He was reviewing a project of his that he had been working on during his off time. It was the design for a new shield system. The process had been long, an undertaking of many years. He was not an engineer, far from it. But Tiglath knew how shield and weapons systems worked and how to repair them, and he felt that he could improve the current system on star ships. This design, he hoped could be that improvement. : : : : : : : : : : : : Tiglath looked down at his project again. It was time to get a second opinion. : : : : : : : : : : : : =^=Ashur to Lt Emmitt, Do you have a moment? I would like to talk to you about the shields.=^= Tiglath asked the new Chief Engineer. : : : : : : : : : : OCC: Resurrecting this side sim for the new CE. : : : : : : : : : : : -CTO : : : : : : : : Chris pulled his head out from under a console down in engineering and wiped the sweat off his forehead. Reinstalling new parts while power still flowed through the channel was definitely nerve wracking, but they couldn’t afford to be down at the moment for any system when he heard the CTO reach out. : : : : : : : : =^= Emmitt here. I can be there in a few minutes Lieutenant, just finishing up some part replacements. =^= : : : : : : =^=Roger that.=^= : : : : : : : : He set the coil spanner back in the box off to his side, before getting up and dusting himself off and heading towards the CTO’s office. : : : : : : : : Lt. (jg) Chris Emmitt (CE) : : : : : : Tiglath shared his office with the COS. He was sitting at his desk in the corner of the room. A small bookshelf was near his desk and it contained several hard copies of books on strategy and tactics. A biography of Hannibal Barca and Napoleon. The Art of War was there book by General Martok in addition to several others. : : : : : : Because the COS and others routinely used the office, Tiglath didn’t look up when someone entered. : : : : : : -CTO : : : : As he stepped into the office, he took a quick look around and spotted Lt. (jg) Ashur and walked over announcing his presence along the way. “Evening Lieutenant Ashur, What kind of questions do you have about the shields?” He was still getting familiar with the systems himself, but he was already fairly comfortable with how the Ark Angel was operating. Hopefully he could answer any questions the Chief Tactical Officer had in regards to them. : : : : Lt. (jg) Chris Emmitt (CE) : : Tiglath looked up He stood up to shake his hand. “Good Evening Chief. I do have a question, but not on our shields.” He explained gesturing to an extra seat at his desk. “For the last several years I have been working on a new shield system. I have been reviewing combat logs from both the dominion war and our encounters with the Borg. It seems like the vast majority of our adversaries use energy based weapons. While our current shields can absorb energy and physical attacks, They don’t do either very well.” He grabbed a padd from off his desk and handed it to the Chief Engineer. : : “My design, while incomplete, as I am no engineer, would focus the shield systems to better handle energy attacks, but at the expense of physical attacks. The idea of this shield is that, while it starts off very weak, the more energy that hits it, the stronger it becomes. The energy from the attacks is diverted into the shield grid, strengthening it, any excess energy is absorbed into these battery like areas. However, it requires a lot of energy just to raise the shields and my attempts at simulation show that anything using this shield grid would be badly damaged before the shield gained enough energy to fully protect the ship. However, after two hits at the shield, the ship is essentially invincible to energy attacks. The excess energy is then transferred to the phasers for use against any adversary.” He explained to the chief. : : -CTO OOC: Note with appropriate tweaking for spec use balance if you guys rp this out to a conclusion and are interested in putting it in as a tech submission let me or more likely whoever is edir next term (if its not me!) OOC: I’ll reply to this in the am! Time got away from me tonight, my apologies!

Chris studied the design and nodded as Tiglath explained about it. Theoretically it was possible, but he could quite wrap his head around it at the moment. “Hmm …” He took a seat at one of the chairs in front of his desk and tapped the padd against the bottom of his chin. “So the shield matrix gets overloaded before any charging can actually occur.. We don’t quite have the storage necessary for activating a shield system this large..” He thought for a moment. One solution was to just raise the shields before they were needed before going into combat, but it’s not like any of the crew were clairvoyant so there’s no way to predict a fight and to raise them well enough beforehand.

The other was to alter the shield matrix to allow for this compensation, but it would be too much of an initial draw for the system to handle. “All power would need to go to shields until they came up to include auxiliary power along with the shutdown of all non-essential equipment in order for the charge to come back quickly enough .. but that would leave us without teeth and would be useless against physical weapons or torpedoes ..” He bit his lip and frowned a bit. “I don’t think a ship this size cou-” He stopped mid sentence and his expression became neutral as if staring off into space. “Capacitors..? What if we install capacitors into the shield matrix to hold a portion of the charge prior to the shields going up? They’d be able to charge slowly overtime during normal ship use and would be able to be activated in conjunction with raising the shield system. It would be a little rough at the start, but with the capacitors feeding the shield matrix, it would drastically decrease the vulnerability window until the shields could sustain themselves.” He looked down at the padd again to think of where they could be installed throughout the matrix. “Though they would need a few days to charge back up .. so we can’t really hop into one fight after another. Thoughts?”

Lt. (jg) Chris Emmitt (CE)

Tiglath nodded. “The general idea behind this shield system is that,” He paused considering how to word it. ” Lets say we have two different types of weapons hitting the shield, both are 100 watts blasts for the sake of easy numbers. The first one does it’s damage over 4 seconds, at 25 watts/sec and the second one it’s all it’s power in the first second. This shield, when first raised would only be able to absorb 50 watts a second, increasing the more energy that hits it. So the first attack, the shields would be able to absorb it easily, while the second attack it would take a few hits to strengthen it to the point where it would be able to absorb it all.” He explained

“Tactical would be able to use any excess power from the shields for critical systems on the ship. It looks like the downside is, as you say, capacitors. What do we do with the excess energy? How do we store it and, if the battle concludes, what do we do with the excess energy that we no longer need?” He asked, He had dozens of more questions that he didn’t have the answers to.

OOC: Gonna try to revive this one this week! My LOA and work disruptions have been difficult to get used to, but I hope to continue on this one here shortly!
