Lieutenant Commander Dr. Charlotte Kelley stepped through the doors of the USS ArkAngel Ready Room, the soft hiss of the seals closing behind her marking the start of the day’s senior staff briefing. The room was already set in its usual state of disciplined order—long briefing table centered beneath the tactical display, command console ready, status panels quietly cycling through shipwide systems. Everything in its place. Everything waiting.
She crossed the space with measured confidence, PADD in her left hand, a steaming cup of coffee in her right. No rush. There was never a need for it here—only timing.
Charlotte placed the PADD down first at the head of the table. The screen immediately populated with overnight reports: engineering diagnostics, medical readiness updates, security logs, science summaries. Routine at a glance. Routine was never something she trusted for long aboard a starship.
She took a slow sip of coffee, eyes lifting from the display to the empty chairs around the table. A habit more than necessity—reading a room that hadn’t filled yet. Who arrived early? Who arrived exactly on time. Who always came in just a fraction late but tried not to show it.
Her gaze shifted briefly to the chronometer.
Early, as expected.
Senior staff would filter in soon—security setting the pace, followed by operations and engineering, then science and medical. The familiar rhythm of command on a Federation starship. Predictable on paper. Less so in practice.
Charlotte adjusted the PADD so it sat perfectly aligned with the table edge. Precise. Intentional. A small act of control in a job that rarely offered any.
Another sip of coffee.
Then she set the cup down beside the PADD and folded her hands lightly in front of her, waiting in silence as the USS ArkAngel carried on around them—steady, unaware, and always one report away from change.
Lt Izak Waryn stepped into the Ready Room without looking up from his PADD. He noted the presence of somebody else in the room and was mildly startled when he looked up and saw the new Executive Officer was already sitting down. His eyes darted to the chronometer and relaxed slightly when he realized he wasn’t late.
“Good afternoon, Commander. I kind of figured I’d be the first one here.” Because I usually am, he thought. As the youngest… or at least the newest… Department Head onboard, he went out of his way to fulfill all the duties and responsibilities expected of the position.
Izak had a faint, rueful grin as he approached her and extended his hand. “It’s nice to officially meet you, Ma’am. I’m Lieutenant Izak Waryn, Chief Engineer.” His smile faltered a bit as he saw the PADD in front of her. “Though I’m sure your files already told you that.”

The Ready Room doors parted with a quiet hiss, admitting Lieutenant Alex Cross into the room.
The counselor stepped inside carrying a single PADD tucked beneath his arm. Unlike many of the reports filling the table, his was comparatively light—crew wellness summaries, department morale trends, and the occasional recommendation for command. Counseling rarely generated stacks of paperwork, but what it did produce often proved just as important.
Cross paused briefly, offering a polite smile as he saw the Executive Officer and Chief Engineer already present.
“Commander. Lieutenant.”
He inclined his head respectfully before making his way to his customary seat at the briefing table. As always, his uniform was immaculate, his posture relaxed yet professional, and his calm demeanor seemed almost at odds with the pace of a Galaxy-class starship.
Setting his PADD neatly before him, he took a moment to glance around the Ready Room. It was his first senior staff meeting with Commander Kelley presiding as Executive Officer, and he found himself quietly observing the room’s dynamic. Every command team developed its own rhythm. Learning that rhythm was as important as any briefing that would appear on the viewscreen.
He folded his hands loosely atop the table.
“It’s good to finally meet you in person, Commander,” Cross said warmly. “Welcome aboard the Ark Angel. I hope your first few days have been treating you well.”
He then looked toward Waryn with a friendly smile.
“Lieutenant, I see engineering continues its tradition of arriving early.”
There was just enough humor in the comment to acknowledge the chief engineer’s well-earned reputation without embarrassing him.
Izak’s cheeks flushed briefly but he forced a grin. “I have to pull myself away from Main Engineering early, othewise I might let myself get distracted by the latest system casualtiy and miss the meeting altogether.”
With that, Cross settled comfortably into his chair, content to let the conversation continue as the remainder of the senior staff began to arrive.
Lieutenant Alex Cross
Chief Counselor
USS Ark Angel“Commander Cross, Lieutenant, I believe we’re still waiting on a couple of people before we get started I believe. But thank you for coming so quickly as you both could.”
Commander Dr. Charlotte M. Kelley
XO USS ARK ANGELIzak let his hand drop awkwardly whe,,n the XO didn’t ,shake ,it. Great first impression, Izak, the Lieutenant thought. You really nailed this one.
“No problem Commander. I’ll just… take my seat and wait for the meeting to start.” The Chief Engineer took his place near the far end of the table and tried in vain to read the reports on his PADD to clear his head.

