A clean and somewhat refreshed Ensign Waryn arrived at 17 Forward.

Over the last few moments, he had started to wonder if this was some hazing incident and that he’d arrive only to find no other Engineers were there. With the way my day has been going, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Luckily, as he walked through the door, he saw Ensign Boras sitting at a large table with a few other Engineers. The table could easily fit over a dozen people and seemed to be the center of the room, with a half dozen smaller tables filling the space out.

17 Forward itself didn’t seem too crowded, but he got the impression that business was starting to pick up. Alpha shift did just turn over, afterall. Izak walked over to say hello. “Good to see you Boras! I’m going to get a drink from the replicator, and I’ll be right over.”

OOC: I had a moment, so I figured I’d start a new thread. I tried to leave it open so the Chief could set the scene. I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a raucous event or more like the “mandatory fun” of a work function.

OOC: you beat me to it

O’Nell was there telling the new engineers how when he first came onto the ship, he asked to use warp cores from the shuttles and made a bridge device just to get the Archangel moving through warp.

Then O’Nell picked up a glass and said

“Welcome to the new engineers to our team I will like say that, even though you’re new, you have already taken your first steps into the world of possibilities and as we working together as a team, we will be able to boldly go where no one has gone before. And we will seek out those new worlds and civilizations.

He raised the glass

Izak came back with a Bajoran Ale and had time for a little bit of small talk as he got to know his new crewmates.

He then listened and laughed at LT O’Nell’s tales with the other Ensigns. Linking together the warp cores of shuttles was a rather ingenious solution to their problem. ENS Waryn couldn’t help but wonder what sorts of solutions he’d come up with, now that he was on a Heavy Explorer that would, hopefully soon, push the boundaries of known space.

He raised his glass at the Chief Engineer’s toast and took another drink. Izak still felt like the Freaking New Guy, but he also felt like he was starting to find his place. It made him curious how LT O’Nell settled in on his first ship.

“Sir, so was Ark Angel your first ship? Did you come here as an Ensign and make it all the way to Chief Engineer?”

O’Nell looked at him and said “no lad you never forget your first ship. Mine was destroyed during the Dominion war. She was a great vessel. A refitted recon class that became a heavy escort. The USS: Star Blazer” he said with a sad tone “she went down with my old boss, keeping the containment fields up to give us enough time to make it to the escape pods”

Katie nodded. Lt. Riley was right. You never forget your first assignment. Well. Sort of. She actually struggled to remember her midshipman cruise. It had been something of a hohum affair filled with menial tasks to give the handful of cadets who had never been off planet before some experience. She, on the other hand, was the third Star Fleet officer in her family after her older sister and brother Jasmine and Nicholas. With the stories those two had told, space and starships felt like old hat by the time she got to the academy.

“For me, the most memorable time was actually on the space station waiting for the USS Phobos to show up. The Chief Engineer of the station seemed to take an instant dislike of me. One of the first assignments he gave me was… well. Let it suffice that the saying “Its a dirty job but someone has to it” was definitely true of this task.”

“Oof… that had to be rough.” Izak said to Boras as he shook his head. He could imagine LTJG Hobbe’s misery… it was never pleasant to run afoul of a vindictive supervisor. Or professor.

She glanced at O’Nell.

“I am sorry, sir. I believe I have managed to miss checking in with you,” Katie said. “LtJg Katherine Hobbes, reporting in.”

When it looked like Hobbes was going to do her check in interview with O’Nell right there in 17 Forward, the two Ensigns silently agreed to give them there space.

“I wonder if that was a tactical decision.” Izak mused as they walked away.

“What?” Boras replied.

“Saving her check in for when the Chief Engineer was off duty and in a good mood.”

The Arkarian Ensign huffed in response. “Possible. Not to mention he’s already had a drink or two.”

Izak smiled. “Yeah! Her comment about getting on the wrong side of a station Chief Engineer made me wonder. We’ll have to keep an eye on her… especially if she gets assigned to lead one of our shifts.”

“That’s a problem for another day, Izak. For now… do you know how to play Strategema?”

The Brekkian managed not to break out in a grin. “I’ve dabbled a bit. Do you want to play?” Izak followed his new friend as he led the way to one of the gaming areas.
