The Chief of Operations paused his work as the message came through from, watched as the Commander left the bridge. “Well guess I’ll stay here and violate the laws of physics and keep this thing open.” He said to absolutely nobody in particular, “I’m sure the universe will be receptive to my reason,”

=^= Lieutenant Hegush to NL McQueen, your team is preparing the shuttle to enter the anomaly, yes? We’ll have two Lieutenant Commanders and our Chief of Engineering on that shuttle. So, one small request, when they fly into a pulsing temporal anomaly so I would very much like those shields to be working and I want a ‘Yes sir’ as in you would personally climb onto the hull and hold the shield emitters together with your teeth if you had to. Is that clear? =^=

Falz could hear an audible gulp on the other line =^= Yes, sir =^=

=^= Excellent. I knew I liked you, =^=

Now it was his turn to do his bit. It wasn’t just his team that need to be holding things together with their teeth, he had three minutes to find a way to keep that anomaly open so that the Beta team could keep their comms open and work out what that dang signature was. If anything, anything at all, went wrong. By the Prophets, he wanted to be ready.

Lt. Hegush Chief of Operations.

Storm tapped a button on the command chair ” away team i am opening a channel for you to keep me updated” he said ” remember to not cause any temporal anamolies”

=^= “Kelley to Ark Angel. Captain T’Nara has authorized the next phase of the Pathfinder recovery operation. I want all departments moving immediately.”

Charlotte’s voice came across the ship’s internal communications network with the calm authority expected from the Ark Angel’s Executive Officer.

=^= “Operations, begin preparing the tractor beam for extraction. Bring the system to standby and coordinate directly with Engineering regarding the modified frequency. Do not initiate full-power engagement until the extraction window is confirmed.”

=^= “Engineering, I need final verification of the tractor-beam frequency and confirmation that the configuration has been simulated against the Pathfinder’s temporal displacement. Report any limitations or concerns directly to the bridge. Once Science identifies the stabilization window, we will not have time for guesswork.”

She continued without pause.

=^= “Science, maintain continuous monitoring of PX-941 and the Pathfinder’s temporal envelope. Track the stabilization cycle precisely and report the moment the next viable extraction window begins. Continue feeding your telemetry to Listening Post 47 so they can maintain an independent sensor picture.”

Charlotte moved to the next priority.

=^= “Away Team Beta, this is Commander Kelley. Prepare for immediate deployment. Check all equipment, environmental protection, communications, transporter support, and emergency medical supplies. You are to be ready to move the moment the bridge authorizes deployment. Do not enter the anomaly or establish contact with the Pathfinder without further orders.”

Her tone remained controlled, but the urgency behind the words was unmistakable.

=^= “Sickbay, prepare for the reception of Pathfinder personnel. We should anticipate anything from routine temporal disorientation to serious medical complications following prolonged exposure to the anomaly. Security, prepare for controlled reception of the recovered crew and coordinate with Medical.”

There was a brief pause before Charlotte delivered the final instruction.

=^= “This is a recovery operation, not an exploration mission. Every system we bring online has one purpose: getting the Pathfinder and her crew out of that anomaly alive. Maintain your assigned parameters, report deviations immediately, and be ready to execute when Captain T’Nara gives the order.”

Charlotte closed the transmission.

=^= “Kelley out.”

=^= Acknowledged, sir =^= Hegush put his project aside and immediately focused on the working on the tractor beam as Commander Kelley had asked. It was a good idea to be prepared to pull them out if they had to and there was no guarantee that the Pathfinder would be in any condition to get themselves out if they hadn’t managed to in around a hundred years.

Ensign Nala Shai’Mori t’Liriena remained seated at the bridge science station as Commander Kelley’s orders came across the comm.

Her ears shifted toward the speakers, listening carefully.

“Science, maintain continuous monitoring of PX-941 and the Pathfinder’s temporal envelope. Track the stabilization cycle precisely and report the moment the next viable extraction window begins. Continue feeding your telemetry to Listening Post 47 so they can maintain an independent sensor picture.”

Nala’s paws moved immediately across the science console.

“Aye, Commander.”

Nothing more needed to be said.

The sensor display before her was already filled with information from the anomaly—temporal variance, subspace distortion, gravitational fluctuations, and the shifting sensor image of the Pathfinder trapped within it.

Her amber eyes moved rapidly across the data.

There were patterns there.

There were always patterns.

Normally, Nala would have wanted to follow every one of them.

Today she had one job.

Monitor.

Measure.

Report.

She adjusted the science station to maintain a continuous sensor lock on the Pathfinder and PX-941, then isolated the temporal-envelope readings Commander Kelley needed. A secondary telemetry stream continued transmitting the Ark Angel’s sensor data to Listening Post 47.

Gibbs had been monitoring the feed. =^= “Gibbs to Ark Angel. Has Engineering done a simulation to see if the tractor beam idea is going to work? If so, has the tractor beam been modified to the proper frequency?” =^=

=/\=”This is “L’Essa in Main Engineering.” An exasperated female voice responded. “It might be easy for you Science boys to come up with a neat idea, but its the Engineering team that makes it a reality. Your miracle is going to take a little time. I’ll get back to you in five minutes or less.”=/\=

Lieutenant L’Essa was doing her best to keep Engineering running… but she set that aside for the shift to deal while she put Ensign Gibbs’s theory through the wringer.

