Lieutenant Commander Dr. Charlotte Kelley stepped through the doors of the USS ArkAngel Ready Room, the soft hiss of the seals closing behind her marking the start of the day’s senior staff briefing.

The room was already set in its usual state of disciplined order—long briefing table centered beneath the tactical display, command console ready, status panels quietly cycling through shipwide systems. Everything in its place. Everything waiting.

She crossed the space with measured confidence, PADD in her left hand, a steaming cup of coffee in her right. No rush. There was never a need for it here—only timing.

Charlotte placed the PADD down first at the head of the table. The screen immediately populated with overnight reports: engineering diagnostics, medical readiness updates, security logs, science summaries. Routine at a glance. Routine was never something she trusted for long aboard a starship.

She took a slow sip of coffee, eyes lifting from the display to the empty chairs around the table. A habit more than necessity—reading a room that hadn’t filled yet. Who arrived early? Who arrived exactly on time. Who always came in just a fraction late but tried not to show it.

Her gaze shifted briefly to the chronometer.

Early, as expected.

Senior staff would filter in soon—security setting the pace, followed by operations and engineering, then science and medical. The familiar rhythm of command on a Federation starship. Predictable on paper. Less so in practice.

Charlotte adjusted the PADD so it sat perfectly aligned with the table edge. Precise. Intentional. A small act of control in a job that rarely offered any.

Another sip of coffee.

Then she set the cup down beside the PADD and folded her hands lightly in front of her, waiting in silence as the USS ArkAngel carried on around them—steady, unaware, and always one report away from change.

Lt Izak Waryn stepped into the Ready Room without looking up from his PADD. He noted the presence of somebody else in the room and was mildly startled when he looked up and saw the new Executive Officer was already sitting down. His eyes darted to the chronometer and relaxed slightly when he realized he wasn’t late.

“Good afternoon, Commander. I kind of figured I’d be the first one here.” Because I usually am, he thought. As the youngest… or at least the newest… Department Head onboard, he went out of his way to fulfill all the duties and responsibilities expected of the position.

Izak had a faint, rueful grin as he approached her and extended his hand. “It’s nice to officially meet you, Ma’am. I’m Lieutenant Izak Waryn, Chief Engineer.” His smile faltered a bit as he saw the PADD in front of her. “Though I’m sure your files already told you that.”

The Ready Room doors parted with a quiet hiss, admitting Lieutenant Alex Cross into the room.

The counselor stepped inside carrying a single PADD tucked beneath his arm. Unlike many of the reports filling the table, his was comparatively light—crew wellness summaries, department morale trends, and the occasional recommendation for command. Counseling rarely generated stacks of paperwork, but what it did produce often proved just as important.

Cross paused briefly, offering a polite smile as he saw the Executive Officer and Chief Engineer already present.

“Commander. Lieutenant.”

He inclined his head respectfully before making his way to his customary seat at the briefing table. As always, his uniform was immaculate, his posture relaxed yet professional, and his calm demeanor seemed almost at odds with the pace of a Galaxy-class starship.

Setting his PADD neatly before him, he took a moment to glance around the Ready Room. It was his first senior staff meeting with Commander Kelley presiding as Executive Officer, and he found himself quietly observing the room’s dynamic. Every command team developed its own rhythm. Learning that rhythm was as important as any briefing that would appear on the viewscreen.

He folded his hands loosely atop the table.

“It’s good to finally meet you in person, Commander,” Cross said warmly. “Welcome aboard the Ark Angel. I hope your first few days have been treating you well.”

He then looked toward Waryn with a friendly smile.

“Lieutenant, I see engineering continues its tradition of arriving early.”

There was just enough humor in the comment to acknowledge the chief engineer’s well-earned reputation without embarrassing him.

Izak’s cheeks flushed briefly but he forced a grin. “I have to pull myself away from Main Engineering early, othewise I might let myself get distracted by the latest system casualtiy and miss the meeting altogether.”

With that, Cross settled comfortably into his chair, content to let the conversation continue as the remainder of the senior staff began to arrive.

“Commander Cross, Lieutenant, I believe we’re still waiting on a couple of people before we get started I believe. But thank you for coming so quickly as you both could.”

Izak let his hand drop awkwardly when the XO didn’t shake it. Great first impression, Izak, the Lieutenant thought. You really nailed this one.

“No problem Commander. I’ll just… take my seat and wait for the meeting to start.” The Chief Engineer took his place near the far end of the table and tried in vain to read the reports on his PADD to clear his head.
