“It sounds like you’re definitely keeping busy then,” Allison responded with a grin, enjoying the slight shocks that came up her legs as her feet hit the packed sand as well as the cool water that squished in between her toes. “I think I’ve spent this whole week chasing down crew members who took the relaxation part of rest and relaxation a little too far.” She smiled bemusedly. “I can’t say that was how I envisioned the Chief of Security position working out. It wasn’t long ago that I was in your shoes…” A flicker of reminiscing appeared in her eyes. “I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t made any real progress, though. What was the last progress you did make?” She kept the pace brisk but steady to allow them to converse.

“Personally, I prefer the rest part,” Simon responded with a slight smile. “I learned while I was at the academy, that our department doesn’t exactly get all the juicy jobs, there’s a lot of tedious tasks we have to do, but even then, I’m OK with that,” he said shrugging.

“As to where I got last, I found that the ship was last sighted a few lightyears away from Orion space, on a trade route that took them past that way. It’s possible the Orions captured them, it’s also possible that they joined them, or maybe they destroyed them - nobody knows for sure,” he answered the chief’s question with a sigh.

Allison smiled sympathetically at the ensign as she heard his sigh. “It’s so frustrating not knowing,” she observed, picking up the pace slightly more to distract Starr from his troubles. Catching sight of a rock formation about 100 yards ahead, she grinned at Starr with a slight twinge of evil dancing in her eyes. “Race you to the rocks?” she asked.

Lieut (j.g.) Devlin, COS

Simon eyed the rocks and also gave a hint of menace in his eyes, before he entered into a full sprint towards the rocks without responding to the question, the action being enough to show that Starr accepted the challenge.

Allison huffed a complaint at Starr’s head start and sprinted off after him, reaching the rocks only a step after him. She glared playfully at the ensign and, bending over to catch her breath for a moment, muttered, “you cheat.”

Simon chuckled slightly as she falls behind “We always have to be prepared, right, ma’am?” he said with a smile through deep breaths as he caught his breath after the race. “I mean, going on a run with the chief, of course there’s going to be a race involved at some point,” he added when his breathing regulated a little more. Once they had a couple of moments to intake some air, he turned his attention back to the exercise. “Well, we’re still talking, so we should get back to running?” he asked with a smile.

Allison rolled her eyes at Starr, although her thoughts momentarily stumbled over his use of “the chief.” It was difficult to remember that this was her role, not simply a junior officer still. She sighed internally and then grinned at Starr. “Well, I still have something left if you do,” she replied, and then jogged off down the beach again before Starr had a chance to respond.
