Haley straightened his uniform for the fifth time. It wasn’t that he was nervous, as such.
He just liked to look his best.
Haley had done well at the Academy - not as well as he had hoped, and a small part of him wondered if his good grade didn’t have a little to do with his… “involvement” with one of his senior tutors.
Oh well.
Running a hand through his dark hair (making sure to leave a few strands hanging on his forehead, of course), the Betazoid made his way to the Counsellor’s office, pressing the door-chime and cricking his neck, standing straight and putting on his best winning smile.
“Here we go,” he mumbles a little, under his breath.

Ensign H Frost

The soft chime at the office door drew Alex’s attention away from the padd he’d been reviewing.

He glanced once around the room—an unconscious habit now—ensuring everything felt as it should. Warm lighting, low and amber-toned. The sectional angled toward the viewport. The subtle moss-and-gold rug grounding the recessed seating area a step below the main floor level, creating a natural separation from the more formal desk space. The carved pelican catching just enough light to cast a gentle shadow against the curved wall.

Good. Inviting. Not intimidating.

“Enter,” he called, voice even and warm.

The doors parted with a quiet hiss, revealing a young officer standing just a fraction too straight. Dark hair artfully unsettled. Smile polished.

Betazoid.

Alex felt the faintest brush at the edges of his awareness—not intrusion, just presence. He kept his own thoughts steady, grounded, practiced. Years of working alongside empaths had taught him how to keep his emotional posture relaxed but structured.

“Ensign Frost,” he greeted, rising from behind his desk rather than waiting seated. “Welcome. I’m Lieutenant Cross.”

He didn’t extend a hand immediately—some Betazoids preferred less physical formality—but he offered a nod and an easy smile that reached his eyes.

“Please,” he gestured toward the recessed sitting area. “Have a seat down there. It’s a little more comfortable than the regulation guest chairs.”

The recessed space was intentional—two shallow steps down from the main office floor, creating a sense of containment without confinement. The sectional, slate-gray and soft, curved in a gentle arc beneath the viewport, stars drifting silently beyond the transparent aluminum. Two earth-toned armchairs flanked the couch, angled conversationally rather than confrontationally.

A low curved table sat at the center, dark wood composite, holding a glass carafe of water, two short tumblers, and a small covered dish.

Alex moved toward the built-in replicator alcove tucked discreetly behind a partial wall panel near the seating area. “Can I get you something? Coffee? Tea? Water? I make a halfway decent chicory blend—perk of growing up in New Orleans.”

There was an ease in the way he occupied the room. He didn’t loom. Didn’t crowd. Even standing, his posture suggested openness rather than authority.

Soft wall sconces cast amber light along the honey-toned panels, while a subtle backlight behind the couch mimicked late afternoon sunlight. No harsh overhead glare. No clinical brightness. The faint scent of something sweet—beignets, lightly dusted—hung in the air, warm and comforting.

“This space is yours while you’re in it,” Alex added gently, stepping down into the recessed area but choosing one of the armchairs instead of the couch, leaving Frost the more comfortable central seat if he wished it. “There’s no agenda beyond getting to know you a bit. First assignments can come with… adjustments.”

His expression softened just slightly—not prying, not probing. Just present.

“And before you ask,” he added with a small hint of humor, “No one’s here because they’re in trouble.”

He folded one leg casually over the other, hands resting loosely on his knee, gaze attentive but unpressured.

“Tell me how your first few days aboard Ark Angel have been, Ensign.”
