“Izak… we have to call the Chief.” Boras said, voicing what ENS Waryn already knew to be the truth. He’d realized it about 10 minutes ago when the amused expressions of the other engineering officers turned to faintly worried. Or pitying.

Together, Boras and Izak had scoured every option they could think of and reasonably attempt on their own. Everything seem to point to the warp coils themselves, but all the diagnostics they could run without impacting the system turned up nothing. They either needed to take the coils offline for a full diagnostic… or attempt some potentially risky off the books procedure. Either way, they needed help to do it.

It became clear that that was the point all along, but it only made Izak more frustrated. Not at the nature of the test… just that he’d totally missed the point in his stubborn attempt to do everything himself.

“You’re right Boras. Sorry to drag you down with me.” ENS Waryn said.

“Nonsense…” Boras said, trying to cheer him up. “We still have 15 minutes until the end of shift. The day’s not over just yet.”

Izak gave a faint smile, but didn’t feel it. He looked around Main Engineering and saw the Chief talking to the oncoming Engineering Duty Officer for Beta Shift. Ensigns Waryn and Boras approached and waited for an opening. “Chief… Ensign Boras and I need your help to solve the interference with the warp field.

Riley smiled his big brother smile and said “have you tried to clear the exhaust manifold. The build up will caused the interference in the warp field” he said the one thing that was the easiest thing to check “I did this test to see how well you work and how you work together. I did this test to teach you this you’re not supposed to know everything all the time and it is ok to ask for help. We are team down here and we’re all in this together.” He said

Izak opened his mouth to protest but stopped himself. He was going to say that the manifolds were never an issue because the Academy had the first year Cadets scrub them almost religiously.

But that was the Academy.

The test engines the Academy used never went anywhere either, so they weren’t exposed to the same environment or stress as an operational ship. One of Izak’s first year professors even made it a point to mention that during a lecture.

ENS Waryn blushed at his own mistake, and silently hoped his skin was still tan enough to hide most of it. “Right, I....” Izak sighed and nodded. “Understood Chief. And thank you.”

Izak turned to go back to his station to complete the procedure, but a Crewman from Alpha Shift was already on the console and knocking it out. The Crewman gave ENS Waryn a nod that somehow said, Dont worry… we’ve got your back. Izak returned the nod and offered a rueful smile.

Riley then spoke up to the engineers that we’re still passing down their jobs to the next shift and said “ let’s meet in the mess hall we got to celebrate a new member joining our team” the rest of the team whooped and hollered.

Izak couldn’t help but smile. “Sounds good to me, I feel like I just put myself through the ringer.” To that point… I need to swing by my quarters for a quick shower and a fresh uniform.

“I need to go clean up first, Chief, but im looking forward to talking to you and some of the other Engineering Officers. Should I meet you in the mess hall?”

Riley smiled and said “ya meet us there in 10 minutes” after saying that he turned to another engineer to complete the pass down.

Izak excused himself went to his new quarters, just a few decks down on 45… the lowest deck on the ship. His bags were by his bed… some crewman had dropped them off for him while he went to check in with LT O’Nell.

As he cleaned up he couldn’t help but rehash recent events in his mind. It’s been a hell of a first day so far… but I can’t complaint. It wasn’t exactly the first impression Ensign Waryn wanted to make, but he got a good feel from the department and the Chief Engineer.

Freshly washed and in a new uniform, the young Engineering Officer found the nearest turbolift and headed for 17/18 Forward.

OOC: I tagged Katie in case we wanted to turn this into an engineering department thing. In which case a new thread may be appropriate… IDK.
