Sara signed the last report for the Asimov’s prior mission and sat back behind her desk in her ready room. It was still an adjustment. She straightened her uniform, and turned to new business. There was a problem upcoming, one Sara hoped to solve, in an old turn of phrase as “two birds with one stone.”

=/\= On my way, Captain. =/\= came the reply after a few seconds. Less than two minutes later, Si’Rek pressed the chime on the outside of the Ready Room.

Si’Rek, CE

“Come in!” Sara called. When the door opened, she said “Lieutenant, please come in, have a seat. Can I offer you something from the replicator?”

Si’Rek inclined his head once in acknowledgement and said “Oh, no thank you Captain. But please help yourself.” and he took a seat and set his hands in his lap. “I trust this isn’t about the issue with the relays to the Comm station, Ma’am. I assure you we would be working on it right now, but we have to wait till the station gets done with the auxiliary power couplings.”

Si’Rek, CE

Sara got herself a coffee and sat down. “No, no, nothing like that Lieutenant. Though, I suppose, somewhat related. This was your first mission with the Asimov, correct?”

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

Si’Rek nodded and said “It was. Not quite the initial outing I had expected, but it did let me learn a great deal about the ship. And we made it home, so I will chalk that up to a win.”

Si’Rek, CE

Sara nodded. “As do I. You see, Lieutenant, your department went above and beyond to get us out of that mess. I’m quite impressed.” Sara pulled a small object from her top desk drawer and put it on her pocket. “Lieutenant Si’Rek, I’d like to keep your talent for calm and quick thinking under pressure on the bridge. We have a place for you at Operations, should you agree.”

Si’Rek stared blankly for a moment, but then said “If you feel that is best for the ship and the crew, then I absolutely accept. Will I be reporting to a Chief Operations officer, a new Chief Engineer, or to you directly ma’am?” he asked flatly. Operations wasn’t pure engineering, no. But it was still staffed by Engineers, and he hoped that whomever the new Chief of Operations or CE was, they at least knew their stuff. Trying to do both jobs would be hellish. But there was no way he was going to let the Engineering section suffer if he could help it.

Si’Rek, Not the CE

“You will be the Chief of Operations, reporting to me. Well, per standard chain of command, to Commander Enai and then to me. To be clear, I am not asking you to run both Engineering and Operations. A new Chief, Lt Rovan Moor will take over Engineering.” Sara sat back behind her desk. “I will ask you to assist in the ongoing repairs, and bring the new CE up to speed on our situation.”

Si’Rek flashed a brief smile at the mention of the name, and then said “I understand completely. And I assure you, the handover will go smoothly. I am excited about the new role ma’am, but I will need some time to inform the department and clear the office. If that is all, I should get to it.”

“One more thing.” Sara withdrew a small velvet box from her pocket and placed it on the desk, opening the lid. Inside was a single hollow rank pip. “Congratulations Lieutenant Commander.” She rose and extended her hand to him.

Ai’Rek stared at the pip in shock for a moment,and then quickly regained his computer and said “Thank you, Ma’am. I… don’t quite know what else to say. I am surprised, to say the least. But thank you.” and he took her hand in his blue, gray,and green one and shook it. “I will make sure this is something you won’t look back on with regret.”

Si’Rek, Ops Chief

“I’m sure I won’t, Commander.” Sara smiled broadly. “Take a few days and get engineering ready, then report to the bridge.”
