The heavy, reinforced blast doors of the commanding officer’s private ready room parted with a quiet pneumatic hiss, allowing Captain T’Nara and Commander Vance to step back into the subdued lighting and persistent rhythmic hum of Listening Post 47’s main operations center. The atmosphere remained thick with concentration as Starfleet personnel continued monitoring the unstable temporal distortion dominating the primary viewscreen, unaware of the highly classified command decision that had just been transmitted through the secure subspace channel. Vance moved toward the central tactical plotting table with the uncompromising posture of a veteran officer who had weathered more than his share of crises before stopping and addressing the assembled personnel.

“Attention on deck,” he announced, his authoritative voice carrying easily across the operations center.

“We have received a Priority One command transmission from Starfleet Operations in San Francisco regarding a significant change in our operational oversight. It is with a profound sense of sorrow that I must inform you of the sudden passing of Admiral Erica Archer. Effective immediately, command authority for this sector and oversight of the ongoing temporal displacement crisis has been transferred to Admiral Robert Walter. I want to make one thing absolutely clear, however: the change in command does not alter our mission objectives.”

Vance allowed the announcement to settle before directing his attention toward the main viewscreen, where the faint distress beacon of the USS Pathfinder continued to pulse through the violent chronometric interference. “Admiral Archer’s final directive concerning the Pathfinder was unequivocal. Those people are not historical artifacts, regardless of how long they have been displaced from our present.

They are Starfleet personnel, and they are still alive. Our priority remains bringing them home.” His expression hardened with the quiet determination of an officer who understood that grief could not be permitted to interfere with the work still required of them. “Captain T’Nara remains the Mission Commander for this operation. Listening Post 47 will continue providing the ArkAngel with every available sensor feed, temporal telemetry, computational resource, and logistical capability at our disposal. Whatever has happened to our command structure, the Pathfinder remains our objective, and we will continue the recovery operation.”

With the station’s command structure and mission parameters firmly established, Vance’s attention shifted toward Captain T’Nara and the ArkAngel’s senior staff. The operational center returned its focus to the temporal distortion, its shifting patterns reflecting across the consoles as the fragile window surrounding the Pathfinder continued to fluctuate.

The recent breakthrough involving tractor-beam frequency modulation now represented their most promising avenue for establishing a controlled connection with the displaced vessel, but the anomaly remained unstable and the consequences of a failed extraction were unknown. Vance stepped aside, deliberately leaving the next phase of the operation in T’Nara’s hands as the station continued feeding data into the ArkAngel’s systems. The mission had lost one of its strongest advocates, and a new admiral now stood at the top of its chain of command, but for the officers standing beneath the glow of the viewscreen, one fact remained unchanged: somewhere inside that temporal distortion, the crew of the USS Pathfinder was waiting for Starfleet to bring them home.

She then looked at Vance. “Let’s continue this operation and get those people home. Alright folks let’s go ahead send that probe out immediately and also Ms. Kelley inform the away team to get ready. We need to get them going as soon as possible. Activate the tractor beam and hope to get this ship and crew back safely.” She ordered everyone to get back to work.

Charlotte remained near the central operations area as the final orders were being issued, her attention moving between Commander Vance, Captain T’Nara, and the shifting telemetry displayed across the station’s tactical systems. The situation had changed considerably in the last several minutes. With Admiral Archer’s final directive now carried forward under Admiral Walter’s oversight, there was no ambiguity concerning the mission. The Pathfinder and her crew were still alive, and Starfleet was going to make every reasonable effort to bring them home.

She stepped toward the tactical plotting table, addressing Vance directly.

“Commander, the Ark Angel is moving into extraction posture. Captain T’Nara has authorized us to proceed with the tractor-beam recovery plan. We’re going to need Listening Post 47 fully synchronized with our operation.”

Charlotte indicated the temporal distortion on the display.

“I need your station to continue feeding us every piece of temporal telemetry you’re collecting on PX-941. In particular, I want the stabilization cycle monitored continuously. If that twelve-second window changes by even a fraction, I want the Ark Angel informed immediately.”

Her expression hardened slightly as she continued.

“Your station’s sensors may have a better baseline on the anomaly than anything we can obtain from the Ark Angel while we’re maneuvering around it. I want your people watching for any change in the Pathfinder’s temporal envelope, structural integrity, or position relative to the anomaly. If you see something that doesn’t make sense, don’t wait for us to ask. Put it on our channel immediately.”

Charlotte glanced toward the main display, where the distant image of the Pathfinder continued to flicker within the distortion.

