Izak blinked a few times and felt himself calm down a bit as the Counselor’s words put him at ease. That was one of the worst moments in his life and he desperately didn’t want it to be what defined him.

LT Cross’s follow up question caused the young Ensign’s stomach to twist again. “Um, no. Not really. I mean… the ability to generate bio-electricity is genetic, and my family did teach me how to control it. That’s more of a brute force thing though… like a defensive evolution at some point back in our history.”

“The ability to… interface with machines… I think that might have been more a flight of fancy than a real ability.” Izak swallowed. “When I was younger my hands would tingle like I was feeling the electricity in whatever I was working on. It almost seemed like equipment did what I wanted it to even before I entered the command. It seemed to happen more with computers… especially ones with bio-neural circuitry.”

Izak managed to look embarrassed as he spoke again. “I thought it was a mutation… or another evolution of Brekkian physiology. I listed it on my Academy application and tried to study it those first few years. I took a few Exobiology classes and worked to recreate the conditions and measure what was going on in my body and the equipment when it happened. Unfortunately, whenever I actively force the ability it backfired or fried out the circuitry. Culminating in the incident.”

“Its not something I’m interested in pursuing anymore.” Ensign Waryn finished quickly.

“Understandable, not something I would recommend trying on your own again. But I also think this part of who you are and worth some research. We could research your people to see if there have been others with this ability. Reading and research does not hurt.”

Izak was quiet as he processed LT Cross’s words for a few seconds. I really don’t want to go down this road again.

“I… suppose that’s true, a little bit of research wouldn’t hurt.” He resigned himself to that at least… but only because he was unable to come up with a reasonable argument against it. “I’ll look into it when I have the free time. I’m not really expecting to find anything, though.

“I can see that it still causes you anxiety, Ensign, I was offering to do it with you so you do not have to be alone. An ear to bounce things off of is a good thing.”

Izak frowned slightly before trying to mask it. Help was the last thing he wanted… it meant he couldn’t just go through the motions of doing the research. It meant he was going to have to face this whether he liked it or not.

He tried to look for some sort of bright side. Izak was pretty sure they wouldn’t find anything… doing this research would only prove that it wasn’t a real ability and that he was right to stop pursuing that path. Yeah… that seems like a flimsy justification.

Ensign Waryn simply stated, “I appreciate that, Sir.”
