Shara gave a nod. “Easily done. Just let me know. I have no intention of poking about too much but being able to monitor things will be crucial. If you need a hand at any point with programming, let me know, but otherwise, just keep me in the loop and I’m sure we’ll avoid any conflicts.” Working with others wasn’t foreign to her, but it was usually far more compartmentalized than she was knew this role on theAsimov would be for her.

Bethany nodded, “I’ll do that. It will take me a day to get the equipment up and well I’m not sure how much longer after that. I’ve never actually used these programs with an AI as sophisticated as the one here, so I might have to tweak my programming some.” This didn’t seem to bother Bethany, in fact she looked quite excited about it. “Is there anything I can do for you?” Bethany seemed to have a permanent grin on her face and the question was genuine rather than strictly business.

Shara pondered for a moment to figure out the best way to approach this. “This is the first time I’ve served with a crew in almost twenty years. Since then I’ve been mostly solo operating, usually backed by one or two people elsewhere keeping me connected. My work was deep cover, usually long-term. I know you understand all of that, and I think it’s good because we understand each other a little bit better than the rest of the senior staff might. But the only thing I’m concerned about that I’d like to avoid is us inadvertently stepping on each other’s toes. You’re the Chief of Security and you have a team to manage as you manage the security of the ship. That’s your job. My job is to collect, manage and disseminate information that will help you and everyone else do their jobs. In my own way I also am working to keep the ship safe. And I have no problem with you doing your thing when the circumstances call for it, but I want to our roles distinct so we don’t end up with misunderstandings down the line that could have been avoided.”

Bethany nodded, “I think, realistically we should admit from the beginning we are going to step on each other’s toes. Unintentionally but it will happen. Now for the most part my sneaky computer skills are meant to hack, evaluate, and leave nast surprises. In the course of that I collect a lot of information in order to allow me to determine how best to mess up their ship from the inside out. I am happy to have you piggyback from my connection and share what I find. Or vice-versa if you are willing. But on a normal day to day basis I won’t have time for the basic and indepth information gathering and analysis you will be doing. I am always happy to help.” Bethany leaned back gazing at the woman for a moment. “I agree we both have a better understanding of each other than most of the crew. I expect there will be some stumbles along the way. I’ve worked with crews but never been part of them. Maybe we can, when needed, help each other check those isolation tendencies.”