“We’re also deploying a probe to improve our telemetry. Once we establish the tractor connection, I want Listening Post 47 maintaining the best possible sensor lock you can achieve. If the beam begins interacting with the anomaly in a way you haven’t seen before, your warning may be the difference between bringing that ship home and losing the window.”

She paused, then looked back toward Vance.

“And Commander, I want your station ready for the recovery phase as well. If we succeed in separating the Pathfinder from the temporal field, that crew is going to need a safe place to stabilize before we determine their next destination. Prepare whatever medical, communications, and logistical support you can provide.”

Charlotte gave the Pathfinder one last look before returning her attention to Vance.

“We’ve got one opportunity to do this correctly. The Ark Angel will handle the extraction. Listening Post 47 will be our eyes on the anomaly. Let’s make sure neither of us misses anything.”

She straightened, her voice becoming crisp and professional.

“Keep the channel open, Commander. We’re going to need you.”

Ollie stepped back and took up a position quietly monitoring the situation. He was happy that Ensign Gibbs had seemed to find an option that wouldn’t require blasting the away team through a temporal anomaly and hoping for the best, he also was glad that the captain was still sending the probe. Any extra information was good and it would, hopefully, help the Ark Angel crew get a closer look to make sure they were on the right track.

The operations center of Listening Post 47 remained locked onto the unstable temporal phenomenon when the tactical display registered a new contact dropping from warp. Ensign Cortez worked quickly across his console, narrowing the sensor sweep as the station’s systems resolved the vessel’s configuration and transmitted identification. The Federation transponder came first, followed by the unmistakable Starfleet registry: USS Thunder Valley, NCC-99801. The massive Nebraska-class heavy dreadnought emerged from warp at a carefully calculated distance from PX-941, its imposing silhouette filling the station’s tactical display before settling into a controlled holding position well outside the anomaly’s most volatile region. There was nothing hurried about the maneuver; Thunder Valley’s approach demonstrated the precision of a vessel operating under deliberate command, its powerful engines and weapons systems held in reserve while its sensor arrays began quietly examining the temporal disturbance.

A moment later, the communications console sounded, announcing an incoming priority transmission.

“Commander Vance, we’re receiving a secure hail from the Thunder Valley. Commodore Kyle James is requesting you personally.”

The main viewer activated, and the image of Commodore Kyle James appeared against the bridge of the dreadnought, his Starfleet uniform immaculate and his expression composed with the quiet severity expected of an officer carrying direct authority from Starfleet Operations.

“Commander Vance,” James began, dispensing with unnecessary ceremony as the secure channel established itself. “Commodore Kyle James, commanding officer of the USS Thunder Valley and Chief of Operations, Starfleet Operations Command. I’m contacting you under direct authority from Fleet Admiral Robert T. Walter.”

His expression remained professional as he continued, the significance of what he was about to say evident in the deliberate precision of his words.

“Admiral Walter has reviewed your service record, including the circumstances surrounding your previous reduction in rank. Following that review, Starfleet Operations has determined that the disciplinary action affecting your flag rank no longer represents an appropriate assessment of your service, experience, or present capability. Effective immediately, that reduction in rank is rescinded. You are hereby restored to the permanent rank of Vice Admiral, Starfleet.”

James allowed the statement to settle before continuing.

“This is not a ceremonial restoration, Commander. Admiral Walter is assigning you to Starfleet Headquarters in London as Director of Strategic Operations, Starfleet Operations Division. You will report through the established command structure to Admiral Carmen Flores, Deputy Commander of Starfleet Operations, and you will assume responsibility for strategic operational planning, fleet-level coordination, and the integration of intelligence, tactical, diplomatic, and logistical resources during major Starfleet operations.”

His expression remained firm.

“Admiral Walter’s expectation is straightforward. He is not putting you behind a desk to preserve an old title. He is putting you back into the chain of command because he believes Starfleet requires your experience at the strategic level.”

James’s gaze briefly shifted toward the tactical display behind Vance, where PX-941 continued to distort the surrounding sensor picture.

“However, your new assignment does not begin until the present crisis is resolved. Admiral Walter has specifically directed that you remain in command of Listening Post 47 for the duration of the Pathfinder operation. Captain T’Nara and the crew of the USS Ark Angel are conducting the recovery effort, and this station remains their primary support facility. They are to have every available resource, sensor capability, technical facility, and communications channel at your disposal. Whatever assistance they require from Listening Post 47, you are authorized to provide.”

