Nadine looked at, no stared at Micah. They were serious! Well, she said she was in, didn’t she? And she knew next to nothing about these people, so who was she to object? She laughed a bit. “Well, today has been an adventure already, might as well keep it going! Why not, let’s do it.”

Shara was grinning widely, despite the reality of what was about to happen sitting under the surface. =/\=I got it all fixed up. There’s a nice baby grand delivered to the point we mentioned. The guy who I bought it from was dismayed I wouldn’t let him send out a tuner to make sure it was perfect. I told him to make it spic and span before it left and you’d treat it as if it were your own baby. You will treat it like it’s your own baby, won’t you Husband?=/\= she said, teasing and entirely not. =/\=Oh! And a friend at HQ of mine is sending a crate to that same spot as well. Cleaned out my locker.=/\= Her voice changed, dropping in brightness, ever so slightly more somber.

=/\= Understood, Wife. We’ll be home in about three or four hours. You might wanna go get something for dinner. Shed out back has everything you’ll need. Love ya, sexy.=/\= and he turned off the comms. He slid the device over to Nadine and said “Call your school, keep it on speaker. Let ‘em know you’ll be gone a few days.” At that point their food arrived and Micah smiled. “Thank you so much. It smells and looks amazing.” and teh waitress smiled and left them to it.

Nadine thanked Leisha and put in the call to her school, quickly getting the principal on the line. “Hey Yamana. Something of a family emergency has come up and I need to be away for two or three days. I know Caitlin is free, so can you get her to cover my class for the rest of the week?”

Well that was the question, wasn’t it? “Yeah, just rather overwhelmed right now and I need to go take care of some things. I just…” Nadine didn’t look at Micah.

“Will do. Thanks Yamana. Bye.” Nadine closed the call and blew out a breath before turning her attention to her meal. She pulled a slice of the grilled mushrooms out of it’s gooey swiss cheese bed and popped it in her mouth, savouring the bite. “So… fill me in. I know I’m going to learn a lot and it’s going to be a lot to process. But what can you tell me ahead of time. I mean there are things I’m wondered about and I know she’ll answer, but you’re here and we’ve got time to kill, man who is married to my birth mom,” she said, her hazel eyes glimmering slightly wth seeming amusement.

Micah chewed a bite of burger slowly, looking at her as he held the burger in his metal hand. He looked thoughtful… and finally he swallowed and said “Might be easier if you ask me what you wanna know. But we can start here…” and he pulled out his micro-PaDD and pulled up a picture he had taken of Shara and Faye on the Manhattan. He quick edited Faye out… Nadine having a sister was up to Shara to say, not him. He then showed her the picture. “Thats her. So you know why I knew she was your mom when I first saw you.”

Nadine leaned forward and really took in the image. “Whoa,” she said softly. “I mean, there are differences, sure, but the bones of her face alone.” She beamed and looked up at Micah. “From what little I know she’s been all over the place so it was unlikely we’d just randomly run across each other. But I’d still look you know. I’d walk down the street, catching people’s faces to see if there was a resemblance. But there never was.” She pushed the PaDD back and took a bite of her burger.

“So, tell me about you two,” she said before brunching on an onion ring.

Micah smiled. “Met her while we were workin’ on a project. We hit it off. I invited her to see a place I knew about. She said yes. We got married. That’s about it. What else you wanna know about her?” he said with a slight smile and emphasizing that he wasn’t the topic of conversation. “Or tell me about you. How’d you become a teacher? Where’d you go to school? You have any brothers or sisters? Why Portland?” Each question was asked casually, no sign or hint of any one being more important than the other… but one, for Micah, most certainly was.

Nadine studied for a moment but simply launched into her answers. “Well, my dad got work in Seattle after we spent a year in London. We left Alpha Centauri when I was six. I love Seattle and that’s where I grew up mostly, but I got accepted to the University here for teaching and made the move. But I fell in love with Portland and stayed. There was a period of time I lived elsewhere, but after my divorce I moved back. It’s home,” she said softly.

“No siblings. My parents couldn’t have kids of their own because of my mom’s health issues, and they had two adoptions fall through before they got me. After that they were done. Didn’t want to risk going through that process again, so it was just the three of us, Nadine said.

Micah nodded and smiled. “So if ya don’t mind me askin’… what happened with the marriage? I mean, I guess technically I’m kinda your step-dad.... need to know if I gotta go break somebody’s leg or sumthin’.” and he gave her a wink and took a bite of the burger after a drink of the malt. He glanced at the malt glass and gave it a look that said Daaaaaammmmmmn. Thats good!

She picked up an onion ring and set it back down, her mood suddenly sombre. “I put off getting married and having kids for a little while and then after I married Daewon and we tried for kids it took us a little long to conceive and needed assistance. and it definitely put a strain on the relationship. But then we had Joshua.” She picked up another onion ring and set it back down. “We lost Josh five years ago. Aircar accident. Some couples can weather the loss of a child, but our had already been strained. We could barely be in the same room. Our cumulative grief just… sank us. We divorced after a year and I moved out here.”