The doors slid open again as the Chief of Operations strode in an empty mug in his hand, long dried tea stains in the bottom of it. He stopped and took a brief glance around the room before settling himself down into a random seat. “Greetings and salutations,” he rested the mug in front of him on the table, “Anyone signed up for the assassin’s competition tomorrow night?”
Unlike Lieutenant Cross, his appearance was nowhere near as tidy, his hair had puffed out like it had been near static recently and his sleeves were pushed slightly up, although still far enough down no-one could see his scars, and the edges were damp with some faint black marks on it.
Lt. Hegush, Chief of Operations.
“Good to see you again. Lieutenant. What is the Assassins competition exactly? I saw it advertised but haven’t had a chance to look into it further?” Cross asked curiously.
Counselor Alex Cross
“It’s the one where everyone gets an electronic bracelet with the name of someone else who has signed up, a special vest and an electronic device and you have to touch the device to the vest of the person you have the name of, then you get the name of their target and keep going until no-one is left. The last man standing or the person who eliminated the most players are the winners. Most times the winners are Security Officers or Engineers,” Hegush looked at Waryn.
“I think it’s hosted on the holodeck in a random environment. I’ve heard it gets very chaotic otherwise,”
Spenn entered the room and stared silently at the people inside. He knew the new XO would be here and to little surprise, it was a human. Humans made up a sizeable portion of Starfleet. Vulcans had long since given up attempts at explaining this phenomena with logic. As such, he said plainly, “Greetings.”
Lieutenant Spenn
Chief Medical Officer” Lieutenant Spenn greetings to you as wellllll please sit. I believe you can go next as Chief Medical Officer for a department update. And so you are aware Captain Becket is retiring whennn we reach Starbase 243 and we will be throwing me a farewell party.”
Commander Dr. Charlotte M. Kelley
XO USS ARK ANGEL“Who is organizing the farewell party?” Hegush asked.
Lt. Hegush, Chief of Operations.
” I am unless we have any volunteers Lieutenant ” Charlotte replied.
Commander Dr. Charlotte M. Kelley
XO USS ARK ANGEL“As Chief Counselors, I am willing to volunteer to assist with organizing it.” Cross offered.
Lieutenant Alex Cross
Chief Counselor
U.S.S. Ark Angel” Your offer Councilor is accepted Lieutenant.” Charlotte replied.
Commander Dr. Charlotte M. Kelley
XO USS ARK ANGELIzak like the idea of a party for Captain Becket… he felt the man deserved a good send off. He looked over at Counselor Cross. “Let me know if you want any help with the preparations, I’ll chip in wherever you need me.”
He shifted his attention over to their new Executive Officer. “Commander, the Engineering department is at 97% manning. We have 12 people transferring out when we reach the starbase and 15 people coming in. That will bump us up to just over 98% strength. I’ve had particular difficulty retaining Junior Officers… if you or the Captain have any contacts that can help recruit potential additions, it would be greatly appreciated.”
The Chief Engineer glanced down at his PADD briefly, even though he knew most of the information it displayed already. “We completed a Warp Core overhaul before this latest mission, so we’re in good shape there. All other systems are nominal, except the port-side holodecks on Deck 16, which are experiencing a force field issue that renders the treadmill effect non-functional. I’ll give my team another couple of days to figure it out on their own, and then I’ll jump in.”
He wasn’t happy that the crewmen were still troubleshooting the issue, but he also knew this was valuable experience for them. “The only other major evolution coming up for my department is the semi-annual review of auxiliary craft. I don’t anticipate any significant issues there either.”
With his report complete Izak simply added. “I’m standing by if you have any questions, Ma’am.”
OOC: The JO comment was real… we’ve had a few new players pop in over the last 5 months but nobody has stayed around for more than a couple of posts. Maybe Lynx’s secondary character will fill part of that void.

Soral entered the room, he had been in a conversation with the Vulcan science academy, more specifically his mother, who was the one in charge over there
“I apologise for my tardiness”
He said nodding to the officers present while he found his seat.
Lt Soral T’Varan
Chief Diplomatic Officer
USS Ark Angel” Of Course Lieutenant apology noted and accepted we’re currently discussing the party for Captain Becket’s retirement upon reaching Starbase 243. Before returning to the status of each department continuing with Lieutenant Hegush or Lieutenant Spenn.” Charlotte replied
Commander Dr. Charlotte M. Kelley
XO USS ARK ANGEL
“Parties are not something we Vulcans and in particular myself are good at, may I ask what we have decided?”
It was unusal for Soral to take interest in such matters, he however had come a long way in Human matters since joining the Ark Angel and the Captain had a great deal to do with it, so he wanted his service to be honoured as all great Captain’s should be