For the first time, James’s expression hardened.

“There is one other matter Admiral Walter wanted made absolutely clear. Your restoration is an opportunity, but it is also a responsibility. Starfleet has entrusted you with a flag command again because it believes your judgment is valuable. What happened earlier in your career is part of the record, but it does not have to define the remainder of it. You have been given the opportunity to demonstrate that the decision to restore you was the correct one.”

He paused briefly before delivering the final order.

“Finish the mission, Vice Admiral. Bring the USS Pathfinder and her crew home.”

James gave a precise nod toward the station commander.

“When the Pathfinder operation is concluded, turn command of Listening Post 47 over to Commander Franklin Von Erich and report to Starfleet Headquarters, London. Admiral Walter will receive you personally. Your office is already being prepared, your assignment has been entered into the Starfleet personnel system, and the chain of command has been notified.”

The Commodore’s voice became deliberately formal as he delivered the final confirmation.

“From this moment forward, Starfleet Operations recognizes you as Vice Admiral Marcus Vance, Director of Strategic Operations.”

James held the channel for another moment before adding, in a quieter but no less authoritative tone:

“Welcome back to the flag ranks, Admiral. Now finish what you started.”

The transmission terminated, leaving the operations center once again illuminated by the shifting blue-white light of PX-941 as the station continued its vigil over the trapped starship. Outside the station, the enormous USS Thunder Valley remained on station, her long-range sensor arrays continuing to probe the temporal distortion—and whatever else might be moving within it.

“This is Captain Amelia Hayes, commanding officer of the Federation starship USS Pathfinder. We are receiving your transmission, but your vessel is not currently identified in our navigational database or sensor records. Your configuration and registry are unfamiliar to us, and given our present circumstances, I am requesting that you identify yourself immediately.”

“Please transmit your vessel identification, registry number, commanding officer, and Starfleet authorization code. Until we can positively establish your identity and affiliation, I am requesting that your vessel maintain its present position and refrain from initiating any transporter activity or other potentially hostile action. We have experienced significant navigational and communications anomalies, and I would prefer to establish clear identification before making any assumptions about your intentions.”

“Captain of the USS Pathfinder this is Captain T’Nara of the USS Ark Angel. We are here to get you, your crew and your ship back to our reality and back home. You have missed quite a bit of time while you’ve been missing Captain. I’ll explain it when it is time.” Captain T’Nara replied to the hail from Captain Ameila Hayes

Captain T’Nara
Commanding Officer
USS Ark Angel

Captain Amelia Hayes remained silent for several seconds after T’Nara’s transmission ended. Her expression was controlled, but there was unmistakable confusion behind her eyes. The words back to our reality and you have missed quite a bit of time carried implications she was not yet prepared to understand.

Finally, she leaned toward the communications console.

“Captain T’Nara, this is Captain Amelia Hayes, commanding officer of the USS Pathfinder.”

She paused, glancing briefly toward the temporal distortion surrounding her vessel before returning her attention to the transmission.

“Your message raises considerably more questions than it answers. You’re telling me that you’ve come to retrieve my crew and return us home, but you also said that we’ve missed quite a bit of time.”

Her voice remained professional, though the strain beneath it was becoming increasingly apparent.

“The last thing I remember with any certainty is entering the temporal anomaly. My chief engineer was attempting to stabilize the ship, and then…” Hayes hesitated. “Then we received your transmission.”

She looked down at the chronometer on her console.

“According to our ship’s systems, only a few hours have passed.”

Hayes looked directly toward the viewscreen.

“So, Captain T’Nara, I need you to answer one question before we proceed.”

A brief pause.

“How long have we actually been missing?”

Her expression hardened slightly.

“And what exactly do you mean when you say you’re going to take us back to your reality?”

Hayes folded her hands behind her back, forcing herself to remain composed.

“My crew deserves answers, Captain. Whatever has happened to us, they need to know what we’re facing before I order them to stand down and place this ship in your hands.”

She paused again, then added more quietly.

“But if you truly have a way to get my people home…”

Her eyes remained fixed on the viewscreen.

“Then I’m listening.”

WHITE TIGER

“Captain, I’ve got orders from command to bring you and your crew along your ship out of some kind of anamoly that you’ve been stuck in, other than that, questions can be answered once we get you and your crew out of it and we can discuss more from there.” She replied.

