Her body almost vibrated with anticipation. It was the damnedest thing but when they were in each other’s presence it was like they were teenagers, all full of lust, except there was the distinct appreciation for each other that came with age. “Mmmmm, that is an idea. How about a compromise. We test out here, then you give me the amazing coffee and then we initiate Test Two.”

“Deal. Now… we have way too many clothes on. Maybe I can help you with that?” and he stood up, holding her and carrying her back to the living quarters.

A few hours later, Micah picked up his bags and Shara’s bag and guitar. “Now if I’m not mistaken, I owe you a cup of coffee. C’mon, my love. Let’s get you home.” and he ushered her out of Vanessa and to the house.

Shara moved with the languid ease of someone who felt entirely comfortable in her body and who had enjoyed herself to the fullest extent. But if there was anything that made her pause, even a little, it was how easily he used that particular term of endearment. Sure, they had plenty for each other and their own manners of speech provided plenty of opportunities to use them, but it was so.. matter-of-fact, so honest with them. She wished it didn’t, but the truth was it still terrified her. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said with a warm smile.

Three steps up onto the broad porch, and Micah opened the door. It opened onto a large living area. A stone fireplace set into the opposite wall, in front of which lay an actual brown bearskin rug. A large overstuffed couch and two matching chairs sat around a low table.. To the left was an impressive kitchen with gas stove, large cabinets, and the door of a walk-in fridge-freezer. Between the living area and kitchen was a wooden spiral staircase the went to the second floor.

“So… whatcha think? You like?” he asked as they moved inside.

With no bags in hand to deal with, Shara was free to move about and take in the details. When she turned to Micah, there was a softness in her features. “It’s perfect,” she declared with a small nod. “A very lovely home.”

She moved towards the kitchen. “I can make coffee. About the only thing I am can’t mess up. But it is your kitchen and I’ve been kicked out of enough of them to know better not to set a toe in without permission,” she teased, a lopsided grin on her face.

~Shara

“No no no… I promised you coffee, I make it. Besides, I know where everything is. Why don’t you go upstairs and get settled? Feel free to take a drawer or three. Whatever you need.” He set the bags next to the stairs and then her guitar gently by one of the chairs, and then made his way to the kitchen.

“Okay,” she said softly, a strange feeling washing over her. And unlike the past few months she would actually have time to figure out what it was exactly. Grabbing her bag, Shara made her way up the stairs stepping with the silent movements of someone used to hiding her presence.

The upstairs was actually one large room. The ceiling followed the pitch of the roof, and there windows on three sides. The wall without had a door set in it, presumably for the bathroom. A large platform bed was set against one window with the foot facing the far window opposite. Looking out the windows, the morning light would come in at the foor of the bed and the evening would come through the window at the head of the bed. A large wooden dresser sat opposite the bathroom door with six drawers, three on each side.

The walls were decorated with mementos, memories, and accolades of past journeys… past lives. Amongst the various awards and commendations, two stood out. The first was a personal letter from a past President of the Federation and the Leader of the Senate thanking him for his dedication and service… for what was not mentioned. The second thing was a medal in a glass case above the dresser: The Silver Star.

Micah

Setting the bags near the dresser and began to take in the details, the pieces of his life he felt were important to have out, including the medal. He’d probably laugh if she knew hers had spent past years in a storage locker on Earth, unneeded until they were. She had them with her, tucked into her bag since she might actually be in a dress uniform from time to time on her new assignment.

Moving over to the dresser, she found the first drawer that was free and began to unpack her duffel. She had never needed a ton of clothes either, so it all fit neatly into one drawer. The one thing about always having been on assignment was that she gathered items, including clothing, specific to her undercover role and then it was all recycled to remove evidence she had ever been there. It had never bothered her before, but as she set her basic set of garments into the dresser, she realized that her time on the Manhattan with Faye had been the first time since she herself had travelled the Delta Quadrant that she had lived somewhere and taken something with her. Back in San Francisco there was a crate of her true worldly possessions and maybe it was time to be reunited with the tiny pieces of a life lived.

The smell of fresh coffee wafted up from downstairs and soon Micah came up the stairs and walked over to Shara, mug in each hand.

“Here you go. As promised. And none of that replicated, neo-soy bulls#!+ either. This is the good stuff.” he said as he handed her a cup. “Get settled okay?” he asked as he took a drink.
