Brows knit with curiosity and a touch of fear, she looked at the secretary and then back at ‘Micchael’. “Okay, I’ll just grab my coat and let my aide know I’ll be a little longer. Meet you at the door.”
Nadine slipped down the hall and through a door near the end of the main hall. She reappeared a moment later slipping on a long raincoat and joined the the security man. “Do I get to know what this is about?” she asked, not so much afraid but just feeling uneasy. It wasn’t everyday someone showed up from Federation Security wanting to talk to you after all.

“Oh, absolutely. But first… I’m really hungry. I meant what I said about lunch.” and he smiled and walked her to the ground car. A few short minutes later and they were seated in a replica 50’s diner. ‘Michael’ looked at the menu and said “Get whatever you like, it’s on me. Then we can talk.” The waitress appeared and he ordered a double cheeseburger with bacon, french fries, and a chocolate malt. “The malts come highly recommended, by the way.” and he gave her a friendly smile.
“I know. I work close by,” she said with a snort before turning her attention to their waitress. “Hey Leisha, nice to see you again. Black coffee and the mushroom swiss with onion rings. Oh and ask Karl if he’s got any of that new special sauce he’s been playing with.”
After they had ordered, Micah/Michael leaned back and looked at Nadine. “So… as to what all this is about. Tell me, Ms. Wells… what do you know about your real mother?”
Pikelsimer
Her expectant expression immediately fell and she drew in a couple quick breaths before forcing herself to breathe deeply. “You mean my birth mother. The woman who adopted me is my real mother. She raised me after all.”
“Fair enough. My apologies.” he said flatly.
“But what I do know about is… very little. I know her name, Shara Costa. I know I was one month old when she surrendered me to an adoption agency on Alph Centauri and Kennedy and Preston adopted me from there. I managed to find a reference to her on this lunar colony at Arkelis. She got married and they moved to Tracken Two. I lose her after that, but then again the colony was destroyed and everyone was killed. So I assumed that was it. Except that then this Maquis group shows up on the USS Voyager and it was all over the news and I… I don’t know why, but something made me look into it. It sort of was a dead end though, because I tried inquiring with Starfleet, but they gave me the cold shoulder. Something about rules against giving out personal information of personnel. And I didn’t even want that much but to know if I was looking for the right person. But they couldn’t help me. And I don’t know, I didn’t know where else to look. There is no Shara Costa around that I can find and I think she probably died on that colony. I had to concede that I just wanted her to have been on that ship somehow.” Nadine shrugged and though she had delivered the whole thing rather matter-of-factly, there was an intensity in her eyes so reminiscent of those she was related to.

Micah watched her closely, looking for any hint of deceit. There were none, and no one was that good. He smiled at her and said “Okay. But you’ve kept looking. Records show that. So…” and he leaned forward and crossed his arms on the table, “What do your parents think of your search? Are they supportive?”
Pikelsimer
Nadine nodded. “They were always up front about me being adopted. I was almost six when they first told me and explained how it all worked. I also asked them if it would be okay if I looked her up when I was of finally of age to do so. I didn’t want to hurt them, though I think my mother took it harder at first than she wanted to admit. But as I looked for things and turned up clues and then dead ends, they were there for me. When I learned about what the Dominion did, well, not I’m not too proud to say I cried for three days straight. Even if it wasn’t her, it was just… unfathomable, you know?”
Leisha swung by and set the cup of coffee down on the table and after thanking her, Nadine took a sip. “It was my dad who suggested maybe there wasn’t anything to be found and asked if I could live with that. I didn’t know for a long time, but every now and again I’d get that strange feeling again that I should keep searching. I stopped telling them about it years ago though. Enough was enough. I am their daughter and I didn’t want to hurt them more.” This man knew something about Shara. No two ways about it. Maybe he could tell her how she died for certain. But she was patient and she channelled all her teaching skills into waiting for whatever it was he wanted to say to her.

Micah caught the glimmer of realization. Oh yeah… She’s got Sha’s ability to read people. he thought to himself. He smiled and leaned closer. “So… as I’m sure you are aware by now, I know about your mom. In fact…” and he locked his eyes onto hers and stared at her the way only he could… the way that locked suspects and other agents down and refused to let them look away.
“I know your mother. I saw her not two hours ago. She’s currently buying a piano. Do you play?”