The Orion woman tied her long blonde hair up in a sloppy bun to get it out of her face as she continued to build in the data to run the simulation. Wait a second… did they say temporal shields earlier? =/\=Bridge, this is Engineering. Is the defensive temporal bubble around the Pathfinder ACTUALLY tied to their shield system, or is that just the term they used? I won’t be able to get a lock on the Pathfinder if her shields are up. They disrupt the graviton-polarity source beams.”

Lt Izak Waryn - Chief Engineer - U.S.S. Ark Angel

Gibbs, listening in on the shared channel, replied. “According to the sensor logs and a transmission from Starfleet Command, Pathfinder is using her main deflector dish to create a static warp bubble. This warp bubble is used to block the temporal signals and is acting as a temporal shield. I believe that if match our tractor beam to the temporal frequency, we should be able to attach the tractor beam to the warp bubble. Then use it to pull Pathfinder out of the anomaly.”

“Lieutenant, Do you think this will work?”

Ensign Gibbs, Sci JO
USS Ark Angel

=^= In a typical situation for us to pull them in we’d have to extend our shields to cover them so they could take theirs down for us to get a lock on to pull them in, =^= Hegush piped up into the channel line, =^= Here they are using the deflector dish to create their warp bubble is vastly different to the way our shields are typically designed. It’s clever and it’s clearly been working, but the Pathfinder is several years past its warranty. The Ark Angel is a more powerful ship, by at least a century. We could feed our power into their deflector dish, since it’s a deflected shield it will cause the shields to expand out towards us. If we’re both under the same shield, we’ll be able to tow them out. =^=

Lt. Hegush Chief of Operations.

Gibbs considered the proposal. =^= “Considering your statement, if Ark Angel pumps power into Pathfinder’s current warp bubble, will their power distribution system hold up? Overloading the one thing that has been working to keep them stable seems to be a risk. Can someone in Engineering run a simulation and tell us how much energy we can pump into their warp bubble?” =^=

Ensign Gibbs, Sci JO
USS Ark Angel

“Feed the modulations through Ensign Gibbs, we will see the result soon enough,” Hegush replied.

The bridge remained quiet as Science finished feeding the final temporal-frequency calculations into Engineering and Operations. For several moments, the only indication that anything was happening came from the rapidly changing telemetry across the bridge displays. PX-941 continued its rhythmic pulse around the trapped Intrepid-class vessel, the anomaly briefly stabilizing before beginning another cycle of temporal distortion.

Then the Pathfinder’s deflector frequency matched the Ark Angel’s calculations.

Engineering reported that the Pathfinder could accept the controlled power transfer, but only within a narrow tolerance. The Ark Angel would have to reinforce the existing temporal envelope rather than overwhelm it. Too much power would destabilize the deflector; too little would leave the Pathfinder trapped.

The next stabilization window opened.

Ark Angel’s systems came alive.

A carefully regulated stream of power passed through the tractor-beam system and into the temporal envelope surrounding the Pathfinder. Rather than striking the Intrepid-class vessel directly, the tractor beam coupled with the expanded warp bubble generated by Pathfinder’s deflector.

For the first time since the Ark Angel arrived, the Pathfinder appeared completely stable on sensors.

Its hull stopped flickering between temporal states.

Its position became fixed.

The tractor beam had a lock.

Then Operations confirmed the connection.

The Ark Angel began pulling.

At first, there was almost no visible movement. The Pathfinder seemed reluctant to leave the anomaly, its temporal envelope stretching behind it as PX-941 attempted to maintain its grip. The Ark Angel’s engines compensated, holding the ship steady while the tractor beam continued drawing the stranded vessel toward normal space.

Science watched the temporal readings climb.

Eight seconds.

The Pathfinder moved another few dozen meters.

Ten seconds.

The outer edge of its temporal envelope began collapsing.

Engineering reported increasing stress on the Pathfinder’s deflector.

Eleven seconds.

The Ark Angel increased tractor output within the established safety margin.

Then the Pathfinder crossed the boundary.

For one brief instant, the Intrepid-class vessel seemed to exist in two places at once.

Then it was out.

The temporal envelope collapsed behind it in a rapidly shrinking distortion, and the violent fluctuations of PX-941 began returning to their previous pattern. The Ark Angel’s tractor beam automatically transitioned from the specialized temporal coupling configuration back to a conventional tractor lock.

The Pathfinder was no longer trapped.

It was physically present in normal space.

Its hull showed the unmistakable evidence of its ordeal—scorching across several sections of the outer hull, damaged sensor arrays, degraded nacelle components, and numerous areas where the ship’s systems were operating far below normal efficiency.

But the vessel was intact.

More importantly, its life-sign readings remained stable.

