Allison shook her head at Starr. “That’s a pessimistic way to look at it,” she commented with a slight frown. It hadn’t even occurred to her that her friendly chatter could be taken to be a lead in to something else. She returned to the jog beside him, the frown still marring her features as she pondered his response.

Simon smiled and gently nudged the chief, “It’s OK ma’am,” he said with a smile. “I believe you” he chuckled and then picked up the pace of the jog slightly. Maybe she really didn’t have any bad news to share. It had probably been the first time in a while when a good conversation hasn’t changed into something bad.

“What’s your favorite place, Simon?” another female figure asked as Simon looked out, an older woman, and there was some familiar resemblance. Starr looked up and smiled at the thought of his mother. “We should go there with Tom when he gets back,” she said with a smile. A year later, they still hadn’t found Tom and Starr flinched slightly at the memory on the farm, before returning to the beach in the holodeck, and noticing he had fell a few meters behind, picked up the pace once more.

From the other side, it looked like Starr had seen something not there, but after a slight flinch returns to normal and continues jogging, he fell behind the chief for the first time since they began running, and slowed to an almost walking pace for a moment, before noticing and picking up the pace.

Allison’s empathic abilities filled with Starr’s pleasant memory and then his sadness and she slowed her pace, narrowing avoiding running into the ensign as he had slowed and then picked up his pace again. A sympathetic frown filled her face as she put a hand on his shoulder to stop him as he was about to go past her. “Do you want to talk about it?” she asked, gently.

Simon shrugged “Not really much to say at the moment, I guess,” he replied. “It’s been a while since that happened, and well - that’s gonna be the case until I know what’s happened. However long that takes,” he said, picking the pace back up and catching up. “It’s more the case of not knowing what happened, more than anything else, ya know?” he asked rhetorically.

Even though the question was rhetorical, Allison nodded in agreement. “I understand completely… ambiguity is the worst,” she affirmed. “Do you want to keep running or are you ready to say we’ve earned our next meal and maybe some dessert to go with it?”
