natuarally.”

Blue

Siadra nodded slightly, hoping either of the two men would tell them more about what those covers were going to be.

“Well then, by all means, dispense with the bulls#!t and tell us what marvellous things you’ve concocted for the people in this room so I have a place to start working from,” Shara said, doing what she did best: compartmentalizing her feelings and shoving down the discomfort somewhere where it wouldn’t get her and others killed. It was ugly business but effective and right now they needed her focused and effective.

Commander Calloway, CIO

Blue shook his head. “Not now. When we reach Catraken Station. Then we let the crew decide whether they are staying or going… then we get into it. The one advantage we have is that we have no timeframe to be at the station… we stay until we are ready.”

GM

Shara all but glared. “No, you’re not hearing me. I need to know. Now. Myself, Gadi, and our command team need to know before then so we can already be a few steps ahead in order to help the crew. I’m going to have to get eighty people ready for a covert mission and nearly all of them have never done anything like this. So I need to know what you’ve decided I am supposed to be in all of this. And I’m not asking.”

Commander Calloway, CIO

Micah looked at her and took a breath. “And I ain’t telling because it ain’t your call. You aren’t in charge here, neither is Intel. And until we get in that nebula and comms are scrambled so bad nothing gets out, we ain’t saying shit. Get pissed, but that’s the way it is. No specifics till we know no one on this ship has the opportunity to get anything to the target organization. No one. No exceptions. Hell, me and Blue just broke a dozen direct orders with this little meeting.” and he leaned forward and stabbed a metal finger at the table.

“You of all people know the level we’ve been compromised. And if you can know that and still have the stones to sit there and demand we give up mission specifics now? When we still aren’t sure who we are dealing with? Them’s some grade-a blinders you got on, hun. Yeah… not f%$#ing happening. This meeting is done. Captain? A word if you please.”

Pikelsimer

Screw you, Shara thought and abruptly pushed back her chair and stormed out the of the room without another word. Her stomach continued to roil and every promise she had recently made was sitting in her mind. This was not what she signed up for. Not by a long shot. Damn them all to Hell!

Shara moved out of the room and into the corridor uncaring about appearances.

Commander Calloway, CIO

Sara had so far sat quietly, taking in information. Her fingers steepled before her face. “Asimov crew, you’re dismissed. Commander Enai, please put your counseling training to work with Commander Calloway.”

A look of deep concern had appeared on Siadra’s face during the argument between Shara and Micah. A concern that had only intensified when the other woman had stormed out of the room. So she gave the Captain and the two men simply a curt nod before hurrying out of the conference room herself; hoping she’d be able to catch up with Shara.

After everyone had filtered out, Sara said. “So. Agent. How can I help you?”

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

Blue waited till everyone was gone but him, Pikelsimer, and the Captain. He then looked at the Captain and said “Captain. We know this isn’t ideal, but it’s what we have. But Agent Pikelsimer and I discussed it and we want you to be aware of what this mission means for you. It is integral that you stay on and in charge. But that means your name is going to be dragged through the mud and you are going to be called everything but late for dinner. You are going to be used as the bad example of what an officer should be. You and your family are going to be outcasts and vilified for the duration of this mission… which we don’t know how long that will be. So… are you willing to throw everything you built away; at least temporarily?”

GM

Sara rose and walked to the window. “Becoming the Captain of my own ship took time and a great deal of work building a service record and reputation. I will do what is necessary to see this mission through to the absolute best of my ability. I would like it clearly understood that you will fix it, or at least insure that I don’t lose the ship forever. I’ll take the hit. It’s my responsibility as an officer. I understand my family may be treated as pariahs and that is unfortunate but unavoidable.” She sighed. “I’m trusting you that this is strictly necessary. That being the case, I’ll keep my oath as an officer and a Captain to serve the Federation.”