Captain T’Nara
Commanding Officer
USS Ark Angel

Captain Hayes would probably accept the answer for the moment, but she would not simply surrender command of the Pathfinder without establishing at least some basic operational safeguards. She has been trapped in an anomaly, contacted by an unfamiliar Starfleet vessel, and told that more than a century may have passed. Her response should therefore be professional, cautious, and authoritative rather than argumentative.

Captain Amelia Hayes listened carefully as Captain T’Nara’s response came through the communications channel. For several moments, she said nothing, allowing the implications of the brief explanation to settle. It was clear that T’Nara either did not yet have the opportunity—or did not consider it safe—to provide the answers Hayes was demanding.

Hayes finally gave a slow nod.

“Understood, Captain T’Nara. I would prefer considerably more information before placing my ship and crew in the hands of another vessel, but I recognize the situation we are in. If your assessment is correct and this anomaly represents an immediate threat to the Pathfinder and everyone aboard her, then getting my people clear takes precedence over satisfying our curiosity.”

She glanced toward the Pathfinder’s main viewscreen, watching the distorted field surrounding the ship fluctuate across the stars beyond it.

“However, I want to make one thing absolutely clear. Until we are safely outside this anomaly, I remain responsible for the USS Pathfinder and her crew. I expect your vessel to coordinate with my bridge before initiating any maneuver that could place this ship or my personnel at additional risk.”

Hayes paused briefly.

“If your tractor system has established a connection with us, then proceed according to your extraction plan. My crew will cooperate with your operation, but I want your people to understand that we will not make unnecessary movements while we’re inside this field. We’ve already experienced enough instability to know that this anomaly does not behave according to conventional physics.”

Her expression softened slightly.

“And Captain… whatever has happened to us, I appreciate the fact that you came looking for us.”

She looked down at the chronometer once more before returning her attention to the communications display.

“You’ve told me that my crew and ship have been missing for some considerable amount of time. I won’t press you for answers while we’re still fighting to get out. Once we’re clear, however, I expect a full briefing. I need to know where we are, when we are, what happened to the Federation, and why our ship has been absent from your records for so long.”

Hayes straightened, her command presence returning fully.

“Until then, Captain T’Nara, you have my cooperation. Get us out of this anomaly, and we’ll deal with the rest afterward.”

She turned toward her communications officer.

“Keep the channel open with the Ark Angel. I want continuous updates on the extraction.”

Hayes returned her attention to the viewscreen, her voice firm as she delivered her final instruction.

“Pathfinder will stand by for extraction.”

Charlotte remained at her station, watching the Pathfinder’s telemetry stabilize across the tactical display as the tractor beam maintained its connection with the displaced vessel. The situation was still precarious, but for the first time since the operation began, the recovery effort was moving according to plan.

She turned toward Captain T’Nara.

“Captain, Pathfinder has acknowledged the extraction protocol and is holding position. Their engineering department is monitoring their temporal shielding and tractor interface, so at least we’re now working with a cooperative vessel rather than trying to pull an unwilling ship out of the anomaly.”

Charlotte glanced back toward the sensor display.

“I recommend we keep the tractor field at the lowest effective power necessary to maintain the connection. If the anomaly is already reacting to the field, increasing power unnecessarily could destabilize the temporal envelope around Pathfinder.”

Her attention shifted briefly toward the medical readouts.

“I’m also having Sickbay prepare for the possibility of temporal exposure. We don’t know what four hours inside Pathfinder’s frame of reference while one hundred and four years have passed externally has done to their crew biologically. Even if their shipboard environment appears normal, I don’t want anyone assuming that normal sensor readings mean normal physiology.”

Charlotte looked back to T’Nara.

“Once Pathfinder clears the anomaly, I want the crew kept aboard their ship initially unless there’s an immediate medical emergency. We’ll establish a medical scan protocol first, then determine whether anyone requires transfer to the Ark Angel.”

She paused before continuing.

“And Captain, I’d recommend we maintain the communications channel with Captain Hayes throughout the extraction. She’s understandably concerned about her crew and her ship. Giving her continuous status updates will help keep the Pathfinder bridge calm and prevent anyone from making an unnecessary move during the most dangerous portion of this operation.”

Charlotte’s expression became more focused as another fluctuation appeared on the temporal telemetry.

“We’ve got one chance to get them through this without making the situation worse. Engineering controls the tractor, Science monitors the anomaly, Operations manages the extraction profile, and Medical handles whatever happens to the crew afterward.”

She gave T’Nara a firm nod.

“Whatever PX-941 throws at us next, we’ll deal with it. Right now, Captain, our job is simple.”

Her eyes returned to the Pathfinder.

“Get them out alive.”