For several seconds there was nothing but the sound of bridge systems returning to normal operating parameters.

Gibbs sat dumbfound as Pathfinder’s status changed from trapped to safe. ‘It Worked! My crazy plan worked!” Gibbs was overwhelmed with emotion as he watched the readings come through the monitors.

“It worked, everyone. Pathfinder is free of the temporal anomaly.”

Ensign Gibbs, Sci JO
USS Ark Angel

Hegush cracked an eyebrow, a bemused expression on his face, “Did you?” he asked Gibbs, “I was labouring under the illusion that this was a team effort,”

“You did good work today, Ensign.” He followed on with, showing his pessimistic side was not intended with any malice, “Thanks to your modulations, Lieutenant Waryn’s team and my own were able to make the adjustments to balance the shields and tractor beam stable enough we could pull the ship out.”

Then he reached for comms =^= Lieutenant Hegush to Commander Kelley, we have successfully pulled the U.S.S Pathfinder to safety.=^=

Lt. Hegush, Chief Operations Officer

Gibbs had a flush of annoyance at the initial statement of the Ops Officer. ‘It was my idea. I didn’t see you propose anything.’ he muttered in his head.

But Hegush was correct. Without merging the two data streams, without confirming the tolerances, without Engineering running simulations, without modifications to the tractor beam, without all of the other discordant tasks that had to work together to make his idea work, Pathfinder would still be trapped. Enjoy your small victory Walt but know that you were not the only one who made it happen.

U.S.S Ark Angel

The momentary sense of triumph resonating across the bridge of the USS Ark Angel proved to be exceedingly short-lived, shattering just as Ensign Gibbs began to revel in the apparent success of his theoretical extraction plan. Even as the battered hull of the Intrepid-class USS Pathfinder physically settled into normal space, the immense energetic stress placed upon the older vessel’s deflector grid by the modern tractor beam began to manifest in a cascading series of catastrophic system failures. The shimmering static warp bubble that had dutifully served as the Pathfinder’s temporal shield for an untold duration began to violently fluctuate, emitting blinding arcs of azure and violet plasma that lashed out across the vacuum of space toward the Ark Angel’s primary hull. What appeared initially as a clean and triumphant rescue rapidly deteriorated into a highly volatile situation, as the raw kinetic and energetic force of the Ark Angel’s tractor beam proved far too aggressive for the delicate, century-old modifications holding the stranded ship together.

Deep within the bowels of the distressed vessel, the brilliant but deeply fragile temporal shielding matrix originally engineered by the Pathfinder’s Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Commander Dax Mercer, finally reached its absolute structural limit and catastrophically buckled under the overwhelming power influx. Mercer’s ingenious human engineering had miraculously sustained the static warp bubble against the crushing pressures of the anomaly, but the sudden and forceful coupling with a twenty-fifth-century tractor emitter triggered a massive chroniton feedback loop within the ship’s aging deflector relays. The protective temporal envelope did not simply collapse; it violently ruptured, fracturing into a chaotic localized temporal storm that immediately engulfed both the Pathfinder and the forward sections of the Ark Angel in a swirling maelstrom of displaced chroniton radiation and subspace distortion. The delicate balance that the operations and engineering teams had so carefully calibrated disintegrated in a matter of seconds, transforming a controlled tow into a dangerously uncontrolled energetic tether between two massive starships caught in a localized temporal sheer.

Aboard the Ark Angel, the immediate consequences of this temporal rupture manifested as a deafening symphony of blaring proximity alarms and critical system warnings as the bridge’s main sensor arrays were instantaneously overwhelmed by an impossible flood of contradictory data. Ensign Gibbs’s science console erupted into a blinding cascade of scarlet error messages, completely burying his previous victory under a tidal wave of chaotic telemetry that suggested the Pathfinder was simultaneously disintegrating, jumping to maximum warp, and existing in a dozen distinct temporal echoes at the exact same moment. The ship’s primary astrometrics and tactical sensors went entirely blind to normal space, locked in a frantic and futile cycle of recalibration as the chroniton surge blinded the optical and subspace arrays with intense temporal static. If the young science officer had momentarily believed that he possessed all the answers, the violently flashing consoles and the sudden terrifying shudder vibrating through the Ark Angel’s deck plating served as a stark and immediate reminder that the universe rarely adheres perfectly to a theoretical simulation.

WHITE TIGER

Gibbs was bombarded with flashing warning lights and seemingly conflicting sensor data at the Science workstation on Outpost 47. Nothing was making sense. First Pathfinder was fine, then she was on the verge of total system failure. It took his brain almost a few moments to focus on what the problem seemed to be.

The problem was his idea. The power output of Ark Angel’s tractor beam was too much for the damaged warp bubble Pathfinder had erected,

Inwardly Gibbs was horrified as the sensor data came in displaying just how bad his idea had been. While it did get Pathfinder out of the anomaly, and for that he could claim a small victory, it seemed to have been Pathfinder’s death knell.

He heard the order from Commander Vance that the station had to be evacuated and waited for the Command from T’Nara for Ark Angel crew to return to the ship.
