Sitting in the rec halls bar Kala sipped on her Pina Colada it aromas wafting around the unjoined trill creating a tropical feel and her third for the night meaning she was rather enjoying the rum and coconut-based drink. For the past hour, she had been watching a young family of four play what people called ‘bowling’ she had never played or heard of it before but it seemed to involve rolling a heavy sphere down a long path toward 10 odd-shaped statues in the aim of knocking them down, though it appeared there were different variants of the game because the older woman had barriers which erected from the side of the stopping it going into the grooves on either side meaning she scored zero and the children used a device which they loaded the ball and pushed it down.

“An old earth game,” came the southern British accent of the first officer as he came into the hall, giving a nod. “Aim is to knock as many of them down as you can in one hit,” he added. He had gone bowling with his brother when they were younger, and it was still a hobby he enjoyed himself from time to time. “It’s been a few years since I last went to a bowling alley myself,” Simon said.

Kala appreciated the explanation, “And how do they win? Sometimes they are sad and sometimes they are happy” Just then a cheer went up as the older man knocked down all the pins, but then moments later eight of then ten were knocked with either corner still standing. “And they always see angry when that happens. It is an interesting sport.” She turned her full attention to the arrival, “I don’t think we’ve met, though I do know you who you are I’m Ensign Gorvel. It’s nice to meet you, sir.”

“Well, you get two attempts each round to knock as many of the pins down. They get annoyed when it ends up like that because it makes it almost impossible to knock down all ten pins, if you didn’t on your first attempt each round,” he continued explaining. “If you knock down all ten pins on your first turn of the round, that’s even better,” he added. “And I’m Lieutenant Commander Simon Starr,” he said in the southern British accent that was not of the city. From the accent, it sounded like he was raised on a British farm.

Kala smiled, she knew who he was but didn’t want to come across as too eager but it was nice to listen to his voice so she certainly didn’t mind his introducing himself. She had heard it before when she visited London, which was on Earth and the Capital of the United Kingdom. “Would you be willing to show me how to play Lieutenant Commander?” She asked wistfully, “I mean how hard really is it?” She looked back to the alleys.

“It’s been a while, but sure,” Simon said with a smile, gesturing over to one of the free alleys. “the floor by the bowling alley is extremely slick. So, there are special shoes to wear,” he walked over to the replicator and said “Size ten bowling shoes,” he asked the computer to create. It took a few moments but the shoes were made, and he put them on. “These help with the grip on the floor,” he explained before setting up the computer for a new game with two people. “So, do you want to go first or second?” he asked. “Unlike cards, going first doesn’t necessarily give an advantage,” he smiled.

Kala followed the XOs lead and had replicated a pair of size six shoes for her small dainty feet and slipped them on, leaving her high knee boots to one side. She twisted her foot in different directions and once even tried slipping the shoe across the floor but as the Commander had explained they did offer some friction. “I think I will go second, and see how you do it,” She said with a nod as she sat on one of the chairs that surrounded the center console and where the balls appeared from, it was then she noticed the ball had different numbers and were colored differently. “Why are they numbered and colored differently? The Balls?”
