“I can understand that. I keep waiting to be contacted with details of my next assignment. But if you want gadgets…I’ve got gadgets.” Bethany waled over to a corner bulkhead placed her palm to it and there was a snuck and the panel opened. “I always keep extras. You’re welcome to your pick. First rule of computers, have a back up.”

“Faaantastic!” Shara said with a gleam in her eyes. “See, I knew we’d get along great. I also don’t mind having some contingency plans that we keep on the down-low and share with the others only as needed. Our mission profile means we’re likely to get into a scrape or two more often than not, so I say we create ourselves some solutions to problems ahead of time. That way our execution under pressure will be flawless.”

“I’d have more but my shuttle had to return to whence it came. And I am ALL for contingency plans. I think first is a means of communication. I’ll work on finalizing that Morse code program and then we can try it out. See how well it works. If we have to use covert plans it’s all for naught if we have to announce it over the comm system.” Bethany hadn’t missed Calloway saying she was on Voyager. T’Jal, Jake, F’actar had all been on Voyager for a very short period when their ship had been sent to the Delta to make contact with Voyager. She didn’t know if Calloway was familiar enough with the crew of the Dresden/Mako but if she had worked with them, she would recognize special tweaks F’actar had made to the equipment.

Shara nodded. “I’m good with that. And if you don’t mind, I’d actually like to do some training with your team. It’s a small vessel and while I’ve got the spec memorized, nothing helps you get knowing the nooks and crannies like drills. And that way they ca get used to us spooks being on the ship and seeing that we’re not all that scary… unless we want to,” she said with a sly grin.

Bethany laughed, “Oh yeah we’re gonna get along just fine. And I would love to have you join us. Right now I’m runnin’ basic drills: phasers, hand to hand, and patrols. Changing up the patrol groups and shifts. Captain said they are all a bit uneasy after the last mission so I want them to get to know each other. But if you want to sneak around on them, see who’s paying attention and who’s complacent, I’d appreciate another set of eyes. Maybe turn it into a point system…leave some surprises around for them to find.”

“Oh! I like the way you think. I think I can manage that,” she said, grinning like a kid whose parents just told them they could stay up late. Pressing her palms together she tapped her fingers together. “Surprises I can do. Insert evil laugh… now.” Shara chuckled.

“Alright, I’ve used up enough of your time. Let me know when the next drill rotation was and I’ll go… wander. Sound good?”

“Sounds good. I’ve called a department meeting for this afternoon and new rotations start Alpha shift tomorrow. And I’ll let you know when I’ve got my equipment set up so we can make sure it doesn’t mess with your work. Thank you Cmdr.” It was a loaded statement, both professional and for Bethany personally. The last regular duty assignment she’d taken had been a nightmare.

For a moment Shara regarded her with a intense look before it softened. “You know, previous lone wolf status aside, I’m community oriented. I believe in it because it believed in me. And it’s risky to walk into a place and keep that honesty, keep that mentality, but take it from someone who’s been at this just that little bit longer than you that it’s worth the risk. Even when I was on assignment and pretended to be someone else, I still made myself a part of the community, even just in tiny ways. Recently I realized that I was wrong. I used to think I left no marks. I didn’t exist. Sure, maybe I’m still getting used to being Shara Calloway again, but I still left marks. I just don’t get to know what they were. Leave marks, Gadi. I promise it’ll be okay if you do,” she said with a wink and then rose to her feet.

Bethany nodded, “I’ll do my best, Calloway.” And it was sincere. Bethany grew up in a close knit community and so the constant isolation was hard for her but ingrained.

Musing to herself for a moment, Shara shook her head. “Gods I’ve changed and it’s kinda weirdin’ me out.” She shrugged even as she smirked.

“My mentor told me once, after her time was up and she ‘retired’ that the changes she was able to make, to find who she was at her core was the most exciting time of her life. And that coming from a half Vulcan. I hope your changes are as exciting for you.” Calloway was older and Bethany, knowing she was on Voyager, saw her more as a mother or aunt figure, but she wouldn’t call either woman old. Bethany still had a long journey ahead of her before she could go back to who she really was.

“Well, it’s been a pretty exciting ride so far, can’t see what the rest is like,” she said with a laugh. “And call me Shara. Never was one for formalities. What’s your preference?”
