Calloway nodded. “It is,” she said with a nod. “But it’s also an illusion. I mean, don’t get me wrong, that feeling? Few things beat it, but I’ve learned the hard way that the tangible thing that makes home feel like home is you. It’s the people. And people can fight me on this, but I’ve had many homes, Allison and they were only home because I decided they were. If a place don’t feel right? Not home. But the common denominator is still you. And I’ve lived on a lot of places enough to know that that sensation changes as we as people do.”

Allison gave a quiet laugh. “I was just thinking how this ship is home for me because I’m here with my children and my husband. I don’t think I’d be able to feel at home without these two being near, at least right now.” Sophie giggled, hearing her mom laugh, and Kasper quickly caught on to the cheerfulness and began to babble, waving his arms about for a few moments before yawning.

Shara gazed at Kasper and for a brief moment could remember vividly holding Faye in her lap at one if Tracken’s weekly get-togethers, her face turned up in fascination at the lights strung from the pergola. The sound of music and laughter, the feeling camaraderie and family. Home. She was still trying to find that, and she’d seen recent evidence it was possible because Faye had found it on the Manhattan, but it had been decades since she had truly experience it for herself. But she wanted to, that was the difference.

“I’m beginning to tire, and I think the twins are as well. I might take them back to our quarters for a nap…”

Calloway gave a warm smile and stood up with Kasper. “Of course. Get all the rest you can. And like I said, if you need someone to watch them, barring the ship being at alert, I should be able to help you out,” she said as she held the babe, waiting for Allison to be ready to to put him in the carrier.

Allison carefully tied Sophie up in the back-carrier, then took Kasper and attached him to her front, giving the babe a little kiss on the forehead. “Thanks for holding him for a while, it’s good for them to be exposed to new faces,” she spoke with a soft, tired smile. “I really appreciate the offer, and you bet I’ll take the opportunity to take you up on that, when I need to!”

“Good,” Shara said with a nod. She reached out and tickled Kasper’s cheek with her finger. “And you two be good for your mom, you hear?” she said in mock-firmness.
