Next stop on the tour was Deck 13 and the Main Science labs. Gibbs stood like a statue looking at the size of the two storied laboratories: Monitors, work stations, ongoing experiments, blue uniforms almost everywhere. It was a site to behold for sure. And he was going to work here…Him. All of his hard work had brought him to a lab of this size. He was anxious to tell his Mom all about this.

He scanned the open area looking for a Caitian. He figured she would be easy to find.

Ens. Gibbs.

Looking like a lost lamb, it was easy to spot the new guy. Ensign Barnicke checked the PaDD he was working on setting a place to resume the report he was reading. He set the Padd and walked over to the new officer. Extending his hand he stated, “Hello. I’m Ensign Barnicke. Our Chief is currently on assignment and away from the ship. Is there anything I can do to assist you?”

Gibbs took the hand of his now fellow officer, “Walter Gibbs. I just transferred from Starbase 47. I was hoping I could check in with the Chief, get myself started on an assignment.”

“Walter, I’m Terrance. Call me Terry.” Barnicke replied. “Our acting Chief is on third shift, so unless you want to come back at 2200 hours… Let me take your transfer orders and I’ll put them on the acting chief’s desk. I’m sure they will contact you later and arrange a time to meet. Don’t be surprised if it is 0500 or earlier.”

Gibbs had been mostly on second shift at Starbase 47 so having to adjust his sleep schedule wasn’t a concern. “Thank you, Terry. Any chance we might get to work together in the future? In fact, what are you working on now? Maybe I can help?

With a smile Barnicke motioned for Gibbs to follow and brought him over to his workstation. He tapped the Padd a few times and brought the info onto a larger screen so they could both access the readout. “I’m working on a subroutine to allow our biology labs to access the climate systems in Arboreum three. Each of our Arboreum’s have a separate climate control system. Our biology labs currently cannot not recreate all known growing conditions. I’m trying to find a work around.”
