“If I remember my history correctly .. I think the Bajorans achieved Warp capabilities well before we did? Though I do see your point.” He seemed to accept it with reluctance. “Though if anything I’d wish they’d just fix the wording of the treaty to just say all technologies instead ..” He exhaled through his nose after a moment and continued, “I don’t think they’ll change the treaty to allow the sharing of technologies unless we run into a galactic problem again like Dominion War ..” His eyes lit up for a moment. “I heard the USS Defiant was allowed to use a Romulan Cloaking device during that time.” He groaned with longing at thought of it. “I would have loved to be there to see it.. I’m sure they were in strict control of it, but still!”
“I wish I may, I wish I might; but sometimes I cannot see the stars in sight.” She smiled, reciting an old version of a very common rhyme that she had always been told, as a child, regarding the same issue. “Perhaps, one day, you will be given the chance to experience something so extraordinary. Of course, one can easily doubt you will ever get to be one of the officers so see a Cloaking Device he used on a Federation Starship, but other events will come and you will be older, then.” She paused, thinking. “On that topic, of technology, that is; do you have a piece of Federation technology that you find to be most beneficial to us?” She had heard him discuss foreign technology, so she pondered what he found within native.
He sighed aloud and looked up in the chair. “Ah .. that would be the best if I could see that one day.” He thought for a moment in silence at the counselor’s question. “Mmm … I wouldn’t say it’s so much a technology. I’d have to say it’s the Federations ingenuity and curiosity that’s the most beneficial. It pushes us forward to create interesting things. Without that sort of purpose humanity would never have reached the stars.”
“Yes. Just as man would have been given wings, of meant to fly; man who have been made to survive space, if meant to explore. But, as a species, we discovered, as much as we wanted to, we had to.” She nodded, “There is no telling where our planet might have been, now. If it hadn’t not been for the choice to venture to the moon, and later to break the warp barrier.” Roux rested back, seeming even tinier behind the table. “Why Starfleet, Emmitt?”
“That’s probably the easiest question you’ve asked yet Lieutenant.” He beamed. “Easiest organization to tinker with stuff! Granted I probably could have been a civilian contractor that helped build and design Starfleet vessels, but you never get to see them in action and see everything working. I dunno, I just feel at home with Starfleet to be honest.” He scratch the side of his head trying to figure out a better answer, but he just shrugged after a moment as he couldn’t come up with anything.
His answer was perfectly fine, in her books. Offering a grin, she picked up her stylus and signed off on the file she had pulled up for the young engineer. “Then, I suppose that wraps all of this up; you are hereby cleared for duty.” Roux offered a hand to him, “Thank you, for stopping by, Emmitt.”
He learn forward and reached out reached out to return her handshake before standing up. “Oh of course! Thanks as well!” He looked back and pointed towards the maintenance shaft that he had entered from. “Uh .. sorry again for the odd entrance.. but please let me know if you ever require any maintenance here, I’ll make sure it’s fixed right quick!” He gave a sheepish smile hoping she wasn’t too upset about the entrance.
“It is quite alright, Lieutenant.” Roux waved a dismissive hand, shaking her head as if to say that it was something of the past. “I will be sure to.. the same goes for you. If you ever need someone to talk to, just come knock on my door. I don’t mind walkins.” She grinned, waving to him.
He laughed a bit before heading towards the door. “Will do! See you around!” Before reaching the door he turned and politely waved goodbye before heading back to his ‘home’ in Engineering.
