Micah nodded and smiled. “So if ya don’t mind me askin’… what happened with the marriage? I mean, I guess technically I’m kinda your step-dad.... need to know if I gotta go break somebody’s leg or sumthin’.” and he gave her a wink and took a bite of the burger after a drink of the malt. He glanced at the malt glass and gave it a look that said Daaaaaammmmmmn. Thats good!

Micah

She picked up an onion ring and set it back down, her mood suddenly sombre. “I put off getting married and having kids for a little while and then after I married Daewon and we tried for kids it took us a little long to conceive and needed assistance. and it definitely put a strain on the relationship. But then we had Joshua.” She picked up another onion ring and set it back down. “We lost Josh five years ago. Aircar accident. Some couples can weather the loss of a child, but our had already been strained. We could barely be in the same room. Our cumulative grief just… sank us. We divorced after a year and I moved out here.”

Micah looked at her and nodded slowly. “I figured it was somethin’ like that. I’m sorry… about your boy. I can’t imagine…” and he shook his head. After a moment he said “Well… you have someone now who knows loss like that. Maybe you both can help ease some of that in each other. But now…” and he grinned and reached over and squeezed her hand and changed the subject, “… now you get to go meet your mom. After we pick up a piano. Don’t let me forget the piano. She will literally kill me if we forget the piano. Come on, get this packed up to go. You need ta pack.” and he waved Leisha over and said “All ‘a this to go, please. And is there a way you can freeze me one… no… five of those chocolate malts? I need to bring one back for the wife. Make it five of each flavor. I’ll need a big box.” and he grinned.

Micah

Nadine squeezed his hand back, feeling at ease with this man who was related to her, even if by marriage. He was family.

Leisha looked momentarily astonished at the request and then smirked. “I’ll see what we can whip up.”

“My non-negotiable term to all this is that while I’m packing I’m calling my parents. You can listen to the conversation if you want but I’m going to tell them the truth, that I found my mother after all these years and I’m going away for a couple days to meet her and I’ll call them after I get back to let them know how it went. If they ask where I’m going, I’ll just tell them across the country, but nothing specific. Is that doable?” Nadine said.

Micah looked at her for a long moment and then said “Tell them you found your mom, fine. No details, no names. The rest, well, no… but you’ll understand soon, I promise. Tell them you are going to San Francisco for a few days, and you are going to meet her there.” He pulled up the PaDD again and tapped in a few commands. “You’ll be staying at the Brixton Hotel in Downtown San Francisco, and you’ll call when you get checked in and you’ll call every day to let them know you are ok. Alright?” He looked up at her and said “I’ll be honest with ya. The lives you are about to enter are complicated and dangerous. This ain’t a show to impress you… this is our lives. Finding you, meeting you, bringing you to her… it’s a really big deal. And it puts a level of exposure on her… on all of us… that makes what we do that much more dangerous. But…” and he took her hand again, “… doing it is worth it. To bring you two together? Definitely worth it. She has carried a hole in her heart for almost fifty years. She… and you… deserve to have that hole filled up. But doing that is not as easy as ‘Hey I found my mom and I’m going to see her everybody?’. It means taking precautions that to you may seem scary and absurd, but are part and parcel of who we are and what we do.” He squeezed her hand again and then let go. “Like I said… you’ll understand once all of us sit down and talk somewhere… private.” And a look of realization came across his face. “Emergency transporter beacon! Sure! So what I’ll do is before we take off, you can make a video comm with your folks. I’ll give ya an emergency transporter beacon and a lock-in code. You give that to your folks, and if they ever think you’re in trouble, they can call the authorities, give ‘em the beacon code, and then poof you are back at the police station. How’s that? Rich folks do that for their kids all the time. No different.” and he slid out of the booth and stood up.

Earlier, when Shara had been on the call there was an easy banter that seemed to ease the seriousness of the words spoken. But suddenly, she was scared- no two ways about it. He said he was with Federation Security, but to be honest she didn’t know what that meant. And even if she was right about Shara being in Starfleet, that didn’t tell her much either. “Uh, okay,” Nadine said, more than a little bewildered. So far she had taken things pretty well, if she did say so herself, but now the overwhelm was starting to set in. She suddenly felt like she had just found out these people with with an old-time mob and she was being quietly inducted. Except she trusted Micah, didn’t she?

Leisha came out of the kitchen and said “We flash froze the malts and bagged up the rest, but you’ll need to get ‘em in the freezer in an hour or so if ya don’t want ‘em to melt.” as she sat a disposable freeze-pak box on the table. Micah grinned happily and said “Perfect.” and he gave her a quick peck on the cheek and a wink. “Goddess… that’s what ya are. A veritable Goddess among women.” He took the tab, gave her a healthy tip, and smiled as she walked away. He then looked at Nadine.

“Last chance to back out, kiddo. But I promise ya… it’ll be a hell of an adventure.” and he scooped up the box and offered her his metal arm.

Micah

She had noticed the arm, of course, but like anyone brought up with manners, Nadine hadn’t brought it up. For a moment she hesitated, but not because of the limb. Could she do this? But could she live with herself if she didn’t? And the answer was likely not, and that answer was the one that truly mattered. “You’re really freaking me out, jut so you know. But… I have to do this. This might be my only chance and I can’t walk away from that. So, yeah’s let’s go.”
